The only possible complaint I have about the hostel is that it's not right at the Train Station but that means it's closer to some awesome restaurants, which ends up being better in my opinion. 

Super welcoming hosts, that didn't make me switch beds even though I extended my stay online in a cheaper room. When the restaurant I wanted to was closed on a Thursday the person working that night knew they had a location downtown and called to make sure they were open. He also helped look for train tickets for me and offered to drive me to get them if need be (thankfully I decided to stay an extra night instead) 

If staying there I recommend eating at the Dumpling House (its name in google maps), 10 steamed dumplings for 50, which I would've eaten every day in Taiwan if I could, and Dos Tacos which is really good Mexican for a reasonable price (395 for a pulled pork Chimichanga).

My other advise is to leave for Taroko as early as possible and arrange to go on one of the trails that requires a permit, I wish I had done this and though about going back to hike and eat tacos & dumplings. 

One of the people I met did the bike trip down to Taitung and if it's not too hot out and  you're fit that seems like the best way to see the east coast. I went from Hualien to Kaohsiung and it feels like I missed at lot, so if you're not pressed for time explore more outside of the west coast cities.

Favorite Hostel in all of Taiwan

Had a great time staying at this hostel. The owner is very nice and helpful, the place is clean and the location perfect. Stayed two nights and spend a whole day visiting Taroko National Park. There is great information about tours and busses at the hostel. Would come back anytime. Thank you! 


Great stay

Sleeping boot was my first ever stay at a hostel and it certainly exceeded my expectations. The room was clean and so was the bathroom. Paul, the owner was super friendly and even upgraded me to a double bedroom with no additional charge. Would definitely come back again! 

Exceptional hostel

came back again after few years since my last visit. lots of improvement like curtain on the individual bed, more privacy now. host and the helpers are very friendly and helpful. always my first choice when I visit Hualien.

Still as Good as Years Ago

The reception guy "ah zhong" is very helpful and friendly. He provide all the information of foods and drinks nearby, as well as the detail info about Taroko National Park. Common area is cool to hang out with other travelers. I guess there isn't enough toilet and bathroom if the place is fully occupied. Well it is indeed a great budget and friendly hostel at Hualien that i'll go back again.

Good vibes and friendly hostel

I booked a private ensuite room at Sleeping Boot because I was relocating to Hualien to study Mandarin and needed a room while I hunted for an apartment.  

Nick and the owner were exceedingly warm and welcoming and helped me search the internet for apartments and then shuttled me around Hualien on a scooter to show me a range of neighborhoods and apartments.  Once I chose my favorite, Nick helped me negotiate the lease, written in Chinese, and then helped me move in and do the initial shopping.

You can’t beat Sleeping Boot for comfort, warmth, hospitality and friendliness.  Price was fair and room was quiet, clean and comfortable.

Congrats to Sleeping Boot for creating a great hostel in Hualien, Taiwan’s attractive gateway to Taroko and the East Rift Valley!

Sleeping Boot redefines hospitality

I enjoyed my stay in the sleeping boat very much. I have nothing to complain about, very clean, friendly and by far the best bed I have ever made in a hostel. The service was also great. I got tips every day on what to do in the hualien and surroundings. And so I also extended one more night! All in one genius hostel. Would definitely book again!

Very good hostel

One of the best backpacker that Jai makes. The clean rooms with opaque curtains for each bed. The staff is incredibly friendly and smiling. Geographically the Hostel is located between the train station 5/10min walking and the night market and restaurants 10min. In short, a perfect hostel!!!

The hostel is conveniently located, about 10 minutes from the train station.The owners of the place speak very well English and help with information on how to arrange stay in Hualien.The accommodation seems perfect in terms of size, comfort and cleanliness.There is a common area and a nice kitchen.

I had a really good time in the sleeping boot. The staff are very friendly and available. They helped me whenever I needed help. The rooms are impeccable in terms of cleanliness and decoration. I will return without hesitation.
