Had my birthday dinner here and I have to admit, it was very good.
First of all, how do we get there. Villigen is a bit "rural" but there is a public bus stopping in the village. There is parking around the venue, it can get crowded. Ambiance of the place is fine and the service team is taking great care.
The meal we had was from their standard menu, for some reason they are not serving deer or venison although it is season and the forests around Villigen should be able to provide plenty of supplies. Neverthelss, the choice is fine and the quality even better. Timewis everything was served in good intervalls. Liked it very much. Pricing, is even for Switzerland, rather high and the CHF 11 they charge for 1 L. of mineral water is something I would be ashame of. I would reconsider this price very quickly.
Should you go there? Why not, the food is very good, and that is the main reason you go out for dinner, isn't it?

a nice birthday dinner

I stayed here for 2 nights during a work trip to the Swiss Light Source. The location of this hotel from PSI is great, it's only a 10-15 min walk. The hotel itself is traditional and the rooms are small but have character. The village doesn't offer much but there is a small bakery not too far from the hotel. Overall, would recommend this hotel to other travelers.

Close to Paul Scherrer Institut

We stayed here for one night. Arrived after a long journey from Italy, didn't find the staff particularly friendly on arrival. We checked in and then asked if we could have a drink in the restaurant , we were told no! We then asked could we book a table for a meal later in the evening, we were told no, they were fully booked, it was only 6.30 at this point. We then asked if there was anywhere else in town we could eat/drink, we were shown a very dubious looking place just down the road, which frankly was not all inviting. So we had no choice but to get into the car and go and find somewhere. The last thing we wanted to do after a long journey on a very hot day. The room was adequate and clean but no tea or coffee making facilities. We had to ask for 2 mugs of hot water and milk. It was very noisy from the restaurant below and also traffic. The room was hot so needed a window open.
Breakfast was not impressive, no one around, food just laid out, plate of cold meat and cheese on the side, uncovered with flies on it. Fruit salad the same. Had to go and find someone to ask for coffee. Came to check out and once again no one around, kept waiting. At 200SF it was not good value for money. 

Unwelcoming and poor value for money

I stayed in that hotel for two nights - on the first night, when I arrived, there was nobody at the reception but I got my room (third floor, no elevator).
The room was medium size with two separate, small beds with a small desk and a small wardrobe. The bathroom, small in size, is separated by a sliding door with a basic shower.
Everything was clean upon my arrival just the main light was not working (bulb broken). So I removed the bulb (with a label on it) and went to bed a bit later (mind, there was nobody around in the hotel/restaurant). 
The breakfast only started at 7 sharp (which means the waiter was starting to put the stuff into the room) and was basic (rolls, little cold cuts, very little cheese, two choice of cereals, jams, butter, and not much more) however there was a lot of tea and juice.
When I got back the next evening, the parking lot was full and I had to park across in the overflow parking lot which was bad as it was raining heavily.

I had a dinner here with people from work. The menu is limited to traditional meat dishes. My dish, which was about 40 CHF includes a big piece of medium quality beef, which was, however, well prepared. It came with vegis and sliced potatoes. The portion size was generous for my taste. The wine that we ordered was from one of the local wine makers and pretty good. 

I asked for my leftovers to be wrapped up to take away. What I got back was my leftovers wrapped in transparent foil - not exactly the stylish way of taking your leftovers home.

It's an ok experience, but wouldn't drive an extra mile to eat here. I have heard from several people that the rooms are quite nice. The hotel is within walking distance of the nearby science lab, and a good alternative if you can't get accommodation there.
