If you want back ache from collapsed mattresses; if you want to be cold in winter; and if you’d like to be insulted by the proprietor - this is the place for you!

We stayed here during Easter 2013. The mattresses on the bed were concave from too much use. By the third night, we both had severe back ache.

Very politely, we informed the proprietors - a couple - about this problem and asked if the mattresses could be changed; or - as we were almost the only guests - whether there was another room we might use. The response was blunt: ‘The mattresses are special to the bed’. End of conversation.

Later that day we checked the mattresses in an adjacent room, whose door had been left ajar. They were firm. We went again to the proprietor and insisted that we change our room. Grudgingly, they acquiesced. We changed room - but there was no offer of assistance from the proprietors. 

The new room turned out to be very, very cold, and the radiator was switched off. Unsure whether the heating was controlled centrally, we asked the proprietors - very politely and somewhat diffidently - how the heating worked. 

In a normal establishment, the proprietors might have smiled and explained that each radiator operated independently, and could be turned on from within the room. In that normal establishment, the proprietor or manager might have accompanied the guest to the room and turned the radiator on. Indeed, in a normal establishment, the radiator might have been turned on when the guests changed room, so that the guests were comfortable from the start. 

But the Rohrimoos Bad is not like that. The request prompted an astonishing outburst. ‘You changed your room’, boomed the husband-proprietor accusingly, punching the air with his fist for emphasis. He made it abundantly clear that, so far as he was concerned, we - the guests - were nothing but troublemakers. 

It was the final straw. We packed in haste and checked out within minutes. 

The Rohrimoos Bad is cheap. It’s basic and it’s clean. The only serious ‘structural’ problem are the severely creaking floors - terrible for visits to the bathroom at night! The location is excellent, with wonderful views across the Bernese Oberland.

But our stay here was deeply unpleasant.....
