The room was spacious and the bed was comfy. our room had only a window situated pretty hight - there was a special stick to open it.
The food was good, actually the menu ordered by our party-guests.
The staff was nice.

Accommodation and private party

I was there with my wife and kid, after the recommendation of a German friend. I tried the beefsteak, my wife tried chef's specialty and we were both very happy with our dishes. It is clean, food is good. It could be better if the personnel would be less stiff and if they could speak a foreign language. 

Good food

We stayed here for 2 nights in the middle of our tour of Romania and it was one of the most beautiful places we stayed. The pension is right in the middle of the city, the room was very clean and spacious. We would like to thank the entire team for making our stay such an amazing and unforgettable. Everything was taken care of for us extremely well. All the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We would like to especially thank Mrs Manager for her care and detail, she made sure everything was perfect. We write this review specially for them, because usually people don't write when they like something, but when they are not satisfied, they write a lot.

Overwhelming

Montana Popa consists of a hotel, restaurant with a terrace and a small food store.
The hotel, located on the main street of Blaj, looks quite OK from outside, better than the other hotel across the street, Tarnavele.
Montana Popa has about 20 rooms.

But the big issue is the SMELL!
There is a sewerage strong smell, present in every room. 
They try to cover it with strong perfumed oily substances, overspilled in the bathroom.
The result is terrible.  Sewerage AND strong perfume. Plus sometimes extremely slippery bathroom floors, from overspilled liquid, not properly washed off.

Last night I had to leave the room due to the heaviest perfume smell ever. It was truly unbreathable in the room. We couldn't stay inside even with both room door and the balcony door opened.

The manager was nowhere to be found, despite the fact she was informed about the problem. She received 5 phone calls from the reception, but did not pick up the phone. 

I was held on the balcony, awaiting for a solution, until midnight.
In the end, as there was no other viable solution (they offered me another room with no windows and NO BATHROOM, the only one still unoccupied), I had to find a solution myself. I had to wake up a colleague and shared her room...
Same bad perfume smell, but at least, less strong.

I will try to never return here.

Beware of Montana Popa

was not looking forward to this stay (booked to attend a wedding in Blaj) after some of the reviews we read. There is little hotel choice in Blaj so we opted for this one.
It's wonderful! Staff cant do enough to help you, one young female manager (Christina? not sure) went out of her way to assist us with everything and even went out to buy the specific fruit we liked for breakfast!
The room was fine (superior room) but very hot with only a skylight (room 5) despite aircon so we moved to one of the balcony rooms (room 3) which was superb. Obviously this is a cheap hotel so don't expect fluffy robes and slippers but it's extremely clean, the rooms are spacious, air con works well, bathroom maybe a little tired but no complaints. Beds I have to say for me were awful! very very hard and painful..four nights was enough for me but very clean.
we ate food in the restaurant which was excellent and very cheap. Breakfast was brilliant. 
Do watch out for parties/weddings here though as they go on until around 4am so you may not get much sleep but we were out anyway so it was no issue and the manager said it was unusual to have them all weekend. 
The gym looked nice, we didn't use anything else.
Location is perfect. 
The staff were so kind, I would most certainly recommend it and will have no hesitation in returning there.

surprisingly good

Excellent location, very clean everywhere, friendly staff, nice room with air conditioning, free parking place with surveillance camera. But: suffocating atmosphere because of the small sloped window that we have to keep closed to limit the noise of the wedding they had in the restaurant. The entry into the parking in back yard is from Avram Iancu street.
