We stayed here for two nights while exploring the area and absolutely loved our time at the Göta Hotell!  It's a historic hotel, perfectly situated on the Göta Canal right at the Borensberg locks, so you can watch the boats navigate the hand operated locks.  Just steps away from the canal and bike path and an easy walk into town.  The hotel has done a great job of maintaining the rich history without sacrificing any modern comforts.  Daniel was so welcoming and helpful, making sure we had everything we needed.  We had a relaxing time and would go out of our way just to stay here again.

A highlight of our trip to Sweden

If you’re especially keen to experience a disastrous evening - maybe as part of an anger management therapy - I strongly recommend a visit to the restaurant at Göta Hotel. What an absolutely catastrophic evening. In all fairness my expectations were slightly higher than normal since the management is new.
We were off to a fairly good start with an attentive waitress (no. 1) wanting to show us to our table before we had even gotten rid of our drenched rain gear and umbrellas.
Waitress no. 1 showed us to our table ( which we had pre-booked the previous day), handed us the menus and took our drink orders immediately. The drinks arrived promptly.
We had only just had our drink sips and started looking at the menu when waitress no. 2 appeared with three guests in tow asking us if we could change not only table but room as her guests were brining a dog and dogs normally went into the room in which we had been seated. We were absolutely astonished; why on earth had we been seated in the ‘dog room’ in the first place…!? Incredible!!! We apparently communicated our astonishment fairly well since the ‘dog guests’ immediately retreated - together with waitress no. 2 - indicating that they might be able to solve the dog issue anyway. Seriously: is an already seated AND partly served guest expected to change table - let alone room - for a dog!!!??? What on earth is going on?! By now I was (I’m sorry to say) slightly fuming…
Imagine our surprise when said waitress (no. 2) pass by our table a couple of minutes later happily informing us that they had solved the ‘dog issue’. What the hell do I care - why bother us as paying guests about the dog issue in the first place!!!???
We ordered one starter to share. The starter were served by waitress no. 2 on its plate and were put on the table between us. What on earth was going through this girls’ mind is beyond me but finally we had to specifically ASK her for two separate plates so that we could share…!?
We were not offered any water or salt & pepper so I had to leave our table and go to the hotel reception to ask for it.
No one took away our starter plates.
Our mains arrived cold and (obviously) without cutlery as those (subsequently) went out with the starter plates.
The one dessert we ordered (cheese) took forever to be served.
When the check arrived waitress no. 2 had the nerve to as if we were content… I'm terribly sorry but what a downright insult!!! No tips, a really bad Tripadvisor review and an easy promise not to ever set foot in the restaurant of Göta Hotel again probably answers that question better than anything.

A disastrous evening

Because this hotel is emblematic to Göta Kanal, you could expect this place to be a tourist trap. It is exactly the opposite. Inspired and refined decoration. Attentionate and exceptionnally friendly service. Authentic swedish food. Swedish hospitality at its best.

A real gem

This is a truly beautiful hotel. Very cosy and welcoming. The food and drinks available are amazing and the staff are helpful and friendly. Would definitely recommend a stay at this hotel. It’s a very popular place so booking is essential for the restaurant.

Best in Sweden

We only had lunch at this nice and quiet hotel by Göta Kanal. Amazing lunch with great view of the canal. A couple of choices for lunch.  Vegetarian option was a hit. A bit pricy but on the other hand food was so good.

ONLY ATE AT THE RESTAURANT!

Great restaurant beautifully located by the Göta Kanal. Was surprised with the quality of the food. The only bad thing is that it's abit pricey. All main-courses cost 290 SEK which is a bit steep even with Stockholm standards.

One of the best restaurants in Östergötland - but abit pricey

A very nice and clean hotel in an old charming building. The food is fantastic. We had a meny - Götas meny - and it was great. The staff made a good presentation and it tasted really good.
The environment -- near to Gota canal - is nice to walk in.

Nice place

This is a very nice hotel in South/Middel Sweden. It is situated by the Göta Canal connecting the Baltic Sea and the lakes Vättern and Vänern. There are boates from all Europe in the locks of the Canal. 
The hotel is very picturesque and therefore used for weddings and other celebrations. Summertime you can have an excellent dinner served outdoor at the hotel terrace. The dinner we had was very tasty and we all enjoyed every dish very much. As first course we had salmon with a lot of accessories. The main course was beef calf raised in the region and the desert was a composition with Swedish strawberries. Delicious!
