Walking the Camino, I really needed the comfort that this little hotel has to offer. My room was perfect; spacious and clean and comfortable. The ladies in charge were very friendly and helpful. They did my laundry, fed me and made sure I was ok. So happy was I that I stayed 2 nights. On my rest day I climbed up to the Castillo above the village and that was one of the most memorable times for me in my whole 3 weeks on the Camino. I had the castle to myself and the views from up there on the hill were epic. They provided the best photos of my whole trip. I'm so glad that I did not rush through Castrojeriz and miss experiencing both the picturesque village and the castle with its views. Very memorable and a highly recommended hotel. Lovely hotel garden for customer use too. Just loved this village!

Just perfect!

We booked our room on agoda.  The owner was quite business-like although pleasant. The female staff member who checked us  in was very lovely, cheerful and helpful. The kind of person who whistles while she works - very refreshing. The room was basic but clean and comfortable. 

We inquired about breakfast for the next morning and the owner had to check how we had made our reservation before quoting the price. When she realised that we had booked through an agency she said the breakfast would be 7 euros, which we understand is 2 euros higher than for those who had booked their room directly. Not a big deal, but it did rub us the wrong way that we should be penalised for using a booking agency, so we went to Le Meson restaurant (Just off the Camino on the way out of town) where we had a great breakfast for 5 euros. It looked to us like very few guests at La Cachava ate breakfast there. Maybe a message in that. 

Good room, breakfast price issue

Nice room with own bathroom. Tea making facilities, no milk or coffee. Friendly staff, did my washing for no extra charge. Good meal at night. Very homely, old interesting building. Outside space for drying washing or having a beer.

Lovely house

I was going to say this was probably the worst place I have ever eaten in but in fact it was without doubt THE WORST. I generally do not review places I don't like but in the interests of other travellers and peregrinos I feel I must. 

My partner and I went to eat here this evening. I ordered the pilgrim menu and my partner ordered off the a la carte menu. We received a bottle of watered down wine which we returned. No apology. It's the wine of the menu we were told!  

My starter of tomato and spaghetti turned out to be baby food and inedible. My partners starter of toasted goats cheese was so hard it couldn't be cut with a knife. My partner sent it back.  Even the manager agreed it was unacceptable. 

Then my partner's second course arrived. Fried eggs, bacon so old it was like rubber and cold cold fries swimming in oil. 

We just left.

My ardent advice is do not eat here from a culinary and, even more, from a health perspective.

La Cachava is a great place to stay, directly on the Camino.
I have stayed here twice and the owner even remembered my group from two years previously. Amazing considering all the people she meets.
Rooms are spacious and comfortable.
The evening meal is excellent and the owner has a good knowledge of wines if you don't want to go with the house wine.
Definitely recommend this to anyone walking the Camino
