This establishment is a quite large building (five stories) right in the wilderness. The rooms and the restaurant is on a par with what you find in cities in Sweden. It is run by the STF Swedish Tourist Association. We stayed on the 4th floor and had a lovely view towards the sun-set. We had our dinners in the restaurant (as well as our breakfasts) and they were very good with both fish, meat and excellent wine. A fish dish in this part of Sweden often is fjällröding, a local char variety.

Unexpected luxury

We spent 2 comfortable nights here in a ground floor hostel room. The room was large and clean with 2 x single beds and a private bathroom. There are 10 x hostel rooms on each floor with a well-equipped kitchen and sitting-room with TV and lounges at the end of each floor. We were the only guests on the floor at this time of the year (the Wilderness road closes on 15 October until June) so we had the kitchen and sitting room to ourselves.

The hostel was very quiet and is in a beautiful location near the lake. The main hotel has  rooms (more expensive than the hostel) overlooking the lake as well as a restaurant and a big comfortable lounge area near reception. 

Our hostel room was warm and self-catering is the easiest (and cheapest!) option in this remote area. A very comfortable place to stay.

Wonderful view over the lake and mountains. Close to the lake and close to other attractions as Trappstegsforsen. Nice and comfortable rooms. Good food with local fish and meat. Very nice staff but too few. The restaurant staff had a really tough time serving all people.

All those foreign camper cars, unusually many from the Netherlands,  passing Saxnäs, they don't know what they miss when they do their own cooking all the time in their campers up on Stekenjokk where you see a lot of foreign vehicles parked.

The dining hall is exquisite with the large windows towards Lake Kultsjön and the Marsfjällen mountains and the vegetable buffet well chosen and the hot buffet dish is mostly very nice. 

Through the years, on our own or together with foreign guests,  we have planned our round trip over Stekenjokk in a way so we can make it to Saxnäs around lunch for a very enjoyable lunch! 

And perhaps you will walk over to Ricklundgården, an art museum in a Mediterranean style villa next to the restaurant!

When we were younger we brought a canoe, camped in a tent on an island in the lake and paddled to the restaurant for lunch. What a luxury in the "wilderness"!

The location has breathtaking views of the lake and mountains.  Friendly service and reasonable prices.  I ordered a hamburger and it was one of the best I'd ever had.  Nice beer selection.  Cool gift shop with some practical outdoor activity items (hatchet, hats, beef stick).  Overall, excellent and laid back.

...and that's not even the best part. The best part is the stunning view of the lake and the mountains. Often, when a restaurant has a great view, not much care is put into the food. At Saxnäsgården, none of the food is anything but perfect. Perfect not in a fussy way or in the presentation, just perfect as in the simplicity of a perfectly cooked pan of potatoes or a freshly baked loaf of bread. 

Don't get me wrong, Saxnäsgården is not serving peasant food, they are serving modern Scandinavian cuisine at its casual-dining peak. On Friday I had grilled arctic char (rödding) from local lakes with vegetables including fennel and a bernaise-ish sauce. On Saturday I had sous-vide flank steak with green and white asparagus. On Sunday I had lamb with roasted beets. Monday was my favorite, roast pork with butter-sautéd cabbage. (and potatoes, of course!) 

The day's special is served buffet style; I have NEVER had food like that at a buffet. You can also order from the bistro menu; the hamburger seems amazingly popular, considering what you're missing out on. The buffet includes bread and 3 salads of the day (each of which knocks it out of the park. Who knew a simple cucumber salad could be so satisfying?) I suppose ordering the hamburger might be justified by the fries which were very good.

Service is friendly and accommodating if a bit sparse. The space is big and modern, and the restaurant often seems empty. But the huge windows let the mountains and lake do the talking.

Had the most amazing dinner in the restaurant.  Extremely high quality food and service.  Huge portion of food and a great price.  Beautiful atmosphere.  Hope to come back soon.   Honestly just can't say enough nice things about this place.  

Only ate in the restaurant but WOW

I have visited this hotel several times a number of years ago. The hotel is located on one of the most scenic places in the western part of Vilhelmina Municipality, Västerbotten County, in northern Sweden. The hotel has a magnificent view of the lake "Kultsjön" and the mountain "Marsfjället" and one of its distinctive curved tops called "Stokken". The hotel has four floors, where most rooms have water views. The ground floor is both a restaurant and a gift shop where, among other things, unique Sami handicrafts are sold. The Sami people are an ethnic minority group living in northern Scandinavia and Russia. The restaurant serves local delicacies such as trout. In the surroundings you can both go hiking and cross country skiing. To go downhill skiing you have to go by car 20 kilometers west to Klimpfjäll. About 15 kilometers west of Saxnäs is also the Sami church site Fatmomakke where you can see the Sami's tipi huts. At Midsummer around 23-24-25 June, you can experience midsummer with a Sami church weekend with Masses in the church and dance around the maypole. The Salvation Army also has a prayer tipi hut where they have gatherings. Nearby is also a dance floor type of place. Many people sets up their caravans there and fish in the nearby lake Kultsjön or the river Ransarån.
