Ever had the feeling that you’ve been thrown back in time?  No, then visit St Ursanne and especially the Peanut Lodge. Great theme hotel, with an excellent restaurant. The village and surroundings is just great for a brake.

The Dame & the Knight

I have twice been impressed by the quality of meals prepared at this lovely spot. An excellent selection of local beer and wine compliment a seasonally-adjusted menu. Such beautiful food. The soufflée glacée a l'absinthe is unique and incredible!!

I want to write more about the town than about my specific hotel - which was fine - but it was the place and the people that really impressed me.

Saint-Ursanne is officially a town, but in reality it is a small village. The historical part, where nearly all the hotels and restaurants are is basically one main street, with smaller streets running off it. The whole can't be much more than one square mile. Architecturally, it is all something else again; I can't remember seeing a building less than two hundred years old, there are at least three very beautiful Renaissance fountains, you can't get into the town except by passing through one of the three fortified gates, there is a very beautiful church and cloister ... 

If you think of the town's shape as rectangular, with the main street running through the longer length, the river Doubs, here wide,green and tranquil, flows along the outer edge of one long side. The other long side is bordered by a quite precipitous mountain. The two short sides are protected by the medieval gates. So the town is a small enclosed feast for the eyes.

And yes, it is very quiet. cars do go along the main street, but not that many of them,  especially in the evenings. It's a place of great calm and beauty. Don't go there if you are looking for lively night life, although there are fairly frequent classical music events.

But what I want to celebrate most is the people who live and work there. I have never before encountered so much spontaneous kindness and helpfulness concentrated in such a small place; the bus driver who drove me from the station when I arrived and took a lot of trouble to make sure that I had seen where my hotel was, the woman who stopped her car to make sure that I could get into the hotel (closed the day I arrived - I had an access code to let myself in), the woman from the hotel staff who volunteered to buy mosquito repellent for me in the larger town where she lives, these are only a small sample of what seemed a constant friendliness and desire to be helpful.

Saint Ursanne is out of the way,but very much worth a visit.

A place of kindliness

A simple 2 star hotel in the very quiet town of St Ursanne. The room we had was very large, with TV and minibar. Clearly, everything is a bit old and old-fashioned, but no more is to be expected from such a hotel. The mattresses are of poor quality. I did not sleep very well. 

It's very pleasant to have a bath with no windowed door (no need to wake-up the partner when going to the bathroom in the middle of the night) and with the light switch inside the bathroom. Modern hotel designers have not yet raged in this place.
