Montagu

Malherbe Guesthouse was a TripAdvisor find, and lived up to expectations. On arrival, after seeing a friend for lunch in Swellendam, we were greeted by Kathleen at the front door of the beautiful building - one of the oldest in the town. She opened the gate to the secure parking area, then showed us to our poolside room through the delightful and richly-planted garden along a peach-pip strewn path. The room was exactly as offered on their website, with more than the normal provisions including a cafetiere and fresh coffee - and a small flask of Jerepigo (local sweet fortified wine) and two tasting glasses. It was delicious. 

There was a well-equipped bathroom with good shower, bath, and twin basins, and plenty of towels. The guesthouse has solar power so we were not interrupted by the regular load-shedding.

The breakfast next morning set us up for the rest of the day: first a bowl of fruit, yoghurt and granola, then a croissant, scrambled eggs, bacon, mushrooms and tomatoes. The scrambled egg was particularly tasty, with parsley and dill cut into it. Kathleen told us some of the history of the house, and we explored the rest of the ground floor and tried to work out where the 14 children of an earlier owner had lived.

Kathleen, who relocated from Johannesburg a year ago, has taken over the guesthouse and spent much of the past year taming the garden and adding her own personal touches all over.

It was a delightful place, and Kathleen was a warm host with advice on the town and surroundings. Our regret was that we only had one night in Malherbe: we will be back.

A warm welcome and a delightful stay 

We had a nice contact with Cathy, the landlord, right before our stay. The contact was always warm, and we felt like family members from the beginning. We felt very comfortable in the Malherbe Guesthouse. We had a small cottage with everything you need in a paradise garden. The pool area is also beautiful with enough beds and umbrellas. Although the painting is on the main street, there is no noise from the street. It is absolutely quiet. The cottage itself is very comfortable and tastefully decorated. The bed is very comfortable. But the best thing about the Malherbe is that the guests are the hosts. You can read each guest's wishes from your heart. You can come to the garden without any noise from the main street. Fantastic guesthouse with the best hosts

My wife and I stayed in Montagu after a road trip across South Africa and used it as a base of operations of sorts for venturing into the surrounding areas and Cape Town for activities, hiking, wineries, and the sort.  We arrived at the Malherbe Guesthouse and were quickly helped to our room.  The rooms are tucked back among a beautiful garden that provides a lot of comfort and privacy.  Our room was fantastic! Very modern and comfortable with lots of outlets, a fridge, a television, a huge bath, and a very nice shower.  The lounge area of the guesthouse itself was comfortable and we were provided a delicious breakfast by the owner each day.  The guesthouse is also walking distance to a Spar, pharmacy, and some nice small businesses in Montagu, which made it very convenient for the shopping we needed to do between outings.  The pool was also very nice for the hot days if we were back in town in the afternoon.  All in all would highly recommend this guesthouse!

Sublime Stay

From the moment we were welcomed by Micky to our departure, everything we wanted was provided. The room is spacious and comfortable with lovely en-suite bathroom and terrace overlooking the swimming pool. LED light for load sharing. Great advice on restaurants and walking tour of Montagu. A wonderful breakfast the next morning of fresh produce outside on the terrace. Very convenient for restaurants and the town centre. 

Wonderful stay in Montagu 

We really enjoyed our night at the Malherbe Guesthouse in Montagu. The Dutch owners were very friendly and helpful and the rooms are really beautiful and very big with huge bathrooms. Everything is spotless clean and there are so many small details in the rooms that make life easier. Breakfast was a treat in the morning with self-made bread, choice of eggs, fruit and yoghurt. Great place to stay in Montagu!

Fantastic place

This is an excellent bed and breakfast.  The rooms are very spacious, and spec clean and the garden which they surround is lovely.  The hosts provide a nice breakfast, and know everything about the town and neighborhood.  Strongly recommend!

Wonderful

We were at Micky and Joop's for the third time. We lived right by the pool. The room is generously furnished and is cleaned every day. Since it is always very hot in Montagu, there is also air conditioning. Also on the terrace it is comfortable. You get from the room directly to the swimming pool, which invites you to swim. There are enough beds. The garden is also very beautifully laid out. The daily breakfast, which is celebrated with love by Micky, is also wonderful. A successful moment of our trip. We will surely come back often. In Montagu there are many ways to see. See the trails to all the guesthouses. In Montagu, the city is well worth a visit and the restaurants are also well worth a walk every week.

A Delightful Guest House in the Lesser Karoo

A wonderful accommodation that you can highly recommend. A clean pool, fancy facilities and a great breakfast. What more can you expect from a B&B in South Africa?

Sweet accommodation with great service

Unobtrusive hosts; fantastic breakfast; reasonably priced mini-bar; comfortable bed and pillows; secure parking; what more could you ask for. Would award 6 stars if I could. Cannot recommend this guesthouse highly enough.

This converted old residence is a wonderful place to stay. Our hostess Mickey was so nice, helpful, and went out of her way to please. We had 3 rooms for the family, all around the pool where we had an afternoon swim. Rooms were big, super clean, and very comfortable. Breakfast was a delight. Definitely would return, and will recommend it to my friends
