I booked at Villa Tissa based on Lonely Planet's guide recommandation.
We were quite disappointed. Although nothing was very bad, the price paid was not in relation with what was offered : large room, but not very nice, bathroom with the toilets near the shower, regular electricity shut-down every evening (maybe not their fault), poor restaurant regarding the food (the waiters were nice). The location is quiet but not so nice, and to be noted that it is difficult to swim from that beach (due to current, but mainly stones just when you enter water).
If you have made a prepayment, make sure to have your voucher with you : I had paid 50% in advance, and the balance came out being an additional 75% ! After arguing, I finally had to pay only the remaining 50%, but with an additional charge of 3% because I paid with a credit card, which was not mentioned when I booked.

Disappointed !

The rooms are nice. Bathroom good. We had a nice sea view too. The pool and grounds in front of the sea and beach are very nice. Quiet and easy access to the beach and nearby surf spot (plantations). Restaurant is not great. Breakfast not great (we started eating out for breakfast). Rerairant service was shocking. The waiter actually deliberately ignored us so we had to leave to get a meal elsewhere. When we confronted him about it the next day he said he couldn't serve us cos he had 4 other tables. Shocking.

The location of the property is perfect, set on a nice quiet beach just outside Weligama with beautiful views. Be warned that the sea is quite dangerous in this area with a lot of hidden coral and strong currents, only safe for strong swimmers.
We were lucky enough to see turtles laying eggs on the beach on a couple of nights which was awesome.
There is so much wildlife around the hotel as well that we spent ages sat on the balcony just watching all the birds and other animals in the area.
The pool area was nice with the sun loungers, pool towels supplied and plenty of shade and the pool was a nice god send to help cool down in the heat

We were deeply disappointed with this hotel. There were a high number of problems which damaged our stay here.
The room (no 7) is in severe need of renovation - there has obviously been a young child in this room who has scribbles all over the walls in bro - not a very nice thing to see when you enter a room. Additionally the general cleanliness was extremely poor - there were stains all over the walls (lower) which remained there during our stay, there was dust and dirt around the edges of the floor which was not cleaned once during our stay. Our first impressions of the cleanliness were poor and it got worse from that point onwards. Towels smelt musty and old, although we could see them being 'washed' and dried they never seemed to be very clean.
The room was not cleaned on 2 days during our stay, even though we were out of the room for the entire days and had left the sign on the door asking for the room to be cleaned. 
They do not provide water in your room - you will get 2 complimentary bottles of water when you check in and the rest you need to BUY from the hotel bar at a highly marked u price (you are better going to one of the local shops for your water) - this is very poor and it was clearly stated on booking.com that water was supplied, as I would expect in any hotel in a climate like Sri Lanka's.
Our Air conditioning failed on the 2nd day of our stay. This was never fixed (temperatures were exceeding 30 degrees). We were not offered alternative accommodation even though we paid for a room with air conditioning.
We also asked for a bag of laundry to be cleaned by the hotel. after 2 days this still had not been done, on the morning of check out I was handed back my laundry which was still soaking wet which I then had to pack and have rewashed at our next hotel.
The food was of a really poor standard.
I wouldn't stay here again, there are much better hotels nearby.
The TV seemed to lose Channels during our stay (all English speaking channels) with an error message appearing to advise that the bill had not been paid - we never got the channels back

Beautiful Location, poorly run hotel

When we complained about our room the staff became very unfriendly and we ended up leaving the hotel before the first night. So I do not recommend this place.
There are many nice guesthouses in this area.

Bad bad bad

Popped in for happy hour on Christmas Day. There was only 1 table of people in the garden/restaurant. Asked if we could use pool that had nobody in it, were told 2000 rupees per person. Order cocktails from the happy hour menu choice of 5. Came back with only 2 available. This place never seemed to have anyone there I wonder why!
