The stuff was lovely, forthcoming even though we were late and the kitchen was about to close. 
We had mushroom soup and the best Spätzle I've ever eaten. The food was all in all amazingly delicious, fresh and tasty. 
I would strongly recommend this restaurant if you're in the vicinity. 

Best lunch ever

This is a lovely hotel with very pleasant rooms and very good wifi. The bathroom was a little small but despite being a small shower cubicle, the shower was a good one. What set them apart was the staff who were simply wonderful and when my car broke down did everything they could to help. It was a great place to stay with a dog too, there is a door from the car park that means you don't have to walk through past the restaurant every time you go in and out.

The staff are wonderful

This well-established hotel magnifies the immense beauty of undiscovered rural Switzerland, a place where the inhabitants are a significant part of its charm. They all know each other and go out of their way to ensure that visitors, especially those who overnight in this wonderful hotel, feel as welcome as their neighbor. I know this from experience; I met one inhabitant mid-Summer 1982 on the John D. Rockefeller Parkway, while my brother & I were pedaling North from Grand Tetons NP, WY-USA,  and he was pedaling South from Yellowstone NP, WY-USA. We exchanged information and have remained friends ever since. He stayed at my undergraduate apartment in ColumbiaMO-USA soon thereafter; I (& my family: wife/2 children) visited him & his wife/2 children much later, mid-Summer 2004; he solo visited us here in El PasoTX-USA earlier this year. Then, when I was arranging an overseas odyssey escort for my handicapped 84-year old mother, he invited us to spend two nights visiting them in Melchnau, and desired to put us up in this fine hotel. 
No way could I turn that down! And it truly turned out to be fantastic, as hostess Sabine saw to our every need. I was especially appreciative of the extra courtesy she/staff gave my mother.
Room #3 was extremely clean, comfortable, & quiet. The stairwell is broad, open, with ample rail/handholds for my handicapped (uses a cane) mother, but there is no elevator for wheelchairs.
Other than my good friends there and meeting other townsfolk, one of the outstanding highlights are the ruins of Grunenberg Castle, and, in fact, other, more ancient dwellings upon which the castle was built. The roads are the most perfect I've seen anywhere around the World, which also means that the road users--whether motorized, pedestrian, or non-motorized (bicycle) are complicit in making such fantastic roads. No matter what size your vehicle, EVERYONE shared the road--I look forward to return pedaling here on my Doublevision! 
Besides being with my good friends, I enjoyed the adjacent building's offerings: Nicolas Meat Shop. It is celebrating it's century anniversary when we were there 19-20JUN2014, and is the epitome of a family business, run by 4th generation Gottfried (& family). My mouth is watering for that delicious meatery, especially the jerky! 
Another great feature is hairdresser Yolanda at the boutique. My mother delighted in having her hair worked on--something she lacked for the next 1.5 months. Meanwhile, I was able to post cards & a package with Bettina at CH Mail, as well as enjoying a vigorous walkabout. 
Two days was barely long enough to sample this wonderful community and people. 
I'll return, and you can be sure Gasthof Lowen will figure prominently in that return!

Stay here and be a guest in the best!

We needed some where to stay on route from UK to Italy and the Gastof Lowen was perfect! Rooms were great, clean and a really good size. Staff couldn't do enough. Owner herself greeted us and made sure we had everything we needed. Nothing was too much trouble. We had dinner here and it was delicious! Really can't fault this place and it made a great stop off as between Basel and Luzern. Best of all it was really good value for money as Switzerland overall is rather expensive. Not too far off the main roads but the other reviewer is right you will need GPS as Melchnau doesn't show on the map! 

P.s. Not sure if its had a complete makeover but it doesn't look like the picture on trip advisor. The pictures on booking.com do it far more justice!
