On the 5th of November 2022, I attended my younger brother's wedding at the Au d’Hex Estate wedding venue just outside Wellington, as I was part of the wedding party, we stayed in the manor house on the estate right next to the venue the evening after the wedding we all went back to the manor house for a last few drinks before heading to bed. In the early morning hours 3 men wearing hoodies and masks gained access to the estate by lifting the electric fencing with sticks and stones yes, I know very secure. They then made their way to the manor house but first, they helped themself to some of the leftover drinks (that’s how much time they knew they had and how comfortable they were). The 3 men entered the manor house splitting up where one went to my room where I was sleeping the other to the sitting area and the last to the girl's room across the hall from me. The one in my room helped himself to a few of my belongings, a camera and a lens of mine were among those, the replacement value of everything that he took from my room is just under R40 000. The one in the sitting room got away with the bride's wedding earrings and car keys. The other guy managed to wake the two girls in the room where they screamed and they made their way out and off the property. While all this happened, no one showed up, no security, no armed response company, or anyone from the estate. The Sunday morning, we had the Wellington police there and detectives to try and solve the crime. I was assured by the manager Nanette Pienaar that their insurance will cover the expenses and not to worry. It is now almost 7 months later and still, nothing came from it, just yesterday SJ Engelbrecht from the company Strive Capital sent me an email saying that they won’t pay out anything. The reason is that there was no forced entry now please tell me how is lifting electric fencing not forcing entry. So currently they are hiding behind their insurance companies' excuses while I’m still without my camera equipment and not able to do my work properly for the last 7 months, losing income with every day that passes. It is clear as daylight that the people involved don’t care about their clients or the safety of their clients, ask yourself a simple question, as a bride after spending all the money that you saved up for your perfect wedding day just to wake up with stranger in your room on your magical first night as a married couple, we were lucky that the two girls woke up it could have been a lot worse. If you go read the other reviews, it really starts to look like an “inside job” so before you choose this venue make sure you know what you are in for. Every time I think back to my brother's wedding this is the memory that I’m stuck with. I hate that it had to come to this but I don’t really know where to go from here so if anyone has any advice, please feel free to contact me.

Its not safe!!!!

Where do I even start.
It’s been 3 months since my wedding, and to date I still cannot overcome what has happened to us.

Besides the heat inside the glass house, which we all know is a problem - I want to share a different story.

We had about 94 guests in total at the venue for our wedding.
So we had a gift box on our main table for guests to drop a gift of currency.
During the evening of the reception, it came to our attention that one of the Aud Hex staff has removed the gift box from our table and move it to a less crowed area.
We noticed that everyone did not get the opportunity to provide us with a gift as everyone was asking where the gift should be dropped.
We then had to go fetch the gift box where the staff members has placed it (taking into consideration that this area is just another room not being used at the venue and only closed with curtains)

Later the night the box was then moved again to the isolated area without consulting us, and we just moved it back.

Also keeping in mind, that the venue had no power at various times during the evening  due to load shedding and a faulty generator.
So in essence, the power was off most of the evening and there was no lighting.

The day after the wedding - we then noticed that the gift box was tampered with (as it had a flimsy lock on, which was not used to lock the box, but rather just to prevent the lid from being easily opened.)
We noticed the lock has been removed - we didn’t think much of it until we opened the box.

Out of the 94 guests who are very dear to our hearts, we only counted 12 envelopes inside the gift box, 12 envelopes that was equivalent to a 5 figure number.
We then started digging around and asking questions.
The 12 envelopes was all from the house hold family members who sat in the front row who got the opportunity to drop their gifts first (so it ended up at the bottom of the box)
All the remaining guests envelopes that was at the top of the pile is gone.
We then started asking our family members if they noticed anything, many people confirmed that the box were so full that they had to force their envelops into the box.
Some even confirmed and can proof that they had put in their envelop in the box, however out of the 12 envelopes, those specific people’s envelopes were not there.

We raised our concerns to Aud Hex and they assured us that they will review the footage to confirm if they can pickup any movements.
After multiple follow ups, 30 days later Aud Hex came back to us stating that after reviewing the footage, they have not picked up any suspicious movement and that the camera’s was pointing to the other direction of the venue..
(I will leave this just hear…..)

PS : disappointed customer.

Fraudulent event

Venue is stunning with manicured rose gardens; but beware of the hidden costs! One single helpful waiter went above the call of duty to try and make up for absent management, poor communication and disappointing service. 
We attended a wedding function and stayed in the hotel; when buying a cup of coffee at the bar, my wife was told that the coffee in her room should suffice(??!!!) breakfast was a ghastly overcooked bacon/sausage/egg mix, again with only a single waiter tending to a group of 20 or so. 
Later we found that the juices and water laid out on the table was an added cost (for a prepaid meal); and the extra charges just came tumbling in after that. 
Under the current management this gem of a venue is will close its doors prematurely. I Hope they wake up before it’s too late.


Service leaves much to be desired 

We unfortunately had a really crap experience at Au d’hex and from the reviews it doesn’t look as if we had been the only persons that had the same issue.

If you book accommodation there it would be best to have a second place in mind as a backup to stay over as they cancel your CONFIRMED booking without consulting you to make space for a wedding taking place. 

We took time and effort to make sure we have enough accommodation for our guests over December and booked accommodation before hand as most of our guests coming to our wedding are traveling from far and Decembers are peak seasons in the Cape. Therefore we booked all their rooms and received email confirmation. 

When we followed up again to make sure everything is still fine and if they can send us the details for the deposit as they have not done it yet, then only were we notified our booking is canceled as there is a wedding taking place at their venue and they require the accommodation. ???

Here we are, again looking for the perfect place which we thought we found just to be dropped and not cared about, hopefully one day they might stick to their booking sheet to inform people that there are currently bookings for that time thus that particular date is not available instead of dropping people that took time and effort to go and visit them, dropping people that booked that date first (12Months ahead) and took their own time to send followup emails.

I would like some feedback from the owners themselves If the owners gets to read this review.


Normal bookings always come second 

If you want to have a wedding that will be amazing in any season of the year, this is the place.
Originally I saw it in summer with all the vineyards, flowers and roses at their best. Come the wedding date it was end of winter, but still, oh so beautiful and green even with the vineyards not showing any green. 
It was a pity that the original pergola/veranda was taken down before the wedding and the couple had to pay extra to have a structure in place in stead of only a bare tent. 
The night before the wedding we arranged our own mobile "braai" and enjoyed a "lekker kuier" with the closest family and "team" members of the next day´s event.
The sleeping arrangements were great, but we had some continuous problem with water pressure to the showers on the "upstairs".
After a very hearty breakfast the next morning, some could just take in the beautiful surroundings, while others were preparing for the event. 
We had an amazing photographer, good food, an amazing DJ and a lot of compliments about everything.
The original area that were promised to be the dance floor were ultimately not allowed to be used and that made the usable dance space a bit small.
It seems they now have a glass enclosure, which should solve many of their challenges and make it even more amazing.
Even though I believe every wedding does have a few hick-ups here and there, I think everything went very well overall.

Privileged to bare witness to my son´s wedding at this beautiful venue

We booked at Au d'Hex in February through booking.com, and our booking was confirmed on 10 February. We left for our holiday, which was a celebration of our 15th wedding anniversary, on 24 April, and were surprised to receive a telephone call from an Au d"Hex employee, while we were sitting in the airport, telling us that they had cancelled our booking as a wedding party which had allegedly only just booked, required our room. At that stage they made no offer to find us somewhere else to stay and the person speaking made it clear it was a decision of the owners rather than her own decision. After some heated conversation and argument, she agreed (eventually) to identify some alternatives as we were unable to access the internet while undertaking long distance travel. In 'recompense' for their conduct they offered a bottle of wine. We spent the two nights initially booked with Au d:Hex at a nearby wine estate, but needless to say the promised bottle did not appear. The lovely receptionist at our hotel contacted them to remind them of their offer, but they couldn't even be bothered to show up with the wine, and told the receptionist to give us a bottle from the estate we were staying on (one of the cheapest available of course). 

If you look at the conditions of booking at this venue it states: 'You will be charged 50% of the total price if you cancel after reservation and a further 20% of the total price if you cancel in the 30 days before arrival', making, by my calculation, 70% in total. They however apparently consider themselves  free to cancel with impunity without any recompense (or indeed genuine apology), and indeed without any obligation to find an alternative for guests whose contract they have broken. 

This was the only negative experience of hotels we had in the Western Cape, but it was an extremely unpleasant and stressful start to our celebratory holiday.

Cancelled our booking

Devine spacious rooms, stylish antique furniture, comfortable beds, Lariska is a lovely host. Highly recommend. Lariska went out of her way to accommodate us on short notice. Lovely breakfast in the well maintained garden.

Excellent Accommodation

My husband and I stayed in Au d’Hex as we were attending a wedding nearby. From the moment we arrived the staff couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful. We started with lunch which was delicious. Our room was immaculate with some really beautiful features. The guesthouse was very safe and really cosy at night time. I would highly recommend a stay here, the staff, the surroundings and the relaxing atmosphere are 5 star.


Amazing!

We stayed at Au d'Hex the past weekend! Oh my word! What a stunning place! 
I was blown away by the stunning garden and our room was beautiful too!
We ordered a picnic basket in advance and that was our supper, which we enjoyed on the floating jetty that evening.
It was very hot when we arrived, so we spent the afternoon in the small (but sufficient) pool. Very refreshing!
There was another couple, but we never saw them during our stay and it felt like we had the place to ourselves. 
The bed was very comfortable and we woke up nice and fresh the next morning.
Breakfast was absolutely delicious too! Lovely coffee too! 
All the staff that we dealt with were very friendly and we have no complaints at all.
I would recommend Au d'Hex and will definitely love to return one day.

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!

I bought a one night stay here for my husband for Christmas. The hotel is beautiful, quiet and peaceful and we had a wonderful stay. The staff were available and helpful. For a romantic hotel stay I can highly recommend Au D'Hex!
