We stayed in late Feb. Unfortunately we experienced an armed invasion of our room during which two men broke through our doors, attacked one of us, and stole all of our valuables and passports. I would like to say this was just an unavoidable incident, but I don't think that's true. There were a variety of factors on the part of this guesthouse that made this incident more likely. Firstly, the property was mostly vacant and we could only contact the staff via offsite owners/relatives of owners. When we arrived at 6:30 pm, the whole property looked quite dark and empty. We buzzed at the gate and honked the horn but nobody came. We realised that they had a policy of advance notice if you were checking in after 5 pm, but this still seemed odd. We do finally contacted someone offsite who called someone to let us in. He had a friendly dog which put us at ease. However, this person did not seem to expect guests that evening and he told us we were the only guests. We did not get a full tour of the property or contact information for the staff.

Secondly, the property was not that secure. I almost hate to put this online but I think prospective  guests need to know and management needs to publicly improve these things. The gate was easy to climb and I didn't see any cameras. There was no landline phone available. Lighting was poor. The doors were easy to break through. There was supposedly a security guard but we weren't introduced and there was no security response to the loud scuffle and shouting that occurred during the break-in. There was no response from anyone, in fact. We were seemingly all alone on that property except for thieves who somehow knew to find us there. We thought we saw the security guard once when we arrived back at the hotel after dinner,but that was it and we weren't even sure if was him.

Finally, and perhaps most critically, we learned from the police that an identical incident had happened in the same guesthouse one week prior to our stay. We were not warned of this. Security did not appear to be enhanced despite a recent break-in with guests inside. 
The staff were kind the next morning 
 but I think this situation could have been prevented or made better by improved management of this property. I hope improvements are made.

We were not safe here

Halstead Farm is a hidden gem. A step back in time to an era of colonial Victorian elegance. A peaceful retreat in a wonderful shady garden with hidden arches and pathways and lots of birds. Our room in an annex had a lovely deep verandah overlooking a sweeping lawn. A perfect place to write a book or read one or paint the lovely setting! There is also a fenced-in swimming pool to cool down in.
We spent 2 nights and visited Addo Park 10 km away .  Our grandchildren loved the garden and treehouse esp. after being cooped up all day in the car at the game reserve. Restaurant not too far away by car where u can also get take away.

Nostalgic Getaway

Halstead is a stylish farm home away from home.
Mirium is helpful. And makes a delicious breakfast. 
We were lucky to see over a hundred elephants mud bathing and enjoying cooling off at the waterhole.

Wonderful!

What could have been a superb facility, is horribly neglected and in dire need of repair and maintenance and upgrades. The bathroom fittings are all falling of. The furntiure is all broken. They don't even have a proper double bed, just single beds pushed together. The daily breakfast is lacklustre with little choice and no variation.  Only the friendly staff make up for the owners shortcommings, but they themselves are not given the means and support they need. The facility charges 4 star prices, but rates 2 stars across the board in implementation.

Thank you for a wonderful warm stay! The rooms were so inviting and felt so homely. Your staff were exceptionally friendly and the service was wonderful! We would highly recommend this stop if you are visiting Addo.

We stayed at one of the cottages in this farm and the staff lady who welcomed us with her brother were just so attentive and nice. She also made the most amazing breakfast and we had the best marmalade and bread rolls ever. All this set in a nice courtyard in the manor house. The cottage itself was very comfortable, and nicely decorated. The grounds were also expansive and very peaceful and relaxing. Overall, this is an authentic farm stay that is truly impressive.

We had a lovely stay at Halstead Farm. Our accommodation was as comfy as it was attractive -- very. The staff looked after us so well. The breakfast was delicious, generous and such a valuable add in. 

A beautiful escape

We've been welcomed by Miriam and Eric, the two most friendly people we met on our trip. It's rural, simple, but with charm and heart as you want to look out for. Luxury lies in simplicity, truly authentic. We enjoyed our visit, great restaurant close by.

Addo visit

A group of four couples (three motorbikes) stayed over at Halstead Farm when visiting the Kirkwood Wildsfees. A beautiful guesthouse with very spacious and well furnished rooms. Excellent breakfast in a cozy dining room with a fire burning in the antique fire place and also lots of books to page through. Friendly and helpful personnel. Highly recommended. The only criticism was the electric motor of the main gate which was not working...it created a security risk...

Kirkwood Wildsfees 2019

We only spend one night at Halstead Farm but it was very nice. Miriam, Eric and Rasta (if I remember the names all correctly) were wonderful and nice. We arrived after 5pm due a lot of traffic and we were worried that we would have trouble to come in but it was not a problem at all.
Miriam was very welcoming. To room as nice and one had the feeling the time stopped at Halstead Farm and this is actually the charm and beauty of this place. The breakfast had a small selection but it was very nice too. We can definitely recommend staying at Halstead Farm.
