We (a couple) stayed at "STF Storliens" (which, most importantly, is not in Storlien at all, but in Storvallen) for five nights. We stayed here to go cross country skiing. This was one of ten hotels and hostels we stayed at on a three week trip in Scandinavia, and it's the only one that was not good. This place is actually a bit of a tragedy. It could be nice, it could be a friendly little refuge with cute rooms and a warm atmosphere (although the skiing would still be poor). As it is, it's not good at all. 

It's hard to know where to begin with the problems. It felt like we had walked into a scene from a Scandinavian version of Fawlety Towers, or perhaps the set from a Yorgos Lanthimos film. If you like places where cracked windows are repaired with cardboard, where toilets lock you in, where paint is peeling off the walls, where the curtains have holes, where the kitchens are pokey (and tea towels appear only sometimes), where the owner (Tina) claims she has summer tires on her car (in the middle of winter) and so is immobile (although she somehow manages to get around in any case, when she wants to), where the luxury of sheets and a towel cost you (a lot) extra (about the same as our rental of skis, boots and poles for a day), where the shower room door does not lock and the water takes about three minutes (running) to get warm, where the staff have to follow nutty rules and almost giggle when talking about the owner ... well, if you like these sorts of things then this place is for you! For very similar prices there are much, much nicer places nearby (e.g. in Enafors). Even the mid-range hotels (not hostels) we stayed at in Stockholm, Trondheim and Bergen were not much more expensive - and to say they were nicer would be quite the understatement. 

Final note, unless you have a car DO NOT stay here in winter. It is an hour's walk along a major, dangerous road into Storlien from Storvallen. The buses only run if booked with over a day's notice, and even then they only run once a day at useless/weird times (e.g. 5:30am). The owner of the hostel, as previously noted, is immobile in winter and extremely resistant to pleas for help from guests, no matter what the circumstances. There are some cars posing as taxis, but these need to be booked with a week or two's notice to be sure of getting one (a local advised us). If you do manage to book a "taxi" you will wish you had not. They demand between €37 and €42 for the four minute drive one-way to Storlien. It's extortion, and the locals know this (try asking one about the cost of the "taxis" and see what reaction you get). The horse-drawn sleighs in St Moritz are probably not so much more expensive than these guys, and Storvallen is definitely no St Moritz. 

As for the cross-country skiing - it's mediocre. Limited trails and scenery, lots of snow mobiles roaring around.

Overall: avoid.

Sad place, with some potential (if it was well run)

We stayed at this hostel for one night. The buliding was old and classy. It had it's own style. The staff and people that stayed here were very friendly and helpful. It was also very quiet. We had a room with a view of the forrest. The room was airy and had alot of light. Very cozy we thought it was. There was also a little bar where we in the hostel could hang out. We felt right at home. Coming and going as pleased and while basically following house rules. REALLY nice. We will be back. :) Thank you!

Fantastic and pleasant hostel!

This rather old place, built back in  the forties as a vacation hostel for non drinking employees at the swedish railroad company is still in quite a good shape with caring staff. I actually visited the place for the first time 1953 but do not remember much since I was just a baby. The location is perfect for skiing crosscountry up to the Blåhammaren and from there reaching the Famous Jamtlands triangle with Sylarna, Gåsen and Storulvån within a couple of hours of skiing or walking if in summer time. Also the Storeriksvollen in Norway is close. if you prefer downhill it´s just 3 km from Storlien where you can find kids friendly sloops. If you prefer snowmobile to reach the mountains this is also a place were to stay. The traffic can be quite heavy due to many many many norwegians invading our mountains with their snowmobiles due to the fact that snowmobiles are almost forbidden on the other side of the border....
Anyway the place is located in the middle of all this and with just 70 km you can reach Trondheim in Norway just to get some fresh Shrimps or visit the Nidaros dome.
Rooms are simple and small with toilet and a sink, Beds are so and so with some old pillows and covers. Showers in the corridor (its a hostel) Linen for rent and if you dont want to clean up after yourself when leaving you can buy the service. The price is therefore very reasonable, just 30-40 Euro per night including a limited buffe breakfast. Oatporridge great though! But its neat and clean and the staff very kind and friendly. A small shop to buy necessary things for the trails. The restaurant food is ok but nothing special really. Our Cesars sallad was good but the burger was the absolute worst I ever saw. Stay away from that one!! One evening there were a tex mex foodnite with a lot of guests shouting and screaming loudly so sleeping was not possible until after 2 o´clock in the night. Booooring!! Wifi existed but low rate on speed....
Anyway all in all, its a good place and located perfectly so If going back to this village I will  definitely stay there again

Good hostel close to beautiful mountains

This hostel is perfectly situated for hiking (we've been here several times both during winter and summer) either as the first or last leg of a trip to the Jamtland triangle or for day-touring. Walking or skiing from Storlien railway station is easy, several marked tracks are available. Can also be reached by car. You need not walk or ski long to experience the breath-taking views of the area. Rooms are standard, clean and quiet. The buffet restaurant, the pub, and the sauna all live up to expectations. The staff is service-minded and welcoming.
