This was my first hanok stay in Korea and I really enjoyed it. I'd definitely go back to Sarangbang if I visit Gyeongju again. However it's just a "lower category" guest house, thanks to it's low price and great surroundings, it gives you a real traditional experience. The room was clean, I had my own bathroom and small kitchen connected to it. The feel of the warmth of the ondol heating, and the light coming in on the traditional doors, those are the things I'll never forget.

Budget hanok-stay in old city part of Gyeongju

The host was very attentive.  She was not available when we checked in but she left very clear instructions on our room.  The room is big, with tv, free wifi.
She even left us some food in the fridge, eggs, bread, jam even rice in a fully equipped kitchen.  Wowwww. I am impressed. No wonder this guest house has rave reviews from other guests and I totally 100% agree. Everything was super clean including showers and shared kitchen.  We had coffee at the courtyard and we enjoyed every moment of our stay. 

This place is mostly famous amongst foreign tourists but even my Korean friend who joined us was very impressed. 

I totally recommend this place if you are visiting Gyeongju. Its location is smack bang in town, across the street at Macdonalds at Taejong-ro. There is signage in the small alley to get here.  If you are not able to book a room at Sarangbang, the owner has another similar place called Silla bang.

Best Traditional Stay in my Entire Trip to Korea

The place is just across the road from Gyeongju Express Bus Terminal.walking down the road next to the busy main road for about 20m, you will see a sign on the wall, stating that you turn into that alley and walk for another 15m , you will come to 706-6, the back door of Sarangbang guesthouse. The room is typical Korean style and you sleep the korean traditional way.  Ours was Room no.1 with an attached modern bathroom and toilet, with all toiletries provided. We also have a well equipped attached kitchen where we could cook. There are plenty of bowls, plates, cups, chopsticks, spoons, butter knife, pots and pans. There are toaster, microwave oven, a thermal pot , stove and a refrigerator. Breakfast was self service with toasted bread, eggs and coffee. You can do your washing and had it hung out in the sun to dry. After a day out visiting, you can sit at the verandah, admiring the flowers in the garden, with the cool breeze blowing. The area where the guesthouse is located is very safe and there is free fast wifi. The place is near to restaurants and a supermarket. Around the place there are plenty of bakeries that sell the famous Gyeongju bread of red bean paste and barley.

A home away from home

Good location near the bus terminals, the bus stop from the high speed rail station, and the bus towards Bulguksa. This was the only traditional hotel we stayed in in Korea, and it was an interesting experience - you make your own bed from the blankets on the floor and the walls are paper thin (luckily we didn't have noisy neighbours). The lady running the place seemed very friendly and you can serve yourself toast and juice for breakfast. Price was good too. The room had underfloor heating but was still quite chilly.

Good traditional hotel experience

The location was fantastic as it was right near the town centre and bus station. The room was all we needed for our family and was quite fun as it was korean style which we had not experienced previously - lots of wood beams and paper on the walls. The lady running it was waiting for us when we arrived and we did not see her again so not sure what we would have done had there been any difficulties. We were a little perplexed by the towel situation. Towels (hand towel size) were drying outside so we just helped ourselves to them as we didn't have any with us. The beds were stacked in the room and we just had to work out how to construct it, not sure if we got the layering right but made do. We lay on the thin mattress and a sheet and this, together with the rock hard pillow, made sleeping extremely uncomfortable. We had access to the kitchen, which we shared with others, and the bathroom which was for our use only though it was off the kitchen which was communal.

I'd stay again if I had some sort of airbed with me. Despite the uncomfortable bed it was well worth it considering the location and cheap price, and since we only stayed 2 nights.
