The Fårsunds fästning is an excellent option if you wish to visit the north of Gotland (Fårö) and at the same time get a piece of interesting Swedish history. The rooms are all in heavy concrete (and really cool) but at the same time cosy and offer all you need in terms of comfort and equipment.  The resto offers tasty lamb from the region and the breakfast offers a variety goodies (although the berries were a bit too cold). Well worth a visit!

Excellent hotel w a historical touch

Converted from an old military fortress into a hotel this is a very cool place. They have kept some of the old unique walls which is great. The restaurant is fantastic. We had Moules et frites and local lamb sausages, both were outstanding. Breakfast is included and very fresh. Sauna and pool nice but could've been cleaned better.
The window is towards the hallway and hotel and not to the outside. Blinds were not good and windows single glazed so it was both noisy in the room and not completely darker out. Could even see in/out in some spots. 
Dehumidifier in bathroom could be turned off but the ventilation in the bathroom could not be and it was very noisy. Beds too soft.  Another strange thing is that they lock the place up between 11am and 3pm so you cannot evwn get in to use the toilet while you wait for your room. 
Staff friendly and helpful. WIFI very good which was needed as phone reception patchy 

Converted from a military fortress

I had on purpose asked for a room within the old stone wall but had not realized this meant it had no window to the outside nor that a very noisy humidifier had to be on 24/7.  The door and side partitions into the room were glass (the rest stone wall)  and even when pulling all the shades I could see out into the corridor from the bed, which logically meant there was the same visibility in. The location is very nice at it was relaxing to take an evening stroll along the shore. Due to the end of season a set menu was served for dinner and it was very tasty and clearly made with a lot of attention. The breakfast was very yummy and it was a great start to the day to sit out on their nice deck and sip a cup of coffee. Staff were very nice and helpful throughout.

Review should say good, location very nice but room in old wall not for me

We loved our stay at this small (only 16 rooms) boutique hotel located in an old military fort. The design of the buildings and furniture is contemporary Gotland style. The service in the restaurant had been reduced due to the corona situation, but we had both good breakfasts and dinners there.

Staff were extremely friendly and helpful and made you feel at home and welcome.

The place is still iconic, but would have been even more spectacular a few years back. Upkeep of the buildings and plants is not quite top notch, but it is probably one of the best hotels on the island nevertheless. 

Great paths along the coast for running.

Unique hotel

Fantastic hotel - wonderful helpful staff. 

Room was very modern and well equipped with high quality furnishings. Hotel is calm, has a lovely pool and sauna area and the food (especially breakfast) was tasty!

It is an old 19th century fortress so it's also steeped in history. They have free bike hire and the owners were so helpful and even drove us back and forth to the bus stop :) 

Would love to come back again one day! Thanks for a lovely stay :)

Unique!

Staying in a converted coastal fort is quite cool and makes for a slightly different experience. Upon checking in I was shown an old picture of the fortress and had the location of my room indicated -- an old storage space for shells and such. My room was, however, not very comfortable: there were noe external windows, so the only natural light came through the transparent wall-with-a-door leading out onto the corridor. As I had no particular desire to be visible to all and sundry walking past in the corridor, I turned down the shades, with the room getting quite dark as a consequence. It felt a bit like living in a cage. The dinners were very good, and it's nice to go walking along the coastal paths outside.

Something different

This hotel is unlike anything we’ve ever seen: an actual fortress originally made for military purposes. Today it’s been remodeled into a boutique hotel with comfortable rooms and a top class restaurant (you must have the sauce béarnaise!). Great breakfasts with freshly baked bread.
The hotel is somewhat isolated in the middle of a beautiful landscape, just beside the sea. There are plenty of nice walks across the peninsula and bicycles are provided free of charge. Don’t forget a trip to Fårö with the ferry during your stay.
The staff was rally nice and gave us plenty of advice on what to do and where to go.

A fantastic experience 

My wife, son and I took advantage of Volvo European Delivery (V60) two summers ago. Sweden, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Denmark, Sweden. My wife had to fly back to the states early for work. We dropped her off in Stockholm to fly home and son and I hit Gotland with absolutely no plans in mind. We went North from Visby to see the "rauks" and we were running out of daylight with not a hotel in sight. Maybe something in Farasund. Full. Stumbled on the entrance to this hotel by seeing a very small sign. Drove over the cattle grid. This doesn't bode well. No choice. If there's room, there shall we be. 

It was by far the best hotel surprise of my life.  The kitchen was closed and we just drove to the grocery and picked up some bread, cheese and salami and we ate in one of the alcoves which had a public space TV.  We watched an unbelievably stupid guys movie (Benchwarmers) and this PhD laughed his head off with his son. 

I got up around 4:00 AM because I couldn't sleep (besides is was already light), way before breakfast started and the woman in charge of breakfast brewed me some coffee and brought me out a little plate with cheese and some fruit. 

And we had a chat. We had no idea what to do in Gotland for the next two days and she told us exactly what to do. And she was right.

Gotta be one of the best 48 hours of my life.  Just go!

The best hotel surprise of my life

Sure wish that the customer base was bigger, a pity that FF  only stays open a few summer months.I think it would be magical with a autumn or winter evening on barren Fårösund. FF with its unique history, architecture.A hotel like this would be fully booked around the clock in a city.They gastronomic excesses have subsided, but perhaps they will return.
