The Landgasthof Ruedihus is one of the Swiss historic hotels and it is very worth a stay to enjoy this gorgeous old wood building. It is great to just walk around and discover every nook and detail.
Their partner hotel, the Hotel Doldenhorn which is only a five minute walk away is probably a more comfortable option for a long stay with spa facilities and more services although those are widely also available for the Ruedihus guests. Breakfast in low season may also be served at the Doldenhorn which is a bit of a hassle but the breakfast is such a lavish affair, it is definitely worth the effort. Coffee machines may be a useful addition to the rooms at the Ruedihus. 
The on-site restaurant specializes in Swiss dishes and is also super atmospheric with low ceilings and wooden furnitures. Would definitely try it on a next visit.

Gorgeous historic building

We stayed for 2 nights. On the surface, the hotel looks very good: location, gardens, quaint atmosphere.

However, we had a serious problem with the bathroom. On the first night, we had no hot water and could neither wash nor take a shower. Also, the ventilator in the bathroom was broken. We tried to telephone reception (in the sister hotel, Waldhotel Doldenhorn) but the phone was also non-functional. Next morning, we reported it to the Doldenhorn Reception (no reception at Landgasthof Ruedihus) who sent a technician while we were out. However he reported that there was no problem with the water and offered to show me how the taps work (strictly unnecessary as I'm not a 6 year old child and have travelled extensively worldwide).

On the second night, the problem was worse. The washbasin was working but the temperature in the shower was far too hot (a health & safety hazard) and couldn't be regulated.

I reported the problem again on checkout. The hotel manager was "unavailable" and the receptionist claimed that their technician had now fixed the problem (albeit that the day before a different receptionist had advised me that there was no problem whatsoever!) and that I was somehow incapable of operating the shower correctly. I found this offensive under the circumstances. The hotel is "whitewashing" the problem.

As a Swiss citizen, I have the right and responsibility to report this health hazard to the Authority regulating hotels in Switzerland.

Beware: Health hazard in the bathroom

I loved this family  hotel: friendly and professional staff, simple and authentic style, beautiful nature around and lovely Ricola garden. I believe it was a true Swiss experience and I was not disappointed.

Great discovery for us! Beautiful chalet a bit outside Kandersteg. Very nice rooms and very friendly welcoming staff. Don't miss outside supper with very appealing menus. Other great news: you can use the spa next door which is beautiful (Relais et Chateaux).

Wonderful discovery

The Ruedihus and its setting are breathtaking in their quaint beauty, if you appreciate what is truly old and yet lovingly modified to be comfortable for today's guests.

If you are tall, you may wish to request a room with higher ceilings, as some of the original spaces will require that you duck.  However, opening a low, heavy door that is centuries old, walking up an old wooden staircase, using an ancient massive key to open an outside door after hours, are for us part of the charm and magic of this special place.

If you select half-board you may eat at either the Doldenhorn or Ruedihus.  The Doldenhorn dining room is very elegant and food and service are memorable.  Unfortunately it was closed one night of our stay.  The menu of the Ruedihus is skewed toward traditional Swiss offerings; the dining room there is what makes the meals most memorable.  It is a large space with original uneven wood floors, windows with beautiful old panes, all set with white linen and lovely crystal.  It is reminiscent of Colonial Williamsburg and most romantic.

We love this place, and have returned many times.  

Hikers, ask at the front desk for a reservation on the shuttlebus to the Gasterntal.  It is a breathtaking outing not to be missed!

Got invited by my wife for my birthday to this wonderful place ....
A real mountain Swiss place to enjoy.
Rooms are made out of wood (alpine cottage style) and clean.
Personal is ready to run the extra mile which is highly appreciable.
Food is very local and mountain like and tasty.
Really a nice place to enjoy for a week end.

Excellent place

Having visited Kandersteg for 30 years, I eventually got around to staying in this hotel.. and, very disappointingly, it was not nearly as good as it promised to be.

The location and the look of the building was idyllic, but you let yourselves down.

Housekeeping / Rooms - Few things...
Clutter - There is not a surface to put anything down on, everything is full of clutter... I know it is meant to be charming, but it really is just annoying... we need somewhere to put out case.
Lazy room cleaning - the linen was not changed in 5 days, and glasses were never washed, come on..
Rooms were rough and ready, not really that charming, for example, I do not appreciate getting cut on the rough wood on the bathroom door.

Food
Yes, it is Swiss and really the fact that you only serve Swiss produce is quirky, at first, then it simply becomes annoying... also, you don't only serve Swiss, there was tea and coffee on offer... so why not gin... also don't make your guests feel like idiots for asking, it is you that are unusual, not them!
The dining room was full of flies the one morning we breakfasted there.  I was horrified, it was so unpleasant we simply could not eat there, and we all left. When I mentioned that later, we were told it was because there was a stable next door... so beware.

Hidden Charges
Water, really, come on. You were underhand. Every time we asked for water as HOTEL GUESTS we got charged a great deal, that is just underhand and deceptive. We did complain at check out and it was taken off the bill... not without some discussion!

It was not as good as it promised to be...

Very special place with a lot of character and charm. The house is an old 18th century chalet. Everything is nice and cosy and we felt very well in the place. As a family of four, we hade the small adjacent chalet for us in a all wood spacious room. Hospitality and welcome were particularly positive. We also appreciated the swimming pool and spa located at next door Doldenhorn which is owned by the same family.

We will definitely come back
