I travel from Bulgaria, cross the border by ferry to Romania, it was late and we need a place to stay, but we only see fields and small villages with no places to stay. In Caracal we get lucky and found Edimburg Hotel and the friendly Andrea ( I suppose). It was a very good experience.

I had a second stay at this hotel and it was very pleasant.  In particular, Mariana was very accommodating and fun to talk with. She went above and beyond what could be expected for someone running a hotel. For example, one night the power went out to the hotel, through no fault of their own. We assumed there would be no breakfast available but Mariano was using a flashlight to make our breakfast with a gas stove!

I think once you accept that this is a privately run hotel that doesn't necessarily use typical Western standards, and some of the quirkiness that comes along with it, you will find this is the best hotel to stay at.

Great place

The best hotel to get a unique experience

The appeal of this hotel is obviously the very well done exterior.  The interior is also very nice with full sized suit of armor and similar Scottish decorations.  The location is great because it's right next to a park, and a 30 second walk to a good restaurant.
The breakfast was excellent.  Not only do they give you a traditional Romanian breakfast that is very well rounded, but they will give you a water bottle, a packaged croissant, and a lot of coffee.  The employees were young and very nice, we had a good time joking with them and asking them about the town.
Downsides:  As others have noted, there is no elevator so just be prepared for that.
The biggest problem I had was the sewer gas smell from the bathroom.  I don't understand Romanian plumbing, but I suspect they don't put a trap at every drain like we do in the US.  The center floor drain had been covered with... packing tape... to no avail.  Even with the bathroom door closed and the window open all the time, my room still smelled like sewer gas.  Other reviews have noted this so I fault them for not fixing this immediately.  However, to their credit, 2 other hotels of the 6 I stayed in in Romania also had sewer gas smells from the bathroom, but none were as bad as this.  Also, we were told that most of the rooms were being renovated as soon as we checked out, so hopefully this will get fixed.

Since this was the first hotel I stayed in in Romania, I didn't know what was customary for housekeeping.  I have never experienced anything so invasive in my life.  I walked in and everything I had out had been put away in some form.  They zipped up my suitcase and put it in a corner.  They even picked up my dirty laundry and put it in a bag I did not want dirty laundry in.  The biggest problem I had was bubble wrap I had left in a pile to protect delicate equipment I brought.  They took all of it and threw it away.  I'm baffled by this, because I didn't have the bubble wrap in trashcan, and I had planned to reuse it for the flight home.  Okay, well that's not the end of the world, I'll just go out and buy new bubble wrap, right?  Wrong.  Despite Caracal being a decent sized city, the nearest place I *might* find bubble wrap was in Craiova, 40 minutes away.  I spent over 2 hours of my personal time walking around and asking for bubble wrap to no avail.  Luckily, I found a nice English-speaking lady in the local market that helped me find some foam padding I used instead.
If you want to have a sparkling clean and organized room, get them to clean it for you.  If you don't like strangers touching everything you left in the room, asking them daily not to clean your room.

Nicest hotel in Caracal

I stayed in this hotel several times and its service deteriorated trough time. It is obvious that owners have a "thing" for the medieval flare, and they are apparently pouring all earnings into decorating ground floor to look like dineyeusque  medieval castle interior. I am not against that generally, and I personally like medieval ambiance but, in situation where rooms are showing signs of leaking water from ceilings, windows in rooms are broken, you have to wait 10 minutes of running water so you can get only lukewarm trickle for showering, Internet service is worse and worse, breakfast is still only till 09;00, and there is no real heating in the room when you need it ( It was cold and A/C is not strong enough to heat it up) - well then they are pouring money into wrong direction - their obsession instead guest comfort. In addition, this area they are decorating is only a breakfast place, not even a bar, you can't have a drinks there and all you can do is sit there and look at expensive decorations, and after 5 minutes - it gets boring... 
Add to this that I was in 'executive apartment' and that price doubled of what it was just year ago ( you can get 4 star hotel in Bucharest for $70.00) and I regretfully have to say I was looking for alternative accommodation in this city. And there are some, better, cheaper and much more comfortable. 
Note to management: I am sorry but guests' comfort is primary.

Book example of "sucess trap"

This was my second stay at this hotel. First one ( in 2015) not bad at all. Unfortunately things degraded ...
So:
-first room: broken glass at the door between bedroom and "living". The heating radiator fell on my feet.
I asked for another room , it was not an apartment, i had to ask if is the same rate ( the receptionist asked the owner and we had a 5 $ discount :) ... unfortunately -again- the bed and pillow covers were wet . I mean WET. The front desk lady offered us other room, but also asked the owner for rate .It was 7$ more expensive than the first one... but I need a place to sleep so... 
Everything looks not OK ... AC not working, one set of towels only, coach was dirty etc,etc...I had some visitors ( one was my mother) that were not allowed to visit my in  the room ... I had to convince the front desk, this time a very impertinent young guy to let them come. 
Next morning ... the hotel run without hot water , exactly when my wife had foam in her hair... I was excited, but my wife not to happy to wash with cold water.
I really do hope that the owner will hire someone to help him save the business.
