On a picturesque street, entrance by side alley, pleasant staff, breakfast included.  The room with two single beds was somewhat spartan but entirely functional.  Again, very clean room and washroom. Fairly good value for money - for Switzerland!  

Clean and good location

This small hotel comprises an old characterful building and is simply furnished in a modern style. Nothing fancy but it met all our requirements. It is within easy reach of Montreux, Vevey and other towns along Lake Leman at a more affordable price than hotels there. Hotel du Soleil was clean, everything worked. There is no lift but the very helpful owner was happy to assist with our luggage. A good variety of food was available for the buffet breakfast.

Just what we needed

This is a family-run hotel where the owners are doing everything to make their guests' stay enjoyable.  We really felt at home here!
Sven quickly answered our ring at the door and took us to the breakfast room to check us in.  (There is no Reception desk.)  While this was being completed, our suitcase was whisked away to our room, so we didn't even have to carry it up the flight of stairs. Although it was only 11.30 a.m., our room was ready.  Sven kindly offered us a portable fan; we accepted, as it was very warm while we were there.
We loved our room.  
Firstly, it was spotlessly clean.  
Secondly, it was very big, with two single beds pushed together, a desk with a chair and a large sofa (which might have been a sofa bed.)  The bathroom, too, was large, with a shower over the bath and a set of shelves to hold toiletries thoughtfully included.  So many bathrooms have insufficient bench or shelf space.
Thirdly, it was very quiet, looking towards the mountains away from the lake.  We kept the outside shutters ajar and the internal windows (double-glazed for winter cold), wide open the whole time we were there.  (No need for window screens here; no bugs!)  We are both sound sleepers, so the church bells chiming the hour did not wake us.
Two bedside lights and a lamp on the desk give light where it's needed.
Big plus... Tea-making facilities, with a decent-sized jug and a mini fridge.  
The breakfast room has been set up attractively.  The buffet has juice, fresh fruit, cereals, yoghurt, jams, hard-boiled eggs and ham and cheese.  A basket of bread, rolls and delicious mini croissants is placed on each table.  Tea and coffee is self-serve.  Over breakfast, Sven gave us suggestions for sight-seeing activities and we always enjoyed chatting with him.

Location:  We arrived in Villeneuve by ferry from Montreux.  Walk straight ahead past the Coop, and take the first street on the right.  We couldn’t see a street sign, but it’s the street with the flags.  The hotel is two short blocks down, on the left.  The entrance is down the side street.
Coming by train, exit the station towards the lake and at the fountain, take the street on your left. The hotel is two blocks down, on the left.  
Bus number 201 from Montreux will drop you in front of the station.
It's a 20 minutes’ walk to Chillon Castle along the lakeshore and about an hour to Montreux.

We love this area of Switzerland and hope to return in the near future.  You can be sure that we'll head for the charming old town of Villeneuve (in preference to busier Montreux), and stay at the Hotel du Soleil again.  Thanks, Sven and Coraline for a great stay.

We loved this hotel

We were coming by train from London - Eurostar to Paris, TGV Lyria to Lausanne, and local rail to Villeneuve.  The through booking in Paris only allowed one hour from Eurostar arrival at the Gare du Nord until the departure of the next train from Gare de Lyon.  Needless to say, after battling lines for RER tickets to make the station hop, we arrived at the Gare de Lyon in time to watch our train depart. We were fortunate to get the next train which left two hours later.  Unfortunately, that would put us in Villeneuve after the 10 PM closing of the hotel.  Fortunately, I was able to call ahead from the train and speak to the proprietor.  He gave me the code to the front door, left my room unlocked and left the keys in the room.  What a nice, helpful thing to do.
Now to the nitty gritty about the hotel.  There is no elevator.  Our bags were heavy, very heavy and large.  The steps are steep.  Travel light if you are going there.  The room was small, but not exceptionally small by European standards.  By US standards, however, it makes Holiday Inns seem spacious. The shower temperature fluctuates pretty dramatically, making showers an adventure, regardless of time of day.  The bed was comfortable.  Like most of the hotels we've come across in Europe, the bed has a duvet and no top sheet.  While the duvet is nice, it makes me too hot while keeping things perfect for my wife.  A top sheet would let me push off the duvet while letting my wife sleep comfortably.  Breakfast was nice but limited to Continental style.  The coffee was very good, dispensed by a single (self) serving machine that produced a flavorful brew.  The have two parking spaces, but most visitors don't seem to have any need for a car.  
The location of the hotel is fabulous, a shot walk from the station and an equally short walk from the lake-shore.  Old town Villeneuve is charming and a delight to navigate on foot.  Shopkeepers are friendly in the area, but beware, like most everything in Switzerland, things can be more expensive the they are in the States.
A final comment about the on premise restaurant.  It does not appear to be run by the hotel proprietor and is principally a Chinese restaurant.  We did not eat there as we weren't in Switzerland to eat Chinese food.  Your choices may vary.

I stayed here for a couple of nights on business. I chose it based on its Tripadvisor rating, but was rather underwhelmed. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the hotel, and the guy who runs it is perfectly friendly, but there's really nothing that stands out in my mind requiring a recommendation.

The Main Street it is on is very quiet and has all of Villeneuve's 6-or-so restaurants so from that point of view it works well as a base. There are also a couple of parking spots out the back which is handy.

So all in all, certainly nothing to complain about but at the same time, nothing to shout about either.
