This was my first trip to Portugal and it was fantastic.  The country was fantastic and this guesthouse was unlike anything that I have every experienced.  There was kitchen privileges, free use of washer and dryer, bed had a memory foam topper, and the room was extremely clean.  There was a large communal living room where I met several very nice people from all over the world. I will definitely make this guesthouse a stop on my next trip to Europe.  

I have traveled all over the world and this was one of my best lodging stays.

Wow! We arrived at your place/ gem in the rain after 2 weeks on motorcycle through Spain & Portugal all wet on our way to Lisbon for our flight back on a Sunday afternoon after high seison and you welcomed us with open arms. It felt like  home. We had the whole place to ourselves and it felt like home! Thank you so much for restoring our energy! What a lovely little place, beautiful, neat , clean and excellent value for money! 

Wet Bikers!!

We are extremely pleased with having booked this B&B. Looking unobtrusive on the outside but very spacious inside. We were welcomed by the owner and shown around in a very sympathetic manner. The heating had already been switched on for us as it was slightly chilly outside. Questions about were to go and what to see were answered very clearly and without rush in excellent English and proved very helpful. A very clean place, very comfortable bed, excellent bathroom and all that is necessary or convenient was in place. Easy walk to the centre of town. Could not have been better at all.
After having left and moved a fair distance we realised that we had left something behind but before we could notify the owner he already contacted us and offered to send it to the UK for just the cost of sending and when I payed more via PayPal we were send some gifts of food as an extra. Altogether a very pleasing experience offered by the kindest of person.

Best Choice Lodging is located in Oliveira do Hospital, a small town some 30 minutes from the Serra da Estrela mountainous region. It's neither a hotel nor a hostel, but a guest house in a residential area. You have to pay when you check in, but I got the feeling they're flexible about that. On arrival they showed us around and gave a printout with a town map highlighting local restaurants offering vegetarian options, as well as a variety of useful things, like the bus stop, post office, supermarket, etc.

There are several prices, depending on the type of bedroom (of course) and whether you want a private bathroom or a shared one. Breakfast is not included, but you have access to the kitchen where you can make your own meals. They offer tea sachets, barley "coffee" and some super foods for sampling (goji, chia, organic cocoa powder, etc.). Use of the kitchen means access to cutlery, dishes, mugs, etc., as well as a microwave, cooker, fridge, washing machine and you can even make your own soy yoghurt! They also have a water filter available. There's also a living room with fireplace and TV. Wi-fi is free and it worked fine.

The rooms are OK, but could use a little colour. They're functional but not very big and for some reason they decided to have no curtains. The bed was comfortable but I'm afraid it might be too low for elderly knees. The TV in the bedroom worked perfectly well, with plenty of national and international channels. Our bathroom had two wash basins (which can be very handy for couples!) and was good enough. However, there were no drinking glasses, the bidet had no towel and getting in and out of the bathtub (which is a bit higher than normal) can be complicated if you happen to be: a) short b) a child c) handicapped d) having problems with your knees. Bathroom amenities were a surprise: for the price we paid I was expecting no more than a small bar of soap, but instead we got an organic vegan cruelty-free seaweed hand wash, as well as samples of equally organic vegan cruelty-free shampoo, bath&shower gel, body lotion and shaving cream. We also got a 50gr chocolate bar each with rum and raisins which, of course, was organic and gluten free.

All in all, it was a good experience and great value for money!

If you don't feel like cooking there are plenty of restaurants and cafés in town. Going to the town centre is a mere 5 minute walk from the guest house. On our first day there we went to the Café Central (in the town garden) for breakfast. It's a modern, clean and comfy place which also serves some snacks and quick meals. Two lattes and two warm pastries with ham and cheese cost us something under 3.50€ and those lattes were amazing - tasty and beautiful!
