Lovely location, good dinner, nice hot spring. Older hotel, but very friendly staff.  Note that the road through to YuShan Park is closed and has been for years, perhaps re-opening 2021.  Even though the road terminates about 30 minutes inland, lots of beautiful scenery, especially on a sunny day.

Get a room overlooking the valley and river (not the highway).

Lovely location, good food

This place is paradise and has the best hot spring I've ever come across. And the staff are so cool here very chatty and welcoming a really nice change.. Not to say Taiwanese in other parts are rude at all but they can be very stand offish. I found all the locals i met up this Vally were  really cool people. 
Very comfy clean modern rooms with nice veiws. 
Will be back oneday forsure.

Couldn't be better 

We booked this hotel for one night
& was due to arrived by bicycle but my husband wasn’t well and couldn’t have manage the climb from valley.  I phoned the hotel & spoke with Anthony who spoke excellent English and couldn’t have been more helpful.  He sorted us out with a taxi to carry us and the bikes and later trains to help us get to our next destination.
Such wonderful service!

We enjoyed our stay here, our room was huge, the spa was lovely even in the rain & we enjoyed the dinner.  It’s a shame the suspension bridge was under construction but that’s not the hotels fault.

Amazing service and so helpful 

Located in Wulu about 45 minutes up the eastern end of Taiwan's South Cross Island Highway, The Chief Spa Hotel (天龍飯店) is one of the few places on the road tourists can stop and enjoy the rugged surroundings. The facilities include a restaurant and a pretty nice outdoor hot spring with three pools (hot, warm, and cold). It's also next to an old suspension bridge across the gorge built during the Japanese era, but now closed for repairs. The staff also organize activities for guests every day, when we were there it was an informational hike up the highway in the early morning to see some of the more spectacular parts of the gorge and another hot spring (流口溫泉), in the evening they offered a class to make rice cakes. Staff were friendly and several speak English. Other than the bathrooms needing an upgrade, it was a nice place to stay. 

To get there, just drive up the highway from either direction, you can't miss it (it's 7 stories tall, and right next to one of the police stations on the route). Do not plan on a late arrival - this road is dangerous during the day (sharp turns on a road hugging the cliff, landslides, crazy local drivers) and it is unlit at night, making it positively treacherous. Note that Apple Maps does not understand the address in English or Chinese and if you input "Wulu" it will send you up a narrow road from the highway to the Bunun aboriginal village - turn around as soon as possible and get back on the highway!) 

Rates go up on the weekend. Chinese-style breakfast (rice, congee, a few simple vegetable dishes, bamboo, fried eggs, etc.) is included in the rate we had and they offer very large set meals for about NT$300 (I recommend the chicken).

Remote and peaceful

A nice quiet hotel with excellent staff. The out door hot spring pools were fun, indoor baths with hot spring water.

Hiking in the hills or by the river was great, at night or during the day. Look for the bug sheets at night, you will see some really interesting bugs.
