We have just returned from a 3 night stay at Drifters Wild Coast Lodge at Port Grosvenor, being our 2nd visit.  We had to to go back after having enjoyed it so much on our first visit, despite poor weather.  Sadly Covid has seen the lodge very quiet since re-opening, but everything was in fabulous condition and the personal service we received from Robbie and Joe, left us wanting for nothing.  We were served delicious food, which included fresh fish and even crayfish .. a real treat and they were happy to accommodate us with packed lunches, which we could enjoy whilst out trail running.  The rooms are simple, but clean as is the communal dining room / bar.  The lodge is ideally situated, close to Waterfall Bluff and also Mkhambathi Nature Reserve, so you are spoiled for choice as to where to hike / run. Hidden in the milkwood trees, the deck overlooks the bay and we were fortunate to see dolphins and whales.  The beach below is quiet and a real gem. You will need a 4 x 4 to access the lodge, as the roads are poor.  You can arrange a pick up if you don't have a 4 x 4 vehicle.

A very special place

We have just come back from a two night stay at the lodge,Rob,Joe and Nomabantu were absolutely fantastic,the place is very neat and clean,and all three went out of their way to make us feel extremely welcome,we had a wonderful time,and can highly recommend the lodge,thanks once again to Rob and his team

Wonderful staff

Let's start with the positive ... Luphathana is a very remote but amazingly beautiful camp with adequate accomodation and kitchen facilities. Lorna the Manager is a gem and assisted us with everything we needed. As 2 women travelling together and the only 2 guests on our 2 night stay we felt safe and protected.

On the negative ... when we booked our stay we specifically asked if we will be able to reach the camp in the vehicle we were travelling with as we do not have a 4 x 4.  Upon confirmation that we indeed would be able to we booked and paid for our stay. The road to Luphathana is a road from hell with huge bolders and ditches and definately NOT accessible by a car that does not have a very high clearance and a vehicle that we did not have. It was a 14 km 4 hour drive at night that I would not wish on my worst enemy, and I do not understand how this was mis-communicated.

Luphathana Adventure Camp 

The main eating and relaxing area is based in the center of the rooms. The rooms are basic thatched rondavels, in good repair, clean and with their own bathroom. The beach is small and very clean. (the manager does early morning beach cleans). The food is home cooked meals and delicious. The bar is self help and there is plenty cold beer and cool drink in the fridges. The view from the deck is the best!

Beautiful location

The roads leading to the lodge is extremely bad with virtually no roads in some areas. Cannot be accessed without a high bakkie or 4x4. The parking is across the river and guests have to haul their goods from there to the lodge via a pathway through the woods. The lodge itself is extremely basic with tent cabins and no bedding or toiletries. The common area is reasonably equipped but the stove is totally inadequate with only one stove for twelve units. Only two plates worked on the stove. The fridge and freezer is also totally inadequate for twelve units. The surrounding area is tick infested. We were albumen by ticks and suffered serious tick fever. Hot water was quite an issue as we did not have hot water most of the time. This establishment is definitely not recommended.

BoodyRocco Luputuna

Such a lovely place to get away from city life. Beautiful beaches, lagoons, rivers and rocks. Accommodation at Greenfire lodge is clean and comfortable and the hosts and staff a warm and welcoming. The road access was a bit challenging in a normal car. 4x4 suggested, but the manager of the camp can advise latest conditions and assist with transfers if required. It is worth the effort to escape to such a beautiful place.

Special Place

To reach it, you have to follow a very long track. In dry weather I suppose it's practical without too many problems. In wet weather, in rainy weather, things get very complicated. It's a very isolated place. It's a very isolated place. On the oceanfront where we're advised not to go any further than a few meters. Anyway, the water is cold, the currents are violent, but the landscape is fantastic. Our hostess, who picks up French cuisine, had prepared Beef Strogonoff... without paprika. It's a very isolated place. It's a very isolated place where you can find a bungalow in South Africa. But what can we get without paprika? When we can't get to see the bungalow without a bungalow, we have to go through a very simple road, but the truck has been running through the roof for three nights, and we've never been able to get to the bungalow without a bungalow.

We can get in the mud.

Located close to the Indian Ocean and lost in the middle of nowhere it is an ideal place to come to recharge and enjoy the real nature. There is a very large and beautiful beach near the Lodge(3 minutes walk) The couple who run this Lodge is very welcoming and friendly. The food there is very good and copious. There are typical small villages to see in the vicinity or you can walk along the ocean on both sides. There is a wreckage about 3 kilometers from the Lodge that is worth going to. Possibility to see dolphins I've seen of it) and whales that I also saw in my summer but was on the beach at the end of my winter break on my winter break.

Wildlife

After running 22km, we were warmly welcomed by the lodge who conjured up lunch. Accommodation is comfortable huts with warm showers. Towels & soap is available & even beach towels. Everything is clean & tidy on the site. 
Dinner was fresh fish & braai/bbq meat with potato bake, green beans & salad. All prepared in the open kitchen of the dining/communal room. The bar is stocked with a few good bottles of wine & ice cold beer aplenty.
The beach is just down a pathway of trees & there are bodyboards, frisbee, fishing equipment to keep you busy.

A place of rest

Virgin Coast Wild Coast can easily recognize thanks to a good background, which will create Greenfire Wild Coast Lodge. We came here just for two nights and it was definitely a little, feel we could stay here and five nights and still could do.
The journey itself is difficult to lodge. You have to ride through the Transkei and it is a big task. The roads in the Transkei are perhaps the worst in the whole of South Africa. Do not measure anything kilometers, measure the time that you need to go. Especially the last couple of kilometers off the coast.
Those hardships but worth it. Lodge has a wonderful location right by the sea, with beautiful beaches and wild rocks. Rondoval style bungalows are modest but you are in the Transkei, it must still thinking.
All electricity is produced by solar energy. Lodge is in a protected natural area and very honored that fact.
Management and staff are very committed to making you feel good. Great cooks! They are ready to tell you many interesting facts about the area and advise you where to go on a trek.
The surrounding landscape is very interesting and fascinating sea. Very glad to come back for a longer period.
