Super stay in the dormitory. The place is located in front of a beautiful river, where you can swim or do other activities such as paddle or fishing. Mark and his family are very attentive and friendly hosts. You can enjoy a great relaxed and friendly atmosphere! Recommended!

Relaxed and friendly atmosphere

Waking up to the sunrise, overlooking the peaceful river is a memory now engraved in my mind. This is the perfect place! The kindest hosts, who are involved in community projects that blew my mind. A perfect location, not too far from the city center, yet the very definition of a hidden gem. We will never stay anywhere else in Port Elisabeth, neither should you.

As travelers who are interested in deepening our understanding of the places and people where we have the opportunity to visit, the hosts' connections to the community in the township of Motherwell were incredibly valuable. If you are interested, the lodge can help connect you with the Hand in Hand Art Gallery (highly recommended) and possibly other educational or volunteer opportunities.

The positive spirit that Mark and Tena have created here is truly outstanding.  Our stay generated the opportunity for some priceless experiences and hopefully some life-long connections and friends!  Without a doubt, if we have the opportunity to visit PE again, we will be staying at 28 Towpath.

Peace, Beauty, and Community

The Redhouse community is a hidden gem on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth...this back packers is right on the river and in a peaceful little village where everyone knows everyone...it feels like home from the moment you arrive. It's peaceful but there are nearby activities if you want...surfing, visiting township art galleries (a great side tour if you get the chance)...stay a day or stay a week....

A Hidden Gem

We have traveled a lot and once in a while when you are traveling for a long time you come to these places where you just feel comfortable from the start. There is a relaxed atmosphere, the hostel is run by locals and there a people hanging around you immediately start a conversation with and like to hang out with. The view is marvelous, the food delicious. I have been travelling for a very long time now and have to tell that there are very few hostels where at the end of the day all guests and the owners sit down at a large table to have dinner together and the evenings become very long. These were usually the best places to stay and I wish we would have got more time to consume the good spirit and energy around this place. Highly recommended!

Something special

This place is magical, the house and the vibes make you feel at home. It is 25 minutes from the city centre but worth a million times. The trains from PE train station to Redhouse station (5 minutes walk from the house) are frequent and safe - timetables and directions provided by the lovely staff. 

I recommend this beautiful house to people travelling with family, friends or alone looking for some quiet and an amazing family that supports permaculture living and sharing.

Beautiful place, amazing family

Myself and Jack worked at this backpackers for 3 weeks last year in October. After travelling for 8 months in Asia, we decided to visit Africa. Mark and Tina are absolute legends. The two owners instantly make you feel at home. They even offer water sports at the hostel, you can take the boat out and Mark will even organise a trip to Ado National park. The hostel will put you in contact with locals from the township Motherwell, where you can visit an art studio, that aims to educate young peoples about the history of South Africa and even spend the day with local children and see recent flowers projects in the township. I honestly can’t recommend a better backpackers in P.E. If you’re looking for a great work away in South Africa, get in contact with Mark, you can get involve in permaculture at the hostel or help out in local projects run by some of Marks closest friends. 

I can honestly say, after travelling 11 months in Asia and Africa, this is by far my favourite backpackers and the memories from 28 Towpath will stay with me forever.

Best backpackers in P.E 100%

If you are interested in learning something about SA and it’s culture from different points of view that is the place to be! You have the chance to visit Motherwell with locals, relax on the riverside or learn surfing in PE. In this Backpackers is something to do for everyone!

Amazing experience

We felt at home right from the start! It's a little outdoors, but it's a beautiful place. From the lounge you have a great view of the river and you're surrounded by a beautiful, big garden. The people are all very nice and helpful. We also took a trip to the Addo National Park from here and it was very easy to reach. We can really recommend the backpacker! :)

It's a wonderful location.

This place is really amazing. people are really wonderful and they welcomed me like one of families. They have always good vibes in the house. In the evening, we always had great organic/vegetarian dinner together. 
I’m sure that this place makes your travel more wonderful.
