Our family of 4 stayed in the Rasta on 2 occasions - fortunately only for one night each time - and we had two different experiences. While the first stay was in a small worn-down, dirty room with a cold shower to start your day, the other stay (both were prebooked) we got 2 connected rooms of a much higher standard - obviously renovated. I believe most guests use the hotel as a stop-over on their way somewhere (we did), and a good thing about the place is that there is absolutely nothing keeping you there in the morning as the breakfast is mediocre at best and you check out by leaving your room key in a bucket.

2 different experiences

This hotel is a no-frills stop-over on the way to towns in the area.  Mariestad, itself, does not offer many choices, so it likely is a convenient point from where one can go to Sjotorp, and/or surrounding towns.  The lobby is filled with candy bins, so if you have a sweet tooth, this is the place to go.  Rooms are adequate, but not equipped - no hair dryer, etc.  Again, for one night or two, it could well suffice as one progresses to tour the Varmsland and Dalarna areas of Sweden.

A Roadside Stopping Point

This Hotel was awful. We have stayed in some rough places in our time around the world but this bets them all. Infact we could'nt let our son stay in this filth and he brokedown crying and saying he would prefer to sleep in the car. This is not a disgruntled guest as after checking in and seeing the state of the room (offered two and neither any better than the other) we walked out. The rooms we were shown were nothing like the pictures on the booking page. We had excrement on the duvet (son's bed), Bodily fluids and stains with a smell of urine on the main bed duvet, urine in the toilet that was old and the room smelt awful. Dust in layers and generally run down, and one room offered was a renovated room. Again see pictures. The lady who was left in charge while the management were off, just cried when she was shown the state of the rooms and sheets. We felt for her as she was clearly very embarressed and clearly not able to handle the situation. She did call the manager and my wife spoke to her in Swedish -  she was totally useless and blamed us for making a fuss. Told my wife that the pictures do not reflect all the rooms as shown on the website and complained we had upset her staff. This was untrue and when we advised the duty manager had broken down when shown the room she just continued to be rude and aggressive. She was difficault, obstructive, in denial of the standards this hotel offers. We advised that it should be the cleaners job to inform management of sheets and pillows and general filth like these rooms and that human waste should be burnt not covered up. This was a health hazzard and we would not let our son stay in such a place. If this is the standard of the rooms, imagine what it is like behind closed doors and in the kitchen area! 

We should get a letter of appologie but this has not been forthcoming. Shocking and a disgrace and if you are travelling with children be aware. Never again and should be closed down.

We should be compensated for the awful treatments, disgraceful miss- discription on the website and inconvenience caused during our trip. However, we were told by the manager to look again at the website to see the state of the rooms as we were wrong and the hotel does look as it does on the website. We did have another look and couldnt find one picture of excrement, bodily fluids, urine, dust and general filth that the Rasta Mariestad. We did not find one picture of staff crying at the state of the place and embarrassment, or one staff member taking full responsibility. Someone should close this place down, do a proper check and burn human waste on sheets and pillows, clean and update all rooms and relaunch. 

I am sure they will respond with some cover up story, blame us and its guests but management is management and they are paid to take responsibility and sort out this place. The cleaners should no better and also take responsibility. Its a health hassard. Our experience was true and pictures taken.
