My first impression wasn't great, as the hotel has no name, so I wasn't sure where the taxi driver had left me, and without a phone it would have been difficult, but once I was settled in I was perfectly happy. All the staff are very friendly and helpful, and most importantly, the bed is very, very comfortable. I stayed in a twin room, so the bed was a single, but it was good enough for 3 nights. The hotel is extremely clean and the shared bathroom and showers are excellent. There is hot and cold water in the corridor and a comunal fridge, but it's maybe a pity that there's no kitchen, because it's more of a lexury hostel than a hotel. There is a cafe next door run by the same people, very Russian in style, but the food I had there was extremely tasty and cheap, and if you're too tired to go elsewhere it's an excellent option. The main sights are about 10 mins walk uphill or 2 stops on a tram. The river is not far away and there is a simple shop opposite for water, breakfast etc. Internet is perfect, there is also a tv, and the room is spacious enough to have a good work table as well. The rooms are very warm, but it is too noisy outside from the road to open the windows. No noise from other rooms though. There is no bin in the room, my biggest complaint. Otherwise a good stay for the money.

Good for price

I had accommodation booked in a hostel, but there was a problem with electricity and this was suggested as an alternative. I couldn't stay the first night as it took much longer for me to get from the airport (DME) to the right train station. The train I got left Moscow at 23:45 and had berths to sleep.
So I got to Smolensk at 06:30.
The taxi from the station cost 200 rubles and took about 5 minutes.
The 'hotel' is above a garage! Very easy to miss it as a hotel.
The views aren't great, there is a building site at the back. (see photo)
No facilities for eating or drinking, but the room is very clean, there are a toilet and 2 bathrooms to share. One of the bathrooms has a washing machine.
The shower worked fine, hot water, no variation in temperature or pressure. Just what I needed after taking more than 24 hours from leaving home to get here.
The choice of TV channels is ok, if you understand Russian... The TV is connected to a satellite receiver. (see photo)
The WiFi works well - password given on arrival.
