Myself and my sisters stayed in the annex. It is a lovely large space that used to be the laundry of the prison. Everything was super clean, the beds where comfortable with high quality linen and the kitchenette was well equipped. If I get the opportunity to stay next time I’m in the area I most definitely will!

Fabulous stay!

This hostel was actually a real historical prison located 10min walk from Umeå city center with a room dedicated to the history of the prison.

We normally avoid hostel due to shared toilet. But the annex has own toilet and kitchen with cleaning and breakfast included in the price, plus it is a own building in the courtyard so it feels so secluded in a historical environment. As a bonus the price is much lower than hotel with similar family room. 

High celing, 2 bedrooms with 6 beds suited us perfectly. The annex is accessible as well. The rooms is very clean.

Super friendly hosts, would definitely stay here next time we are in Umeå.

I stayed in one of the prison rooms, which was a cool experience. The rooms are very small but comfortable. The building is well renovated and the ownership couple were very friendly. Breakfast was included and was well provided for. The couple who own the hotel were very friendly and helpful with assistance and allowed me to use the shower facilities after checking out. Easy to find and well located for access to both the city and the airport

Cool Experience

We booked the appartment annexet and were really positively surprised. Very big, clean and nice rooms with up to 6 beds, an entire house by our selves with toilet and bath and also small kitchen, up to 6 beds and two separte big rooms with doors between if needed. Really great and serviceminded service in the reception, we really felt welcome, breakfast was good. A lot of parkingspace was a big +. We will absolutely stay here again!

Annexet at Hotel gamla fängelset

The former prison cells turned into rooms seemed a bit claustrophobic in the beginning but luckily because of my schedule I didn't need to spend too much time indoors. But the whole ambiance keeps you reminding of its past, not in a spooky way though. Shared bathroom and toilets were a turn off. However, the breakfast is good and the staffs were really hospitable and friendly. City center is at walking distance. One room museum giving you prison's historical information is quite interesting Overall experience was great.

Unique experience

An old jail turned into a hotel, and very beautiful. The rooms are small, we stayed two persons in one room.
Breakfast is great. Bathroom and toilets fine. Close to center. Parking in the yard.

In comparison “Gamla fängelset” is a small scale hotel in a historical building that used to be a prison, managed by very dedicated and service orientated owners. The rooms, beds, breakfast are great values for the price. The rooms are clean and quite, the location is great. The hotel with the history as a prison is for real, it doesn’t need any made up theme – it is authentic. 
Highly recommended!

Note! One has to understand that the rooms are former cells, and that toilets and showers are located outside.

A very price worthy hotel !

Had a great stay here, walking distance to town, very clean, staff very helpful. Slept really well and don't be put off by shared bathroom facilities, they are immaculate. Very much enjoyed it and would love to return.

Great Place To Stay.

If you’re coming from Finland by boat from Vaasa, Umea is your first experience of Sweden.  Try to keep going if you can, the town is lugubrious with nothing of interest.  For fun, like others, you can play find the ATM.  Hint:  It’s not in the bank.  The easiest one to find is near the entrance of the bus station.  If you need to stay, book online at the Hotel Gamla Fangelset, which is an old prison converted into a boutique hotel/hostel.  My room [cell] was very comfortable with good furnishings. It’s clean and friendly with facilities for DIY cooking.  Bathrooms are shared.  Located about a 6 minutes walk east from where the Umea Bus/taxi from the ferry terminal stops, it’s the best thing about the town.

Gateway to Sweden

I loved this hotel! The little rooms are so comfy!!!! There is no breakfast included though... cheese in a tube is not what I call breakfast! There is instant coffee and crackers in the kitchen and you can buy your own food and place it in one of two fridges.
