This is a new business run by Alicia Pasquale and her husband. Both are lovely, friendly people and it is their stated intention to run the business in a very laid back, casual style with the emphasis on Spanish ethos. So far so good. They have a beautiful and unique Spanish building in need of further renovation. There are three rooms accessed via a splendid courtyard - this is beautifully tiled in the Moorish tradition and offers both outdoor dining and a tranquil venue for those who like the quieter pastimes of holiday life. 
The accommodation is classed as "self-catering, with kitchenette facilities en-suite". Our room and the one opposite (unfinished at the time of this review) share kitchen facilities. We expected en-suite kitchenette and this was a disappointment. That is shared pantry, shared fridge freezer. Our host stated at the beginning, "this area runs, I don't know how, but it does". More on this later. Our room was excellent, apart from the air-con unit which woke us early on with the sound of water pouring from the housing during the night. Unfortunately, the chest of drawers was positioned below and our newly unpacked holiday clothing was soaked and some of our vital documentation (computer print-outs) was washed out by the water. No matter. Alicia mopped up full of apologies and said it would be fixed. Which it wasn't. The same happened again two nights later! I fixed it by removing the old drinking water bottle causing blow-back pressure. Why the bottle was there who can tell - needless to say it wasn't put back!. So it went on - I list some of the other problems we had - all due to a lack of professionalism/ naivety.
 
* Housekeeping hit and miss: (bedding changed after just three nights then not again at all. Fresh toilet rolls delivered to our dining table whilst eating. Towels changed after a week, but only by request. Cleaner visited twice in the two weeks. Kitchen waste bins not emptied for days on end. A new bigger bin is not the answer if it is not emptied. Coffee supplied ran out and not replaced. Similarly with the washing up liquid. Smelly dishcloths & sponges not renewed. Refurbishment of other rooms continued when all the other guests (except us) had left. Banging and drilling is simply not on over the evening meal. It could have been done during the day when guests were out. There is good reason why this wasn't possible. (See later...)

* Equipment: no kettle!!!!! (One bought later after heating tea water in a pan) 2-slot toaster. (Instant queues!!) Dirty old microwave replaced half-way through. Trailing socket on the work-top for 3 appliances only. I predicted that someone would unplug the fridge/freezer and not put it back... sure enough... an accident waiting to happen. Total defrost. One large coffee pot for four cups and at one point four rooms wanting to use it. Outdoor tables - four rooms and only two tables! We emerged one breakfast time with our cooked breakfast prepared in the kitchen and came outside to find that the  Germans had got up early and spread their table cloth over "ours". What happened to all the tables shown on the web-site photos all with beautiful yellow table cloths?? Misleading Alicia. No waste bin in the room....

*Shared facilities: If people arrive all at once, this won't work. The kitchen reminded me of our wing at Uni or a badly run Youth Hostel. When some selfish people run out of commodities, the temptation is to help themselves. A litre of beer and 3/4 bar of very nice chocolate disappeared.... and it is not for the Hosts to replace them either.

*Location: quite rural. If you have no Sat-Nav or phone gismo, then prepare for a long long search. (Took us 2hrs to find it) Despite Alicia saying everyone in La Xara, knew her and the location - we just asked the wrong people I guess. Found it by sheer chance. Why is this property completely unsigned/signposted? There is a huge notice board outside the property - completely blank. Why does this couple hide their business behind huge locked gates? Something going on there - we did not get the impression of a high crime area.

* Whilst we loved the potential of this place as a rural retreat which is what we sought, why did the owners e-mail us to state that they do not accept large groups? Oh yes they do! We did not like this dishonesty. The group as it turned out were Spanish highly educated, responsible people. 8 of them were youngsters. (20- 25yrs old) Their behaviour was exemplary. But what if it wasn't? What if they had been Mr & Mrs Drongo and their sproggs from England? It would have been a different story I promise you. You/we got lucky there.

Summary: We had a good trip - it should have been a great stay at Casa del Vidre. Our hosts must not try to be big buddies with the guests - they must be more professional - guests are not your friends, they are paying customers. By all means be friendly, but not to cover over the cracks. Our hosts work hard, believe me. If this project is to work for them, one of them must give up the day job and concentrate on Casa del Vidre. Alicia works in the hospital and her husband a firefighter. This leaves little time for the guests - they must be exhausted. It will be impossible to keep this up over time. Hope this review helps them rationalise!!!!!!!!! It is intended to! Thank you.
