We were in room two with a shitty, unattended bathroom and decorated furniture, and we'd better get rid of this lottery place.

Old Bude, down farmed

My wife and I booked the horseback Safari with Robert. We enjoyed it throughly! We saw lots of antelope. And came near all of them. 10m from Rhino's, Hippo's and Giraffes! Other animals we saw was: springbuck, Bontebok, waterbuck, golden and blue wildebeest, eland, gemsbok, red hartebeest, nyala, elephant, crocodile, fallow deer. This is a very nice way to exeperience a 3hr game drive. In being a farmer myself, I think there is too much game for the size of farm, and when Drought may come, there will be losses. The lodge itself looked a bit under staffed, only saw 3 people the morninf of our visit. For the horseback safari itself I give full score!

Horseback Safari @ Plett Game Reserve

Gorgeous wilderness lodge located in Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve. Rustic decor in lobby and rooms. We were booked in the family suite was lovely and private however very difficult to bring suitcases as it's rocky and up hill. View from room gorgeous, lovely baths, super comfy bed and big fire place. Staff was basic not overly welcoming or friendly felt as if the guests were an inconvenience for just being there. Did not feel a warm welcome which we had felt in every other lodge, hotel and guesthouse. Staff were often on cellphones and just seemed unhappy. It's too bad gorgeous place just needs some more smiling faces. 

Agreed Beautiful Lodge Basic Hospitality 

The previous reviewer (Nov 2018) summed up our feelings entirely. A beautiful, charming and rustic location, but let down by standards of service that are not reflective of the 'Luxury' title or prices charged. The girls do their best, but clearly have limited experience of four star hospitality and their was no presence by the Owner. Wine only available by the bottle, pool only opened on request, no snacks available between breakfast and main meal (other than a bowl of grated cheese), and the meals and breakfasts had to be ordered from a limited menu in advance.  I won't elaborate further as checking back on previous reviews, comments have been consistent since 2011 and little has changed. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the cosy charm of the Lodge and the accommodation, but it was without doubt overpriced.

Beautiful Location, Basic Hospitality

There appears to be no staff training or supervision here and it shows in poor standards and sorry maintenance. The managers replies to comments here have talked about how they strive for quality .... But they clearly don't understand the concept as complaints continue.

In our case there were no welcome drinks. The room was very dark and poorly maintained with broken windows, nails sticking out of floorboards, lamps that didn't work and more.  Dinner had to be ordered at breakfast, they ran out of drinks etc.

At breakfast there were no serviettes, the coffee was incredibly weak, the list of defects is long.

One evening we asked for wine by the glass, was given the wine list to choose from, then each wine we asked for we were told want available by the glass. Apparently no wine is available by the glass, but they don't say that, they tell you about es each one in turn. 

Dinner was a huge portion of flavourless food. Eg a tomatoe wrap which consisted of undercooked fill pastry and something that didn't taste of tomatoes ... A bland mush is perhaps the best description. As for the desert, it was a dried out brownie, that looked good on the plate but was very dry. 

I don't blame the local staff, they are from another culture and haven't been trained. I blame the owners that never show their faces. 

As for the game reserve it is more a farm. The size is unsustainable so predators have to be kept in small enclosures to prevent them eating the other animals. Larger reserves run everything on a sustainable basis and run everything together. Crowding cheetahs and lions in small enclosures is not good practice or humane. 

As for the guides their knowledge seems superficial. They don't explain which species of zebra, giraffe etc. It's as if they don't know!

Having seen how good other places are, how professionally they are run and the value offered, this place is only worth one star ... If that. 



Terrible standards

ATTENTION - please read. I never write reviews otherwise, but Barones is an absolute rebound. We were booked there for four nights on our three-week trip to South Africa. It was the most expensive accommodation on the whole trip. The two family homes in the woods looked very idyllic to themselves. They also looked nice in the sun. But after a short time they turned out to be pretty down. But bad was that spiders (the really big ones!!!) would come into the room at night. After my wife had hired eight staff staff staff members on the first night to protect our three children, we had three oversized guests on the next night with eight beds. Also, not everything in the second room was so idyllic to me. But not everything in the second room was so well written, and in the last 20 years, it was so much more expensive to move in the house than if we had to spend a lot of money in the next room.

Caution - Lots of spinning in the room

A wonderful setting off the beaten track, with a hotel crammed with history,  beautiful rooms, a game reserve tour, a delicious well cooked dinner from polite attentive staff.

Tranquil, historic character charm ,great hosts

The internet has raised high expectations, which unfortunately have been overshadowed by the reality of the concrete view. We too have been reconciled by the friendly service girls. The food was not to be objected to. The price of the experience is too high. The location is far from luxury.

Holidays in South Africa

This log has earned everything else, but certainly not the term luxury. Here everything is decaying and decaying, decaying furniture, decaying buildings that no craftsman has seen for years... it's raining everywhere... what can I say? Nothing is even close to right here. The price-performance ratio doesn't fit at all and it's an unfrozen shame.
