We enjoyed our breakfast and lunch then a few beers watching the sunset. The place has a lovely atmosphere and although we don’t surf thoroughly enjoyed those who were. The breakfast was great my husband asked if he could have poached eggs and they came perfect. Later I had prawns and avocado salad which came beautifully dressed and the young waiter explained that prices have increased since Covid so portion sizes were reduced but I found it to be totally sufficient. I would recommend this place for a total chill out place with a great evening ambience

Very chilled

You can catch a wave within about 3 mins from leaving your room here - and that's including a minute waiting for the next set!
Tourism is seriously down here from normal non-covid times, but you wouldn't know it in this place! 
You'll still find a table here but most are full, most if the day.
Why? Well, it's well-named, right on sand in front of the main breaks, but then so are a few places,but this one is really doing things right!
Ice cold beer, always served in bottles with koozies on, into glasses from the freezer, right onto the 'sliced tree, log-legs' tables, with fantastically tasty food at really great prices - everything from gorgeous bacon and cheese toasties to fresh lobster!
The rooms are super-clean, freshly decorated with good, fast cooling AC, comfy beds, top-notch hot or cold shower and just seconds from the sand and world-class waves.
My only complaint? The owner, Ruhan, works too hard! He's always scanni g the tables, making sure nobody's left hanging without a cold beer or a delicious menu to choose from!
He even managed to have a quiet word in Santa's ear and get him to swing by on Christmas day for the couple of kiddies that were getting their first taste of this surfer / beach bum paradise - I'd be shocked if these little dudes didn't grow up and bring their own families here!
Cracking hotel, top bar, beautiful palm-thatched sun-shade canopies on sand, great, varied chill music, super-heloful friendly staff... What more could you ask for!!

Hands down, best surf chillout bar / hotel on the sand right in front of the main breaks!

After checking out some restaurants, we have become kinda regulars at the Main Reef during our Hikka stay. Great fresh food for friendly prices, nice service, pleasant music in the evening and beautiful ocean views.

Best place to eat well and relax at the beach in Hikka

We just loved it here!! The place, the staff, everything was lovely.
We had the room facing the ocean and waking up looking at the ocean..BEAUTIFUL!
The rooms are clean and spacious. Breakfast is tasty and have plenty to eat.
The owner is such a friendly guy and everyone in the staff were polite and friendly. We felt like home.
The food in the restaurant is very good. We had dinner pretty much every night. 
Location is very good, local stores and supermarket are very close.
Such a lovely place to stay. Really enjoyed our staying here. We recommend this place to everyone.

Such a lovely place!

Rooms were so clean and staff are helpful, the food is very tasty and good. you can reach this place from Colombo by bus and train as well, it’s a few minutes away from Hikkaduwa train station and bus station too.
We stayed for two nights and spent a nice time here.
Here, you can rent a surfing board for 400 LKR and enjoy surfing.

Note: Someone has to tell the restaurant next door on the beach to stop playing music and HipHop songs, the sound of the ocean is enough to enjoy 

 

We loved it 

We have just returned from 2 weeks at Main Reef Guest House, we had Room 1 top floor overlooking the beach. The room was basic and clean. Breakfast was lovely yoghurt, fruit juce, fresh fruit, pancakes, eggs and toast, tea or coffee served most mornings by a lovely lady Mani.

The owner and all the staff we met were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We also ate there most evenings, we did try a couple of other places but to be honest the food was nicer and cheaper at Main Reef. The owner also arranged a driver to take us on a couple of trips, he was a very careful driver we felt very safe with him on the chaotic roads and he explained things to us, stopping at places which he thought may interest us.
The owner even gave us a gift before we left.

Lovely stay

A smaller joint than others, main reef hotel has a chilled relaxed atmosphere and despite being full, did not feel crowded at all. Breakfast was flexible timing wise and filling (big fruit plate, yoghurt, eggs, coconut roll, tea/coffee). Dinner was great - we had crabs two nights in a row. We booked a table and ordered in the late afternoon to get a nice table on the beach and prompt food. Mr Ruwan the owner, the ladies and boys who worked there were helpful and friendly. Surf wise, you can see main reef break from the front of the hotel to the left.

Chilled and great food

We stayd at main reef hotel for 5 days. The rom was big and nice, IT was muscito net over the bed, breakfast was good:) But what we enjoyd most was the staff, so friendly and kind! 
The restaurant they have is also god. I am always a bit skeptic to seafood when i travel, but at this plase IT was frech and super god!

Fantastic hotel and staff

I have stayed in Sri Lanka before on a solo visit.This visit was with my 2 teenagers. Location, quality of accomodation and food is superb and the owner can and will arrange anything for you to make your visit to the Island as easy as possible. Totally genuine friendly people with surfing on the doorstep. Big plus ACDC will be played at night if you ask nicely! Cannot recommend highly enough.
