I didn't plan to stay at the Berg House, I spent 9 hours of continuous driving, from Ella to Arugam Bay (on the east coast) then immediately to Unawatuna (on the west coast) arrived at night. The Berg House was the only stay in the region that was open. I planned to stay only a few days. But then I met the family. They turned out to be wonderful people that I am proud to say became my friends. The food was great. I was delighted to hear stories about Srilanka, Buddhism, and the life there. I ate the best food in the country. If I come again, will definitely stay there again :)

Come for the food, make life-long friends

I came to eat in a wonderful family.
Impressed with a sincere love for visitors, openness and quality of service.  Really very low prices for such a good service and delicious food.  The food is not spicy, oriented to Europeans.  You can order anything you like, at least dumplings, at least Russian borsch.  There is a harmony in the house, which is reflected in everything.

The most delicious food with love

this is a very belated review, last year we accidentally came across this place to eat, it took me so long to find the name in an old picture. But honestly the best food I had and absolutely lovely lovely mother and daughter made us home cooked food. She later told us they hadn’t even opened yet but she still warmly invited us in anyway and made us so much beautiful food. A true show of the Sri Lankan spirit and the food itself was incredible. The best meal I had whilst being there. Proper good homey food, thank you so much! even now it’s still a moment that I’ve carried with me 

best food on my travels 

I am in favour of remote locations, for quietness ans authenticity. This is a place that achieved these criteria. Nice hosts, good English, ready to help in a professional manner. I quite liked to walk to the beach some 3-4 km.

The house looks big and well equiped. I opted for the budget room, located in a different building than the house. The price was the classic 10 USD / night. All my other 10 $/night in Sri Lanka were better, hence my comments refletc my expectations for a 10 USD room, based on my experience for 3 weeks in Sri Lanka. Bathroom outdated in need for refurbishment and cleaning. Also the mosquito net has a design which is not effective - the hanging one does not offer good isolation on the " entry side" vs. the one on a solid squared frame.  I would not book again this room, however because of the quality of hosts I would probably give them a chance for a non-budget room.

Think twice about the budget room ( my overal rating is for the budget room)

We just happened to come across the berg house and the woman and her daughter were the sweetest people I’ve ever met. They were so hospitable and after living in Sri Lanka for 3 weeks, this was some of the best food I’ve had here. I’d highly recommend going to this place. It feels like a great home cooked meal and not just another restaurant. Go if you can!! She also has cooking classes she teaches and her son runs another location in miriassa

Best food I’ve had in Sri Lanka!!

I got a better room for the same price Nice family, very careful mother, let me use a boiler (her husband said it's not included in rate for booked room), quickly cooked for me a good lunch, husband picked me up by motobike to good road to jungle beach and drove me to tea factory and then to Mirissa, booked for me a whale trip and morning tuktuk in Mirissa
Near to train station, but a little bit far to main road / bus stop (5-7 min) and too far to beach - 20-25 min walk, but you could take a local bus for 20 rupees (2 stop).
Low or no signal WiFi in the room, quiet on the terrace 
Be careful - very slipery floor in the bathroom
For me it's OK, but you should be ready to share your room with ants, lizards, beetles

I have booked a budget room, since existing guests extended the stay they provided me a triple occupancy room.

You can have breakfast in the garden overlooking monkeys  (they never harm you or steal food from you)

From the time we entered the place, it really felt like your own home. They offered us a full lesson on how to prepare a Srilankan rice and curry. The very special part of this session was the vegetable brought directly from their own garden. By the time we left the home, we were one among their family. They have shared everything with us - about their history, their family background, SriLankan customs, we even know the languages spoken by their grand kinds...we were much attached and felt really comfortable in staying in their house. They were so kind and accommodated all of our request (including driving 20kms for my own personal needs). Thanks a lot for everything you have made for us.

It was really a Berg Home for us and I strongly recommend this place, in Unawatuna.

The real srilankan home stay - really a home. 

We had a lovely room and our host was very helpful, drove us wherever we needed and provided us with great local information. Organized us lovely meals and we had a great time chatting over dinner. Highly recommend this place, lovely people!
