On our 2020 Road Trip we had decided to make Clarens a stop as it is an old favourite.  We had always gone with the kids and this time we were on our own so "no booking ahead" was our plan.

We found Woodlands Retreat and booked for 1 night.  We had travelled through from Kimberley and arrived late afternoon.  After refreshments at Clarens Brewery Bar we drove to the Pin Location sent through by Roy.  

Our room was spacious with a view out on to the garden (and what a garden... beautifully kept and chickens in the corner, fruit trees and numerous flowers and fauna).  Jess was always around to keep us company (only if you want it!).

We had booked for 1 night and on arrival decided to stay 2.  We had dinner in town the first night and enjoyed a relaxing braai on the stoep with the cleansing thunderstorm the second night.

I would recommend Woodlands for singles, couples and families.  It is clean and all the little extras are provided i.e. tea/coffee/milk as well as everything needed for a braai.

Cherry on the Top

This is the second visit we have made to this resort and once again I could find no fault with it! If you looking for a get away where it is quite and undusturbed this is the place. The room we stayed in had been refurbished and was roomier with a giod kitchen counter and basin. Everthing is well maintained and the Manager Joe was extremely accomodating. I will be returning again in the future.

Brilliant once Again

Sometimes not going in your own car has its benefits. My trip to Clarens was one of them. Carpooling my way to a wedding in Winterton meant, of course, that I had to carpool back. Luckily for me, my friends husband had a meeting in Clarens. So our route back to Joburg went through this exquisite town. My luck got even better when I bagged the last room at Woodlands Retreat for the night. 

It was one of those random September cold fronts. Misty, and with such low clouds that we saw very little of the Golden Gate National Park on our way in. We hadn’t exactly packed for such weather, which had us all worried about freezing the night away. Especially me, as a single pringle.

I was worried for nothing. The cosy rooms at Woodlands are equipped! They’ve got heated blankets, underfloor heating and wall heaters. I’ll happily stay here over the winter solstice. 

The crisp, clean sheets with a down feather duvet, and four pillows meant that I was as snug as a bug in a rug. Let me take a moment to mention the mattress, as its firmness really added to my snuggy, buggy-ness. It was bliss. 
 
We went out for dinner that night to Joe’s recommendation which was excellent. However, each room has a fridge (with complimentary tea, coffee, milk, and water); as well as a kettle, microwave, hot plate, and kitchen basics. On top of those, there are braai facilities on the patio. Needless to say you can have a quiet night, very comfortably, indulging in all the craft spoils you bought on your wonderings through town. You can even have wine by a bonfire in the beautifully manicured gardens. Wood for such can be bought from Joe. 

Whilst we can only stayed for the night. You could very easily stay longer. No breakfast was offered, but that did not take away from the experience as there are so many bakeries and coffee shops in a short walks distance. 

10/10 would stay again. 

Cute, cozy Clarens Spoil 

We spent the weekend at Woodlands retreat recently after going through a bit of a tough time. When we arrived, the room (Cherry Cottage) was slightly smaller than expected, but this did not prevent us from having an amazingly relaxing time! Joe was very welcoming and Shireen went out of her way to make us feel welcome. Even letting our tittle one feed the chickens and collect eggs!

The room is exceptionally clean and comfortable, bedding as soft as a cloud and there were even welcome drinks in the fridge! Enough wood for more than one braai. The venue is away from the busyness of the town which was exactly what we wanted but is close enough to walk to. The property itself had enough to explore to keep a toddler busy for more than one day (supervised of course!) 

The lack of TV was great, but the wifi meant I was able to stream the soccer from my phone 😂 

We will definitely be back again! 

Quiet, quaint and friendly 

The rooms are well appointed and very clean, if you looking for a quite getaway this this the place. The vehicle was parked on arrival and only used when leaving again everything is in easy walking distance.

The host and the manager are very friendly and welcoming. There are no TV facilities but this is great to get away from it all. There is free WiFi available.

This was a welcome break away and will definitely stay again

Weekend Away

We stayed in the Golden Maple Room and it looked exactly as shown in the pictures. They provide for everything needed for a self catering room and even provide you with fresh milk rusks as well as coffee and tea. They have optional under floor heating, electric blankets and a heater in the bathroom if needed during cold times. The hosts are very friendly. We accidentally broke the plastic hook of the curtain rail by opening it too hard and it was fixed no questions asked the same day. The shower water pressure was perfect and the water did no take long to get warm at all and was warm each time we showered. Definitely worth the stay.

Perfect stay

The room was very small and as a result, the underfloor heating made the temperature in the room unbearable and although electric blankets were provided it was not needed. Bedding was neat and clean and coffee and tea with fresh milk were most welcome. However, the size of the room, with very thin walls (and we were unfortunately unlucky to have a honeymoon couple in the room next door) did not allow for much relaxation over the weekend. The lack of toiletries, as well as one geyser serving more than one room leading to cold showers, certainly contributed to a weekend to forget. WiFi is not consistently provided, hence communication is difficult.  Rating agencies for guest houses are certainly "captured", and Woodlands Retreat can do themselves a favour by comparing their product offering (and as a result price charged) to some of the more established guest houses in Clarens.

Neat and very small room.

What an awesome little resort. Cute and cozy for the cold Clarens evenings. Will definitely be back.  Cherry Cottage looked just like the pictures on the website.

Perfect Cozy Getaway 

We were a family of 3 generations, my grandmother, my mother, my brother and myself. We stayed at the 5 bed cottage for 2 nights amd it was wonderful! Upon arrival, the hostess, Sherrene, was so welcoming and friendly. The cottage was a bit small, but it was perfect for the 2 days that we stayed over. The basics and everything you need is provided, it's very clean and modern. I LOVED the electric blankets on the bed for those cold nights. Although it's a bit cramped we made it work and it was enjoyable. This is a quiet little place, well situated. It has so much potential for the future plans that Sherrene has. We will definitely go there again! We had a lovely stay. Thanks Sherrene & Roy 💯
