This hotel is quiet, clean but a bit basic. Staff are friendly. 

This is located on the sixth floor.  It's really easy to find, just go from main street and go up in the lift.  After 10 pm the night watchmen let's you in.  

The bed was comfy, only 4 stars as no kettle in the room so a bit too basic for the money we paid.  

I'd stay again.  

Quick break 

STAY AWAY FROM this hotel, it lacks any standards of credibility or good customer service. They canceled our reservation on the last day before our arrival without any reason. We sent them several emails and called the hotel multiple times. When we finally managed to speak to the hotel owner, he claimed there were no available rooms for us. When we asked why they hadn't closed availability, causing us significant harm as prices had risen in other hotels due to late booking, his response was shocking: 'Don't come to Spain if you don't have money.' We were stunned to hear that from a hotel owner

STAY AWAY TO NOT DESTROY YOUR VACATION

The location couldn't be better! On the main street of the city, with all the main attractions, monuments and shops within walking distance, and next to a metro station. Mariela and Carlos were sweet the whole time, super attentive and helpful, they gave us lots of tips on places and getting around, always making us feel at home. The place is super simple, but super clean and comfortable. Perfect for those who spend the whole day on the street walking and only come back to shower and sleep. But the walls are paper thin so if you are lucky enough to have polite guests who know how to speak in a low tone after/before certain times and who don't "break down" the door when entering and exiting their respective rooms the night will be great. The shower water has great pressure, but the fact that the shower only has a curtain instead of glass or acrylic can lead to some incidents such as wetting the entire bathroom.

Good cost-benefit

Small room but with small double bed (for one person), table, chair, wardrobe, TV, shower room with toilet (shower was over a half-bath). Free wifi. Very, very clean. No food, but many eatieries and international chains very nearby. Excellent location within walking distance of many attractions. Hop-on, Hop-off bus stop just across the road (Route 1). About 15 mins walk from the Prado Gallery/ El Retiro Park and in the opposite direction, the Royal Palace/Plaza de Espana. Also about 15 mins walk from the Mercado de San Miguel eating place. If you want a good value place to sleep while exploring the city, while not needing expensive hotel facilities, I highly recommend this hostal. Helpful staff. Bed was comfortable, seemed to be a memory foam mattress, but I didn't check. I had a room overlooking a small quadrangle (#22) so no noise from busy street.

Location is really good and room was spacious.

Staff don't speak much English - depends who is there (wasn't a problem for us) Odd siutation in the evening to ring bell outside then be escorted (ini lift) and let into the hostal

Great location, average place but fine for the price

Location of this hostal is perfect - on Gran Via, near to the metro station (Gran Via), so you can reach  everything easily. 
Small rooms, but with private bathroom and very very clean and neat. Excellent value for the price asked. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful, although some of them did not speak any English. The room was cleaned every day and they even made our beds.  
The building gets locked after 11PM, but there is a night guard who will let you in and give you your key.
No breakfast offered.
Free WiFi.

Stayed for four nights Monday to Friday ..
Very central on the Grande Via ..
Hostal is on the 6th floor at the top of a large quite grand building ..
Staff are friendly and very helpfull , however some do not speak any English and i dont speak Spanish , so as long as you dont mind it shouldnt be any problem ..
Rooms are basic , but are spotlessly clean and freshly decorated ..
Very quiet during both the day and night ..

Great Value

Hostal La Selecta is one of the numerous mini-hotels located in one porch of the big building located in the Gran Via in the very center of Madrid. Each floor of six  is divided to two-three mini-hotels. I can say nothing about others, but in La Selecta you are meeting with warm attitude. 

No breakfast, small rooms (but for this price is OK)
