I am stayed at Hotel Oceanic and honestly,,, it's clean and pleasant for the rate. Clean rooms and floors. Not a brothel. Maybe those years. Good small breakfast in morning. Sometimes a vehicle carrier vessel's engine can be a bit a annoying in the night.
Other than that,,, i was happy.

We chose this hotel due to reviews here and the location in Dakar. Having traveled in various African countries it sounded like a good deal. We arrived after busy working days in Senegal (for my wife) and Burkina Faso (for me) in the Oceanic. So we needed some calm and quiet and thought - since the hotel is away from the main streets - this would be alright. 

It was a Thursday night during the Football World Cup 2022 - we would have expected some noise, but since all the games had ended at 21:00 - the night should be calm and quiet. We had some food outside and arrived for the night at about 23:00 with a tremendous noise. - "oh, it's just the neighbours, they will stop at midnight" - that's what we were told at the reception - this happens every Thursday - apparently. Now if you check my pictures - you can see there is absolutely no noise canceling in the rooms - neither the door, nor the window keeps even a whisper outside - but especially no bass from a 200.000W Karaoke machine. So - incredible noise until about 00:15 - then slowly but steadily the noise went ... 

We were told this only happens on Thursday - so we left Dakar on Saturday for a tour and decided to give the hotel another go for two nights on our return to Dakar before we headed back home. Big mistake. We arrived back on a Tuesday about a week later. After a long trip all through Senegal - again - for some quiet winding down. And then it started - Tuesday night - Metallica in your room - I am serious - even if I raised my computer volume or the TV volume to the max - no way it could be louder than the noise that entered from the neighbours. Incredible. 22.00 - the receptionist went over to the restaurant and asked them to turn the music down - result: the music volume in the room went down from Metallica, let's say to Johnny Hallyday. So I went down again at 23.00 and asked the reception to go over there again, to call the owner, the police or to find us another room. Now the nightmare starts. The receptionist was repectless and told me to find a new hotel - if I am not happy with my room and the noise. He will not call the police - and the owner already called the neighbours - everyone helpless - as we found out. I stayed at the reception until 00.15 - the music was still going strong - we were offered nothing - they were helpless and the receptionist rude (he never came back to say he was sorry, neither did the owner encourage that - since we met him again the following night - he barely looked at me). 

The next morning the owner of the hotel came to explain to us, that there is a political issue and that he can not do anything about the noise. The police will not do anything (that is what he was telling us) that's why he will never call them. Well - if you never try, you never know, as Coldplay said. He told us that they had an agreement, that there will only be noise on Thursdays - we saw how that agreement worked out... And what an agreement that is - I guess that should be written on the hotel website: "noise every thursday night until midnight from our neighbours".
Apart from being nice and smiling - nothing happened - we paid for the full room. 

Since the whole trip was our honeymoon - and Senegal was a blast in general - this part was very sad - and the hope for change regarding the noise for the guests of the hotel is low. Apparently the neighbours are way better connected in Dakar - and I hope the guests will show the owner and the staff that this is not acceptable.

We'll be back in Senegal in about 6 months or maybe a year - and I'll make sure to update this review (definitely not staying in the hotel) but passing by at night and checking whether they have changed something - either by adapting the room doors and windows or by quieting the neighbours (which seems impossible due to their political connections).

Additionally I'd like to add, that the internet connection on the second floor of the hotel is practically non existent and whenever you catch a glimpse of the wifi - it'll work for in between 30 seconds and 1 minute - so we had to buy our own sim-card - since really - apart from the restaurant and the reception area - the wifi in the room was useless.

One more note - we really like to sleep under mosquito nets in Africa - so the first room we had at the Oceanic had a great mosquito net - the second room we had - the one for our Metallica/Johnny Hallyday nights - covered one side of the double bed - so we had to get out our traveling net and put up that one to cover both of us.

By the way, the owner asked us to write a review on Trip Advisor, which I would have done anyway. This is it.

I am not happy I had to write this way, and my reviews in general are happy - if you get what is offered, but this could be a gem of Dakar but ...

Hummm - very split, but rather sad opinion due to treatment and noise

We had issues on our visit to West Africa and went back to Dakar and this hotel three times. That's how comfortable we were with this hotel so we came back due to the price, good room size, nice staff, and that old school ambiance.

Great value good location

The Oceanic is located next to the beautiful colonial Kermel market and is walking distance to the ferry terminal for boats to Isle des Gorees.  This is not a new pristine hotel, yet while the rooms are worn, they are very clean.  There is always hot water and a feeling of safety, because the staff keeps a close eye on things.  I had an evening flight and had checked out, but after a day in Dakar I really wanted a shower.  When I returned to pick up my suitcase, the porter allowed me to use a room to wash.  They didn't charge me, though I gave the porter a tip.  I give this hotel 4 stars for being excellent in its price range.

Location and kindness of staff

Perfect location behind Kermel market and close to both Place de Independence and the ferrys to Ile de Gorée you are pretty much in the center of everything. Spacious rooms with a cozy veranda plus a friendly and English speaking staff makes the stay very pleasant with a high value. The restaurant serves Senegalese specialites to a good price.

Budget accommodation in central Dakar. Great way to be central and avoid traffic jams. Close to major institution s like the embassies, the CFA main bank and docks. So if you have business in central Dakar the location can make your life a lot easier. thhe hotel is close to the railway station, the link to the airport will open soon so that makes it  even more convenient. The showers are hot, the WiFi works pretty well, rooms clean but basic, mosquito nets provided. The staff are great, they always greet you. Nice little restaurant that is always going to feed you. There is a great market just around the corner so they never run out of food. Have a look at the market btw. It's amazing if you are a westerner. The croissants are the best I have ever tasted!

Good choice,simple, small quiet and clean hotel, what you need for your visit in Dakar. Owner very kind, recommended if you like a comfortable and clean hotel. Good bed and nice bar at the ground for breakfast and dinner.


Good choice

We stayed three days with friends during our trip to Dakar. The rooms are clean, the restaurant is very comfortable and always fresh. It offers a variety of Senegalese meals. The hotel is well located: only a few steps away from the heart of Dakar, markets, harbour, place of independence. A special thank for the staff and the owners who were friendly and of good advice. 

Nice and friendly place

As the organizer of a trip for 12 participants on some professional business but with a small(ish) budget, I appreciated the great affordability of the Hotel Oceanic. It has a great location in Plateau, with most important government institutions and international organizations just a walk or short drive away. While you won't get a sea view here and the place isn't exactly brand new, rooms were clean and we left our valuables in them without hesitation. The staff is really friendly and helpful, including the owner, who is often on site. Internet was spotty, but according to the owner, the place will get fiber within the next few weeks.

There is a decent restaurant, though you can find similar quality for less money, if you are willing to go outside. If you have special needs (like vegetarian food or group meals), talk to the owner and he'll be happy to help. There is a conference room, but we didn't use it. We didn't encounter any mosquitoes, but the bed nets didn't look great and are certainly not impregnated, so if in doubt, bring your own. Overall an excellent stay that surpassed my expectations.

Great for groups on small budgets

The hotel offers cosy shelter in the hearth of the Plateau, which is not the most beautiful, neither safest neighborhood in Dakar. AC and very nice staff make it a good joice for a Split over in dakar.
