Casa Arotzenea sits atop a mountain with a loverly terrace and garden. The host is friendly (though speaking hardly any English) and the rooms are very clean and cleaned every day! The place is a bit out of the way (6-7km from Hondarribia beach) and there is no public transport there so you need a car or taxi. Rooms are double but also quite small. We had asked for larger rooms but these were apparently already taken and what was a bit frustrating was that we paid the same fee as the larger rooms, so it is worthwhile making sure you get the larger rooms with balcony or terrace. For the Way of Saint James, the hotel is very well located as it is just a few hundred meters off the main path and therefore an excellent starting point. The host is friendly but does not go out of his way to help or help you find your way, which several hosts do and which is much appreciated if you are new. Seems to cater mostly to Spanish guests who obviously do not have this problem . Overall, good/very good but not excellent and not cheap.

A beautiful old refurbished farm house. The rooms are modern and have everything you need and more.
Breakfast is definitely recommended. Watching the sunrise and patting the ponies was a highlight of my trip.

It's a bit of a hike to get there but it's worth it.

Worth the effort to find it!

Thrilled to have stayed at a renovated old farmhouse. The quality of the renovation is very high and the deco pretty in every corner of the house. We only stayed for one night and the stay is especially enjoyable for us as we live in a busy and hectic city and the stay at the Basque countryside is just the cream on our cake. It is a quiet place with less than 10 rooms. The owner's daughter speaks English and she was very friendly and gave us a history of the renovated farmhouse. She even shared with us that she grew up in that same house. Definitely liked the personal touch since we are foreigners visiting the Basque region and its excellent to get a bit of the story from the locals who grew up there. The access to the property is on a narrow one lane country road, so just need to drive really carefully especially after going to the town for dinner and driving back to the farmhouse.

Cosy 600 year old farmhouse

This is a really pretty guest house with fabulous views from the terrace where there are tables and chairs.  Unfortunately our weather was not good enough to sit outside.  Our hosts made us really welcome, giving us a map of the town of Hondarribia and details of recommended places to eat.  Our room was spotlessly clean.  Breakfast was good - the usual continental croissant and bread roll but we asked for eggs one morning as we saw another guest had them.  We sometimes had to wait quite a while to be served breakfast while the lady of the house was busy in the kitchen but this was no problem unless, of course, you needed to be somewhere in a hurry.  The one drawback and it shouldn't detract from the overall experience is the location.  It is at the end of a twisting single track road and there are no bars or restaurants within a reasonable walking distance.  We had the windows open at night and there were dogs barking a lot and morning cockerel crows so no perfect night's sleep.  Wifi was very slow. The owner also dismissed the old town as a place to eat.  Certainly there is a much wider choice in the Fisherman's quarter but we spent a day in the old town and found a very nice bar with tapas and then had an excellent meal in a restaurant there.

Delightful but a little off the beaten track

We stayed there because we wanted to visit San Sebestian and yet be in a rural place.
The road leading to the stay is narrow but otherwise manageable. The room we got is small but good for two people with small luggage. 

My only complaint would be there is only 1 decent plug for charging your gadgets. Another one is high up near the ceiling and if you use it, your gadget hangs in the air( get the idea?).. 

Otherwise, the wifi connection was excellent and the hot water came on easily. We had good sleep everyday because of the quiet and with it being 30 minutes away from the great San Sebestian and 5 minutes away from charming Hondaribbu, we were satisfied. 

Extras: 
The walls between the rooms are thin. Our neighbour knocked on ours once when we got home at 12am and we're doing FaceTime with our children as a way to remind us that they could hear us and to keep our volume down. 

We chose not to eat breakfast because we wanted to sleep more so somehow whenever we left the house (always before 12pm), we never saw the host.  And hence we couldn't have a chance from our 3-night stay to get guidance on which nice villages to visit or restaurants to go to... 

Conclusion: 
Anyhow, for 48€ a night, this place has way surpassed its expectations.
