Hotel from hell. Advertised as pet friendly on Booking.com, as soon as we booked it, the full advance payment was taken from the credit card for a deluxe double room with a balcony and a kitchennette for a week, and a day later a message was sent that they can offer pet friendly is a twin room on the ground floor (which is 15% cheaper on the same website). Many calls to customer service later. the property acknowledged confirmation of the room we paid for. When we arrived, there was nobody at the reception. Eventually, managed to get hold of the owner on the phone. she sent her daughter to meet us. No masks, no sanitisers, no paperless check-in. The key given to us turned out to be from another room and did not fit the lock in ours. The owner was in another city, the daughter was on the way out and could not find the right key. Apparently, the cleaner walked out with that and other keys (although apparently was not allowed to do so) and was not answering calls. We wasted 4 hours on my birthday , the key or the cleaner  did not turn up, no spare key, the owner was not answering phone calls of Booking.com customer service. Eventually we left, and  the owner promised to issue a refund. Of course that did not happen. When Booking.com contacted the owner, she told them that she lost my credit card details. Three weeks and many phone calls to customer service later, booking.com issued the refund and told me they will delist this property. The room was dirty, old furniture, curtain rail dangling loose above the entrance, glass broken on the shared balcony - hotel from hell. We went to stay at a dog-friendly accommodation in Knysna area, and what a difference that made!

AVOID AT ALL COSTS

If you want to visit a guesthouse where you’ll be treated like family, Wilderness beach lodge is your place. The owner and her family are some of the warmest, kind-hearted people I’ve met and we had an amazing time. Our children felt welcome and were treated so special; we were never worried about them or that they were an inconvenience. The lodge is a short walk to two amazing swimming beaches and the lagoon, which is perfect for children too. The village is also a short walk away so we barely used our car. The room was comfortable and even though the kitchen is not fully equipped we were offerend anything that we needed from the main kitchen. The shower gave some trouble, but they are aware of the problem and in the process of fixing it. This was definitely one of our best family holidays. We’ve been to Wilderness before and stayed in a couple of guesthouses but this was by far our favourite, location-wise and also value for money.

Home away from home

We had a wonderful time staying at this guest house! Beautiful ocean view from the balcony! We could walk to the beach as it was just a few steps away +-25 meters. We had excellent breakfast! The rooms were tidy and clean. Such friendly service and really enjoyed our stay!!! 

Beach vacation 

Good location, great views, saw dolphins, quality of breakfast was substandard to what we had experienced in other guesthouses from Sun City to Port Elizabeth to George.We feel we were overcharged for what we received.  Sadly the noise from the main road behind was constant throughout the night and the rear windows clearly need soundproofing!! We would  not stay in this property again.

Good Location but disappointing

What a disappointment this guesthouse turned out to be! Let me start with one or two good things: the bed was very comfortable and there are very good views of the sea and beach and we did get to see whales playing beyond the breakers.

Overall, the lodge signals lack of attention. My bathroom light was not working - to her credit, the manageress did get it sorted by the following morning. The room itself is dilapidated for the most part: the blind rotator was broken; cupboard doors don't fit properly; electric cables are badly fixed to the walls and dirty; wifi is very flaky especially on mobile devices; the lodge smells dusty. The rooms are poky. I cannot imagine how a family of four would cope in the accommodation.

On arrival, we were told that breakfast is not available during the off-season and we could find breakfast at one of the village restaurants - which is true. Other guesthouses in the area, though, were clearly offering breakfasts. There are no honesty bar type facilities in the guesthouse. Basically, we had to do for ourselves. I will not choose this place again. For not much more money, you can find much nicer in the area. I've been to some of these others before and received good attention and courteousness - even in the "off-season". The final strike came when we were departing the guesthouse. The manageress wasn't there to see us off and to ask whether we had had a good stay. These kinds of absences speak volumes.

Disappointing guesthouse

Had a lovely stay in Wilderness. Stayed in the dorm room at the top. Gorgeous ocean views from the room and the bunk bed. Fell asleep to the ocean and woke up to the sunrise over the sea.

Very helpful staff - directing us into town for a lovely meal at the local restaurant. Really friendly and gave us ideas on what to do in the surrounding area.

Short walk into the main town - around ten minutes. Quick access to the beach.

Definitely stay here if you are heading this way! 

Lovey views - perfect loaction

What an amazing location for the lodge.  It is so peaceful and tranquil. The owner is very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is fantastic. The rooms are cute, and tries to stay updated, but does need a bit of tlc.

Beautiful location

We arrived in Wilderness very late, and it was more of a coincidence that we rang at this lodge. But at the first moment we knew that we could feel comfortable here. We were lucky enough to get a room with sea view in the first floor, and since we were traveling with our son, he got an extra room for a little money. The breakfast was rich and good, and for my son there was always an extra portion if he wanted to. We also got help in every way, whether it was booking tours, information about sights or just choosing the restaurants. But the only point of criticism was the expensive Internet, but it bothered my son more than me. We'll never forget those days and when we come back, we'll be able to.
