This was one of the best backpackers we have been in south afrika.
Pappa G and his staff are very friendly and helpful. 
We wanted to stay for one night but as soon as we got there we decided to stay another night.
It was a great place to stay.
Thank you so much.

Great!!

Took ten hours & five combis to get down from Lesotho before sunset. 
That ice cold Castle was one of the most refreshing ever. 
Anelly - if I got his name right - is a cool dude too. 
Well designed two-storey rustic wooden oasis, pretty much completely reconstructed after being gutted by fire.  
Lovely outlook and atmospheric open common areas, upstairs balcony seating, lawn area round a pool, well wooded gardens, and an easy stroll from practicalities. 
Food pretty good & well-priced. 
Dorm has seen way better days, but I had it to myself, and it was nice & quiet round the back. 
Diverse characters to strike up conversation with, such as Leon & Papa G. 
All in all, a relaxing fun spot.

Glad I moved on before strike unrest in the village, roadblocks with burning tyres, violent threats to local businesses - there are precedents in Port SJ unfortunately. Can't be as relaxing as I had it for folks who are residents.

Rumbling in the Jungle

The plan was to stay only for 2 days in this hostel, but we ended at staying more than 5 days. Port St. John’s is a really interesting and beautiful place. You can call it a raw diamond! The nature is so nice, but there is still a lot of trash in this city.. this is because of strikes and problems with the government. But look better, and you will so much enjoy it here! We slept in the safari tent, this was so nice with a great view! Staff and the owner “papa G” are also very helpful and friendly.

Good hostel great staff and owner

I had a disappointing stay here, and my impression was that they are more interested in running a bar than running a backpackers hostel. When i booked, i was told by the manager that she had booked me a shuttle to collect me from Umtata. This never arrived, and eventually they sent a shared taxi to collect me. No apologies. The dorm room was very basic and there is absolutely no security - no lock on door no lockers. I upgraded to a better room the next night. The food is decent and you will see jungle monkeys in their back garden. I also appreciated the tour that i took with Ronald. Most of the time though, i felt that i was in the way, and the staff were more interested in partying.

Focused more on party crowd than running a backpackers

Hotel with very good location in Port St Johns. It has different buildings and spaces. We are housed in a room with a wedding bed and shared bathroom. The room is simple but comfortable. The bed is comfortable. There is a ceiling fan. The community areas are very spacious and diverse. There are different bathrooms. The shower has good water pressure and the temperature is ideal. There is hand soap and paper to dry hands. There are no towels. The cleaning is excellent. The cleaning lady is very helpful and hardworking. The rest of the staff is friendly. The community kitchen is well equipped and spacious. It has a barbecue. Although most restaurants opt for the restaurant service, as the bar is affordable and good. There are several dining rooms in the same area. There are also more rooms and bathrooms available. There are also more rooms and bathrooms available.

Savage and comfortable at the same time.

We booked a double room through booking.com, but when we arrived it turned out that they did not have our booking, nevertheless they managed to fix the problem. So, i guess you guys have some problem with your booking system, from reading other similar reviews as well...Room itself is clean, very-very basic and small. Common bathrooms and toilets are not so clean, could be better maintained.
There are many locals hanging around, which I do not mind when they could only stay in the bar/common area, but it is not okay when they are free to come to the backpackers area. In that sense you should improve you security.

In general the place would be really nice if it wasn't open for public and if there wasn't parties.

Would not stay again

We're very happy with our stay here. A very cheap backpacker with friendly staff. The highlight was the band and the locals who performed traditional African dancing. We didn't expect that much action in the off-season.

Nice place with different types of accommodation possibility to plant his tent... pitt dej possible bbq pool...bar and excellent pizza house. music concert a place has the cool...very good and cheap proper sanitary hygiene no more...owns a high terrace overlooking the sea and forest below...

We stayed one night in a single room with an outdoor shower. It's a lovely place and although it's a hostel, it's pretty clean. The hostel also has a bar that's very crowded at night.

A Hostel in the Wild

Good backpacker but with a few bemools: no key to the rooms (visibly babacool philosophy in force here), a huge Saint Bernard that smells very strong (don't touch!!!), ducks and geese spreading their feces (...), a very very average reception (a young man brown, bearded, completely mutilated, extra-terrestrial limit), very approximate cleanliness. Otherwise good location, small pool available, bedrooms or dormitories or 1 fun tent/terrace with a view to the back (and which is adjacent to the sacalow of one of the owners who is very friendly), rather cheap and good bungalow restaurant, free WI-FI kitchen, service of the laundry for 50 rand (a great price for this laundry).
