My wife and I stayed in Casa Las Portadas in La Oliva for two weeks in December 2016 and it turned out to be one of the most charming holidays we have had in 45 years together. The house is practically a living museum and what "modern" amenities there are e.g. cooker and shower, are fairly historic themselves. (n.b. there is good wifi) Why a 5* review then. Well, after the initial surprise at the historic nature of the place, we slept like logs in the dark and peace of the location, waking to explore the house, make breakfast and start the day on the terrace overlooking a field of cactus. Pedro, the owner, came around during the day and asked us if we needed anything and purchased us a new kettle. We conversed through Google Translate. The next two weeks were spent exploring the island by car and on foot, happy to return "home" each night. During our stay, Pedro showed us around the Museo De Los Tradiciones, which adjoins the house and his enthusiasm and love for the history of the place became infectious. It has to be the most peaceful holiday we have ever had and provided an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the local atmosphere. La Oliva itself seems to be very community oriented and has enough facilities to satisfy curiosity and practical needs. This includes a cafe making the best pizza I have tasted, a weekly produce market, a small supermarket, a library and various other bars and eateries.We plan to go back (in time?) ASAP and would recommend this house to anyone who is seeking a peaceful break and who is happy to keep it simple.

Step back to a simpler time

Where do I start. This is one of the places you will remember vividly in 10 years time. And I mean that in a positive way. We stayed in the main house, Casa Las Portadas in La Oliva, so this review is not about the other houses, I believe they're called Fimbapaire. 

This is an old (I believe 18th century) house, and it's been completely restored by the owner Pedro, who has lovingly equipped it with both modern equipment (bathroom, washing machine, refrigerator) but also with time-correct furniture. 

The welcome is warm; Pedro just speaks Spanish, but he's so friendly that it's remarkable easy to communicate either with bits of French, Italian or with the help of Google Translate.

The place oozes peace and quiet, and you will surely relax. There is a huge field full of cactuses next to the wonderful terrace (which is part of the house).

The kitchen is huge, utensils somewhat old, but who cares. Wifi is perfect, although because of the thick walls only works in the main room. 

During your visit, Pedro will invite you to see his "Museum of Traditions". What it is the rear part of the house restored into a minutely laid out reflection of what the house would have been like 200 years ago, including sleeping quarters, kitchen, farmhouse... It's been used in history films because it's so perfect. We're not museum-visitors perse, but the personal tour makes this a very special visit. 

All in all, if you're not the "all-inclusive" type, and you like some history, character and culture. Go here, you won't regret it.

We had just one thing to moan: the mattresses for the beds were very old and hard to lie on. This may turn someone with a bad back away. But please don't let that deter you.

Unique gem in the heart of Fuerteventura

Fimbapaire is a beautful Casa Rural in the countryside outside the attractive small town of La Oliva.  It is quite isolated, and has fantastic views of the plain and mountains. Just perfect for our needs - very simple and traditional.  The very best part of our stay was Pedro's generous, warm and friendly care of us. The walking, which is why we were there, was good, you need a car to get around, although there are plenty of buses to the villages and towns.  Fuerteventura was an eyeopener for those who think it is just a package tour destination.  It is a very sparse and desertlike place, but with wonderful hidden corners to explore and lots of interest, and plenty of extinct volcanoes to get to the top of. Silence and peace rule in the majority of the island. I would thoroughly recommend Fimbapaire - it was a magical place. The bar in La Oliva,  makes very good inexpensive meals, no frills, but baby squid on the menu, and lots of authentic village life to observe.  Also several good retaurants nearby.

An outstanding casa rural

This is a lovely old building, nicely restored, in a central part to the. North of the island. The owner is very friendly. However we were very disappointed at the very poor quality of
A - bedding...there were holes in the bed covers, bed sheets almost transparent with age, ancient bobbled up blankets
B- lighting, very very dark and dim, the owner hadn't bothered to check light bulbs were working, it was dark and dismal at night and quite hard to read
C- pans were ancient, no kettle , pan we found had handle which was extremely hot when put on gas ring to heat up water
D- no heating.
Other reviews have mentioned this e.g. In guest book in house and on booking.com.
Owner has done nothing to address these issues. a shame, if he spent £200 it would be so much more comfortable.
