De Kelders

We chose the Umnenge Lodge because of the positive reviews and the beautiful location right by the sea. We were very warmly received by both Mary and Richard and by Cola, the young mixing dog. We had booked 2 nights and we wanted to see whales, of course. Mary had kindly booked for us a whale watching safari at Ivenhoe in advance. We had a room with sea view and we could watch whales from the balcony or even from the bed. The room and above all the bathroom were African-style furnished. Clean and very comfortable, even if a little dark. Very early in the morning we ate very much together with Mary and Ricks crew in their kitchen. But everything that was pleasant about the trip and no expense.

We had a lovely lodge, amazing room and warm living quarters. The sea view was superb, we were enchanted by the place and the owners!!

It's a great place.

When you first arrive at the lodge, you have a wonderful view of the sea. You will be greeted with a friendly welcome. Breakfast is the best you can get there.

A really cozy lodge with a wonderful family

The Umnenge Lodge is still a classic B&B: breakfast is served with the whole family and you have the opportunity to talk about a wide variety of topics. The entire lodge is decorated in African style, very lovingly designed and therefore very different from the otherwise mostly very modern accommodations in De Kelders. The view of the bay and the whale is great and in the evening it sits wonderfully on the large terrace. The only small disadvantage is that there is only breakfast from 9 am.

Very individual

We were last at Umnenge in October 2012 and had a super time.
We just had to come back.  We booked for 2 nights and stayed an extra... just too comfortable to want to move on. Great view of the bay. Easy walk to and along the cliffs. Great hosts (including Dora & Lady). Could not ask for more

We came back for more!

This was an interesting B&B....we stayed at several during our trip. The location is spot on for scenery. You can walk across the yard and out towards the ocean where there is a gorgeous path and the scenery is just beautiful there. Stay in De Kelders, not Gansbaai. We wished we had not even spent a night in Gansbaai as the town itself was very small and a little sketchy. Not somewhere you'd want to "wander" around or sightsee. But we felt very safe in De Kelders and this guest house. This was one of the places that we stayed at where we felt that we were staying in someone's house. I mean, we were, a family lives here full time, but we almost felt a little intrusive asking for anything and there isn't a common area to "hang out" in for guests. This is a family home with children, and the upstairs has two suites for guests. It feels like a family home, not a guest house. The suites themselves are gorgeous, but there is not an outside area unless you want to go for a walk. Balconies provide a limited ocean view and more like a view of the neighbors houses. Breakfast was limited but ok, fruit cereal and yogurt, a fried egg was offered, and out of the 10 guest houses we stayed at this was our least favorite brekkie. We did stay at mostly upper end B&Bs, so if you're just looking for a place to crash and want a little more luxury and space than the smaller B&Bs then this may be for you. We would skip this place if we returned and in fact skip Gansbaai all together. Shark diving was awesome in Mossel Bay so don't feel like you need to stay here just for that!

Beautiful location

Spent a lovely night at Umnenge Lodge with Mary and Richard.
We even got lucky enough to see dolphins in the beautiful sunset!
Couldn't have asked for a better start to our honeymoon.

Wonderful Stay

We were very warmly received. We were there in September 2013. Our four-year-old daughter felt very comfortable there. You can watch the whales from the bay, because they come very close to the coast.

Family-friendly lodge

We stayed at Umnenge Lodge for 3 nights and had an absolute perfect time there. Great breakfast. :) Very nice rooms, and also very friendly people. Rich organized for us the Great White Shark viewing, and he also organized the braai in the evening. Hope, we can come again.

Perfect days at Umnenge

We spent two nights at the Umnenge Lodge with our one and a half-year-old son. Unfortunately, there were no more whales to see, but that was not our main concern. Richard was a very nice host who prepared us a great breakfast. We had some nice conversations and always felt very comfortable. Unfortunately, his wife and children were not at home while we were there and so there was no way to have a dinner at the lodge. The restaurant recommendations were also great. For our son, a huge basket of toys was ready in the room. Everything was clean, very nicely furnished and with a fantastic view of the sea.
