We stayed at the Pepperwood Lodge in Johannesburg for 3-nights in mid-Nov ($57/night). The lodge, located in a quiet suburb north of Johannesburg's downtown core, was a large old ramshackle 2-storey house sitting behind gates and a high wall on a spacious, beautifully landscaped property. While clearly old and well used, with original doors and woodwork and narrow passageways, it had been well and lovingly maintained and gave a bit of the vibe you might have felt when you visited your grandparents out in the country. The ground floor housed the office, a couple of guestrooms, and the breakfast area in 2 adjoining rooms (one of which I can't help but think of as the parlour, with with comfortable stuffed chairs and bookcases full of old books) that looked out onto the large, covered brick patio with an additional table and chairs. The rest of the spacious back yard had a large pool (clean water, but a lot of leafy debris from the winds), nicely landscaped flower beds and a number of gazebos and sitting areas. 

Our ground floor room was large and spacious and, like the lodge itself, finished comfortably but not luxuriously. It had pastel walls and dark carpets, but with an overall white theme – ceiling, doors, cabinets and headboard. It was furnished with a large, comfortable bed and side tables, lamps, an arborite-topped cabinet with a good supply of glasses, a chair and 2 double closets that had more than enough room for the luggage and its contents. There was an overhead fan, heater, flat-screen TV with plenty of channels, mini-fridge, microwave and safe. Entry was through a glass-panelled door into a glassed-in area that once was a patio but now had a table and chairs and a day bed. You then entered the bedroom to the left through sliding glass doors, or the patio to the right through double patio doors. The bathroom was compact, with a small sink and wall-mounted cabinet, window, and a large shower. 

Breakfast was excellent, with fruit, pancakes, granola, yogurt, coffee and a choice of fruit juices, and a hot breakfast that you selected each morning on a little order pad. The owner, Ros, was friendly and helpful, arranging airport transportation (R450, 45 min in good traffic) and helping us through the intricacies of using Uber (no one uses taxis here). 

The only disadvantage of the lodge was its location – in a suburb with nothing nearby except one restaurant. That was mitigated, though, by the ease and inexpense of Uber: pick-up was within 5-min, and we used it to get to a nearby mall (R60) and to the hop-on hop-off bus office downtown (R160). And the one restaurant in the area, the Clay Oven (400 m away), was superb. They offered a selection of well-priced Portuguese-Greek fusion dishes and, to top it off, dropped us back at the lodge after dinner. 

If you are expecting luxury in the heart of downtown Johannesburg, the Pepperwood Lodge is not for you. But if you appreciate the feel of a country house with English gardens in a quiet, safe area with helpful hosts at a very attractive rate, this is the one. Recommended.

Excellent Lodge in Suburban Johannesburg

I had the great pleasure of staying at the Pepperwood Lodge for a week. Service orientated, friendly and efficient staff you will not find easily. The room was my room away from home. Every detail seen to. Incredible stay!

Blissful Week

We often go to Pepperwood Lodge because the service is great and the rooms are well equipped.the breakfast is very nice. It is also wrll sittuated and close to all of Jhb. The facilities cater for all types of guests.

Best B & B i have ever stayed at. Greeted by the friendly staff with a smile. All the details in the room make a difference for me. Toilet paper was neatly prepared. Bed made perfect.  Tea and coffee in the room. Wifi available.  Peaceful.  Breakfast absolutely delicious.  Thank you pepperwood!! You will see us again

Nice place close to everything, with great service. There was no issues even when we arrived at odd hours. I would stay there anytime. The family rooms where great for our family stays as well, and nice and secure parking

Greatstay

The hotel is located on the outskirts of Johannesburg, in a secure and supervised area. The staff is ready and friendly. The rooms are clean and decorated normally. The living room with a sofa bed and open fireplace can be shared.
