We went to Villa Carmen for a long weekend, and in a second thought, because we pretended to stay in the Delta de l'Ebre, an incredible place for birdwatchers, with fabulous landscapes to enjoy. But there was no accomodation available in the Delta villages, so we had to wide our search zone, and it was a great idea. 

Villa Carmen is only fifteen minutes far from the Delta, and three minutes to Les Cases d'Alcanar, a lovely beach town with a nice seventies' look and a lot of delicious and cheap  restaurants specialized in fresh fish. I absolute recommend to visit it and have a long walk along the seaside, at dawn. 
The guesthouse itself, I mean Villa Carmen, is a beautiful XIXth  century house in the outskirts of the town. Don't get afraid by the industrial-looking sorroundings, because when you'll cross the metallic door of the house, you'll find a paradise-like garden with shadowy trees and a quiet, refreshing atmosphera. You'll wish to stay there forever with a good reading and a cup of tea...or a cool beer, in summer. Villa Carmen has three hotel rooms and three apartments, and I stayed in the biggest one. It has a big bedroom with a comfortable double bed, a cot and a dressing room; a large living room, with a flat TV set and  sofas (including a sofa-bed) , and a kitchen with a solid wooden table and chairs for all the family. It has an appropiate bathroom, of course, with a fine working shower...And the best: a big, awesome terrace with an incredible view of the garden , where the nightingales seem to sing just for you. We loved it in a way that compelled us to get up early just to enjoy the place and birdwatching from the terrace. 
It is all comfort and wellbeing in a simple, elegant and easy way. Don't expect any luxury but the landscape and the beauty of the house itself, but you won't miss anything (maybe only a better wi-fi service, but you'll survive without it). The owner, a gentle German lady, will wellcome you and give all the information needed. She's very kind, and not intrussive at all, so you'll find free to enjoy the place without unwanted familiarities.  We didn't had breakfast there, although it looked great from the dinning room door. 
We absolutely recommend the place, specially in spring, when you'll enjoy the beautiful view with all the birds singing. Comfortable, not too expensive, and in a fantastic location, close both to the splendid beaches of south Catalonia,  and to the nature hotspot of the Delta de l'Ebre, one of the better places of Europe to enjoy birdwatching.

The house I'd like to own

If you can find this place you're doing well. If you don't arrive by at least a Land Rover - preferably a JCB - then don't be surprised you wheels fall off, your tyres shred or your suspension breaks on the 100 meter boulder-strewn drive. Then, when you do get there it's like Fort Knox and there still isn't a sign on the gate that you are there! Building is lovely. Agnes, front of house, is lovely. Room was OK. But that was it really. The WiFi might work, but probably won't. The breakfast was average - why oh why serve un-chilled concentrated Orange juice when you're in a region that grows Oranges!!?? The Tomatoes given to us for the first breakfast were past their sell by date then - and we were still being served the same Toms 3 days later. The booking said that the payment would be taken 7 days before we arrived - but no, so €350 out of our holiday budget that we weren't expecting (because we thought it had already been paid). A zillion flies at breakfast - now, a zillion is a lot. So why not produce net covers for the bread.cold meat etc anyway - why wait to be asked. I've said enough - the test is always would you stay again and it is a NO. If it wasn't that agnes was so lovely it would be a one rating.

Would we stay again? mmmmmm - No

We stayed at Villa Carmen for two nights looking for a place to stay near the south side of Delta d'Ebre. We couldn't have wished for nothing better. From the rich breakfast served on the luxurious garden to the beautiful, airy bedroom --ours was number 3-- the experience was really wonderful. Proprietor Agnes was at all times a charm and overall we couldn't recommend it more highly.

Beautiful place to stay near Delta d'Ebre

We stayed here for just two nights, wanting to visit the Delta lÉtebre area.

It is a very charming, very old house, run by a lovely German lady Agnes.      Even with a satnav it was extremely difficult to find, mainly because she doesn´t actually give a proper address on her web site, something we pointed out to her.   In order to find it, you are either going South from Barcelona or North from Valencia, heading to a town called Alcanar.   If you are going South, just before Alcanar, you will see a large Chimenea factory on the right-hand side (Chimenea is Spanish for fireplaces – however, here the word is started with an “X” – really confusing!).   If you stop outside this factory you will see a white sign on a pole saying “Villa Carmen”  and a lane, both on the right-hand side.   If you are driving North, then you will pass Alcanar and it will be on the left-hand side.   Hope you´re not too confused!!    

Now to the Villa itself.   As I said, it is old, I think about 18th century, very rustic and very rural.  There is are two large balconies, both accessible to guests, where you can relax during the day or evening.    There is a farm right next door (not quite sure what to call it really!) with cockerels, dogs and goats and all the accompanying noises!   Our room was large, very clean, with old furniture.   Bathroom was huge, again very old but everything worked fine and they give you  the biggest fluffiest bath towels I think we´ve ever encountered on all our travels.   Alternatively, the tv was the smallest we´ve ever seen!!     From Agnes´website you will also see that she has a couple of apartments.

Breakfast was outside with tables nicely laid out.   We had cheese, ham,  orange juice, bread, jams and eggs done any way you wanted.   It really was a lovely setting.   

To eat in the evening, it´s best to drive 5 mins. to Le Cases de Alcanar.   Down the lane, turn left onto the main road, short drive and follow the signs on the right to Le Cases which will take you down to the seafront.   All Spanish restaurants and a lovely promenade.
