A beautiful tranquil hanok in Bukchon Hanok Village. Very kind, responsive and accommodating staff.  Loved the amenities and breakfast delivered to my room. Close to a number of cafes and restaurants yet very peaceful. Such a unique experience, especially for a Westerner first time in Seoul.

A Lovely Place!

We stayed for three nights and loved the experience of being in a traditional Korean house. We were slightly concerned before arriving that we might find the beds too hard and would have difficulty sleeping. Once we tried them we realised this was not a problem at all - it seems there are specially-designed foam layers underneath the traditional mats. You do need to be able to get down to floor level and back up again. For us, this was not a problem and we slept very well every night. The place is really peaceful and the service on arriving and for meals was of an exceptionally high standard. We ordered traditional Korean food for breakfast and dinner (two nights only) and it was always delicious. 

This was all perfect for us, but it might be the wrong choice for some people. You have to remove shoes while inside, which can be uncomfortable if you are used to orthotic support. The furnishings are traditional and therefore not as plush as a regular hotel. The buildings are raised and the steps up and down are steep (as they are in all old areas of Seoul). A few concessions were made for the modern traveller - coffee machine with extra pods on request, small TV hidden in the cupboard, face masks, modern bathroom - all of which we appreciated (though did not use the TV). 

On the whole, this is a most interesting traditional experience, much more than a hotel, and the staff were wonderful and extremely helpful. Our only regret about staying here is that we were out seeing the sights every day and did not have more time in the quiet and beautiful environment, and did not take advantage of the sauna and other options available on site.

Excellent Service, Beautiful Small Hotel

The property itself is awesome. 140 year old Hanok with period furniture. The courtyard and sitting areas are beautiful -- especially at night. The location is just below the famous Hanok Village walk. You can arise early and take a walking tour of the village before the crowds get there.

BUT BEWARE. If you have any mobility challenges, this is a DIFFICULT place to stay. There are steep steps to the courtyard from the gate. THERE ARE NO CHAIRS. The beds are on the floor. Authentic - YES -- challenging to get up in the night and go to the bathroom - YES. 

We had booked three nights and could only handle one. To be clear - this was NOT the fault of staff. It was OUR FAULT for not being honest about what we would enjoy.

So, if you want an AUTHENTIC Hanok experience - this is the place - but BEWARE - you are getting the REAL THING - is that what you really want?

Beautiful traditional property and great location at the center of bukchon village. Love the feel of being in a local neighborhood. This is walking distance to a lot of restaurants, hanok houses, palaces, little shops and coffee houses, and small museums. We absolutely enjoyed our experience here  but I also realize that this kind of housing is not for everyone. They also provide hanbok for you to wear within the property grounds. Every inch of the property is picturesque and goes perfect with the hanbok. The staff is great and took a lot of amazing photos for us. We had a small trouble using the gate key on our way back to dinner on our first time. It was pouring rain and the emergency contact spoke little English. As it turned out, you have to touch the keypad first. It might benefit the guests if there's an instruction for this near the gate. Food is just ok for us but it's not an issue as there are plenty of options very close to it. 

Beautiful traditional property in a great location

Really happy with my stay here! would definitely be back, such a pretty traditional place and you can take really nice photos as they provide you hanbok to wear as well. The staffs were really polite and provided top notch service. Place is really clean and food is really yummy too. Thanks for making my stay memorable (:

Perfect stay at Rakkojae!

I stayed for 2 nights and also signed up for the cultural tour to Andong. Rakkojae Seoul is very beautiful and I loved the view. Breakfast was delicious with generous portions. I ordered bbq beef ribs for dinner. It was tender and very yummy! I saw Mr Kim cooking the beef for hours. As for the cultural tour, it was an eye-opener. Mr Kim led the tour and took my daughter and me to UNESCO sites. We had a memorable time! :)

Excellent Stay and Cultural Tour

Very clean floor n toilets but table tops need a good wipe as some r dusty.
My only regret was we had to depart at 8am n hence no breakfast was provided n we missed the delicious breakfast others mentioned. Rakkojae bought paris baguette sandwiches for us to take away in the am.
A very appreciated service was the free laundry. We gave the laundry upon check in n got the back in the evening. 
Also enjoyed the sauna esp when they served biscuits n delicious sweet drink at the sauna.

Beautiful hanok

Our two honeymoon nights at Rakkojae were just perfect. We warmly thank all the guesthouse staff for making our short stay in the patio room so terrific. The bathroom was trendy, clean and convenient. The beds were very comfortable. The collective mud sauna was a great plus for our rainy arrival. Both the continental and korean breakfasts were refined and delicious. The place in itself is a gem and very well-located in the Bukchon district. And we were strongly moved by the hearty welcome, the kind congratulations on our wedding and the lovely gifts for that special occasion. We highly recommend this human and traditional experience! 

Wonderful stay in Rakkojae Guesthouse ❤️

I had a wonderful time in Rakkojae. 

From booking till check out, they will attend to your request promptly. Staffs were warm and friendly. Breakfast given was tasty and rich. I can't describe it as it's beyond awesome. I walked out with full and satisfied tummy and the night spent at Rakkojae is surely to be treasured.

Will come back again for sure. One must come and spend one night at least to feel and know more of their historic wonderful treasure.

Rakkoejae is GREAT

A pleasant rare opportunity to experience Hanok living.  This centrally located residence is walking distance to the palace and Buckchon Hanok Village.  The moment you step in, you're magically taken back in time with all the tastefully decorated artifacts from the past.  Traditional Korean music plays in the background drowning out the city noise. 
Things that were great:
1. Room was clean.
2. Mr. Kim, the manager, was exceptionally thoughtful and always responsive to our needs.
3. Traditional korean breakfast (it's a spread) was delicious.
4. Great coffee machine.
5. Provided us with a free mobile phone with wifi so we could explore the city; very thoughtful.
6. Dressing up in traditional king and queen korean attire and taking photos in the traditional setting.  7. Helped us do our laundry

Minor issues:
1. Sleeping was uncomfortable as their traditional floor mattress is quite thin. Just wondered if might consider getting a thicker mattress to make it a little more comfortable.  That said, we recognize it's part of the traditional experience.  

2. kindly did our laundry and a portion of our clothes shrunk; I guess cotton does that with intense heat 😀 and we didn't give specific instructions.
