Wow, what a special place. I truly don’t believe pictures do this place justice. It is an incredibly stunning safari lodge set in beautiful Welgevonden Private Game Reserve. My family and I only stayed two nights but it felt like we’d been there a week by the time we left. 

Because it’s such an intimate lodge - they only take a maximum of 10 guests at a time - you really get to know the staff, who are incredibly welcoming and friendly from the moment you arrive. Our tour guide, Joseph, was a fount of knowledge and taught us soo much in the short time we were there. I also have to call out the INCREDIBLE food. The food was Michelin star-level food for every single meal. Truly every single meal. Menu items like slow-cooked beef short rib, smoked salmon mousse with Zulu bread, peri peri prawns, and the endless array of perfectly made desserts. I can honestly say every meal was perfection. 

Overall, I would highly recommend this lodge to others and hope to be able to return to Makweti one day in the near future.

A Truly Special Safari Lodge

We stayed 3 nights at Makweti and had a great time. Our very knowledgeable guide Joseph went out of his way to look after us and ensure we had a good time. Trying his hardest to track down the elusive leopards so we could tick off the big 5 ! The staff at the lodge were always smiling. The lodge is small only catering for 10 guests which made the whole experience feel personal and relaxing , the food was wonderful, we ate too much ! We loved watching the animals from the deck at the waterhole. Thank you to the team for a wonderful stay.

Authentic relaxing atmosphere

We’re well into 2024, 2023 is a distant memory, except for the trips to the bush. An opportunity to spend time at Makweti Lodge in the Welgevonden Reserve in the Waterberg is not to be missed, and as a gruelling year drew to a close I was able to spend a blissful long weekend at my favourite lodge in SA.

Makweti has an overall sense of calm, everything speaks to relaxation, the camp is one with the natural landscape, each chalet is nestled in a private ‘corner’ of the camp, I love the decks with the little pools and lying on my back to watch the stars at night serenaded by night-time bush-song. 
The hospitality at Makweti is impeccable, the staff make it their mission to ensure guests have a memorable stay, attention to detail is second nature. 
Makweti’s menus cater for all palates; each day brings new taste experiences, dishes are considered and varied and often include an experimental element. Meals are as exciting as the game drives.
It matters not what time of year I visit Makweti, each season is abundant. January is particularly delightful; antelope, zebra and buffalo babies abound, the heat draws colourful sun-seeking creatures out to soak up the warmth, and the bush sounds like a philharmonic orchestra. Even the cats have a bounce in their step.
At Makweti they’ve harnessed the gods and mastered the art of creating a special experience which leaves guests wanting more and reluctant to leave.

My favourite place in South Africa

We had an excellent stay at Makweti Safari lodge! Very kind staff and personal, good food, beautiful environment en great safari's! We had a beautiful lodge with private Pool where we could relax between the drives! From the big 5 we only did not see the leopard but saw a female cheeta instead!! It was amazing! She appeared gracieus walking on our path during our drive with Byron!
The main lodge is so beautiful! Every day beautiful set tables and delicious meals and wines! And a warm welkom with a nice fire in the fireplaces after the afternoon drive! 

Beautiful lodge, great safari's

What an experience! Having never been on a safari before, we really didn’t know what to expect. Neil, Jess and the team were all fantastic. There are only 5 lodges which gives you a lovely sense of privacy, but at the same time, gives you the opportunity to get acquainted to the other guests with a more personal touch. Special thanks to Byron, our guide, who did his best to make sure we saw the whole beauty of the reserve and of course ‘the big 5’. Unfortunately the leopard eluded us, not to Byron’s best efforts. But our very close experience,with a friendly bull elephant, was a complete once in a life time moment that I will never forget! Another special mention to Zabiwe, the happiest lady I have ever met, and her wonderful team in the kitchen. They created some very special meals, which was just what was called for after a busy drive! The only slight moan, was that on arrival, and not until our last day, our plunge pool was not clean. I appreciate, we are below trees, that will have leaves falling into the water & when the filtration system is started, it is noisy. But the pool looked far more inviting on the last few hours we were able to use it. But please do not let this deter you from going to this amazing place! 5 stars 🌟

Wow , what a great place to stay at Makweti . Very friendly staff , magnificent cook and fantastic game drives. Our  Ranger Neill explained a lot , not only about the animals , but also the environment , it was very interesting ! We had a wonderful time and will certainly come back !!

Fantastic stay at Makweti

We visited for our honeymoon this month. We were greeted by the staff who were absolutely fantastic throughout with some if the best service we've ever received. 

Our game driver Joseph was very knowledgeable and did all he could to spit the big five, if which we had 4 in 4 days with some extremely close encounters with elephant, rhino and lions.

The lodge itself is nicely equipped with generous rooms, excellent private deck although the plunge pool is on the cold side.

The food is fantastic and all meals are well thought out, fresh, and give a local flavour with many varieties of meat and vegetables.

Beautiful dark skies.

Fabulous location. About 4.5hours door to door from airport. 

A note on temperature if going. It is chilly in the evening and morning. The lodge provided ponchos, Blankets and hot water bottles.

Excellent!

We just had an amazing time at this wonderful lodge. It is a fantastic relaxed but very comfortable setting and we managed to see all the animals (well done Joseph). All the staff were great and the food was particularly good. We particularly enjoyed relaxing on the deck overlooking the waterhole

Amazing place

The incredible interaction with the bull elephant after our drinks on the evening game drive was memorable!  The food and Makweti's attention to detail in the luxury chalets was of an exceptionally high standard.

Food, game drives and services were excellent. I have traveled the US, many Asian countries and South Africa, and I have no doubt that Makweti can be ranked as one of the best accommodations I have ever stayed. There was only one thing which bothered me was the smell in the cupboard. Everything else was exceptional.
