Lovely place.  Room we stayed in could do with an upgrade - broken floor tiles, curtains very skimpy.  Otherwise the room was very comfortable.  A truly peaceful break and lovely hiking though it is very challenging - it is proper hiking and one needs to have good shoes and a hiking pole.

Peaceful Get away

Went to cycle and hike. Were told house next to "farm" pool - IT WAS EMPTY. Kitchen stocked with lot of unneeded items but NO TOASTER - THE OVEN was not working (apparently) never did. House did not lock?  4 ladies alone! Otherwise very quiet and pleasant NO CYCLING ROUTE.. HIking badly marked.  Wouter and absolute GEM but never told us about actual swimming pool and we did ask.

Bateleur Week-end

Upon arrival, was not informed of the incredibly bumpy 20km dirt road to get to the reserve. Managed to make it in a Ford Figo but most of the roads are evidently for higher clearance vehicles, and it would be good to mention this to people wanting to visit the reserve. (thank heavens it didn't rain) 
I stayed with my partner in Stone Cottage (#8) for two nights.
The view from Stone Cottage was my favorite experience from visiting this nature reserve. This cottage featured a double bed and one small single bed, lovely fireplace and indoor table for those colder nights. A pleasant outdoor braai nearby the epic gum tree that buzzed with life.
The bath in Stone Cottage desperately needs to be revamped as most of the enamel has come off and it's not nice to use. Luckily there was a shower too, using gas, which was a bit tricky to get right. 
On the first morning we woke up to a beautiful sunrise, but no water at all running through the taps which was very disappointing. We only received water by mid-day because apparently they had to pump it into the tank. 
Attempted to hike from stone cottage to the rock pools but the trails are not maintained and with the tall grass we ended up with so many ticks on us that we gave up on the rock pools. I've never experienced so many ticks in my life. 
We then wanted to try refresh ourselves in the swimming pool but that as well has been poorly maintained and was not a fresh sparkly experience at all. The toilet by the swimming pool had mold growing on it. 
Most of the cottages are in disrepair and need maintenance done. 
The bird hide is mentioned on the map but it is severely overgrown and not accessible. 
The highlights of visiting this place was again, the view, as well as all of the animal tracks. There is evidence of abundant wildlife but unfortunately the hiking trails and cottages need some attention.

Never experienced so many ticks in my life

If you like quiet & wide open spaces, bumpy roads, birds, bokkies and creepy crawlies, then  you will enjoy Bateleur Nature Reserve, as we did. Wonderful views and some good hiking trails. The cottage could do with some attention to upkeep though. But we would be happy to return there again.

Mispel Cottage

Farmhouse building are neglected, doors can not lock, ceilings need maintenance, gas stove in kitchen doesnt work properly. 
Great locaction though. Beautiful nature and views.
Not value for money. 
Reluctant to reccomend. 
    


Farmhouse stay

The accommodation was adequate. Wished we had spend a bit more and stayed in the stone cottage. 
be careful of the roads to the property as you need a 4x4. It was lovely and quiet and it was nice to walk and be close to nature.

Good Holiday

What a great place to stay! We loved it from the minute we arrived, the cottage is simple but adequate. The location is superb, amazing sunrise and sunset from the front porch, with game strolling past in the mornings and late afternoon. The cottage was very clean, the kitchen fitted with basics, the bed amazing white crisp linen. The bathroom needs a bit TLC, but everything works well though. The hiking trails were well marked and we enjoyed them thoroughly. We were warmly welcomed by the staff and everything was explained to us clearly, including hiking maps. We will definitely be back!

Fantastic stay with nothing and no one around but pure nature!

A well kept secret - Gum Tree Cottage is full of old world charm in the middle of pristine Bush. Great Braai pit for blooming and the best hikes, rock pools fur swimming and game to spot. We had the best time away from the world for a few days of complete relaxation.

Great venue! Wonderful hosts and staff. Made us feel most welcome.Trails well marked.
 Owner personally came to visit and say hello. Much appreciated. 
Staff assisted with extra hands. Was extremely helpful.

Bateleur Visit

We truly enjoyed our stay at Bateleur. The venue is remote, with beautiful trails and animals. The hiking trails were somewhat marked well (we did get lost once - some marks on the rocks have started to disintegrate) We were welcomed by a beehive in our fireplace as we started the fire the first evening, but all turned out good :) The house is truly simple, with the bare minimum requirements, but since we were there to enjoy nature it truly doesn't matter. The stars are beautiful at night and birdlife abundant! The Boma was a sure treat! We will definitely be back. Thank you Bateleur!
