We are a family of 7 brothers and sisters with in-laws who gathered for a family reunion in Portugal, mid October 2015. The autumn coloured the hills, the mild temperature invited us for living outside : from breakfast, after taking a swim to late evening,  organising a taste of wine on the terraces. At the vast domain of the Quinta, walking the camino to heaven, we enjoyed the closeness to nature and the fragrances, being guided around by the owner who also took us into the small town rich in history.  As a family we enjoyed being together, yet having enough space to relax and be on our own if so wanted. We will definitely go back to Dick, also because of the rich offer of the Alentejo regio. Indeed, a little piece of heaven.

Family reunion

My family stayed at Quinta do Colmeal for five nights, and it was the highlight of our European trip. The Quinta sits alone in a gentle range of hills, with an undisturbed view of the valley beyond the pool. The pool is reached by walking down a path lined with orange trees -- we made fresh-squeezed orange juice each morning. The pool is deep and refreshing, formed out of the cistern that used to store water for the Quinta and its work. There are several carved stones around the pool and the garden; at least one of them apparently dates from Roman times. We stayed in the largest of the three houses, and enjoyed sunset cocktails on the second-floor terrace and candle-lit dinners in the downstairs dining room. Rounding out the stay was a ping-pong table, shelves full of books and local maps, a stereo system and CD collection that filled the house with the sound of Portuguese "fado" ballads, and artwork from Asia and elsewhere that the owner has collected over the years. The owner and his assistant were gracious and helpful hosts, teaching us about the history of the Quinta and the town and treating us to a cocktail hour of wine and cheese. I hope to return to Quinta do Colmeal and the wonderful Vila Vicosa area in the future. Lots of exploring to do there, but also lots of relaxing and recharging the spirit.

Peaceful retreat in the countryside hills

We've been to Quinta do Colmeal twice. First time was in August 2010 and we enjoyed it so much that we returned this summer. The Quinta (farm) is composed of three houses, fully equipped (shower, toillet, kitchen, dinnig and living room) with three different sizes, T1, T2 and T3. The environment is fabulous, all nature and quietness of Alentejo. All three houses share a great swimming pool and a enormous courtyard and great places to rest, play cards, or cook a barbecue. The owner (Dick)  and the staff (Sr. João) are hipper friendly and prestative. I will return one, two, three times for as long as I can...
