We paid $C34.45 a night for a room with 2 beds, Tues and Wed. Unlike North America two beds is not the norm. Clean, view out window towards the docks. Breakfast was excellent. Many dishes. Omelette, veggies, fried rice, toast, oranges, coffee, rice porridge etc. Spread was more like lunch/dinner than breakfast. Room has hot water, fridge, bottled water, good wifi, tv, and free parking. Thought there was no shampoo etc. but found it, toothbrushes, shower gel etc.in the desk drawer. Room floor is raised from the hallway and floor drops into the bathroom. Not sure if this has a functional reason (e.g.plumbing under floor) or just design. Got to watch going to the bathroom in the middle of the night!  Staff very friendly, English speaking on the desk and helpful. Lobby etc.very modern and tasteful. Would thoroughly recommend this hotel. (Las Vegas hotels with their endless add-ons could learn a thing or two from this hotel)

Highly recommended

The room was very comfortable and the air conditioning was centralised. Unfortunately, it was not adjustable, but we plugged the air conditioner shutter, thus regulating the temperature. The only drawback was that the toilet drain didn't work well, so you could feel the continuous suction of water.

5 days, good hotel

Stayed there during 3 days. Lot of space in the room (2 beds, 1 king size and 1 double size) and in the bathroom. Price was reasonable (150 euros for our stay). Hotel is near the city center and the university of Kaohshiung. Did not try the breakfast. Good experience overall but don't expect too much of this city.

Good hotel

A nice hotel not far from 2 mrt stations nice staff. The hotel is quite old and charming onside if you like this. Look in the draw in the main room under the TV fir your toiletries even supplied a condom lol 

Cheap cheerful and traditional 

Outstanding staff and service with decent English, very large rooms, clean and fairly comfortable, beds were too small for me (6ft) but that wasn't a problem, hotel was very dated and furnishings were old, breakfast was terrible, location is a little out the way but Kaohsiung is small so this isn't a problem and there is an MRT close, you have to pay extra for bicycle rental, could be cheaper.

Overall, it was ok but there are much better places to stay in Kaohsiung for a similar price. I wouldn't stay again.

Ok - Wouldn't Recommend

I stayed here for way too long in the Fall of 09 and would urge you to stay away from this hotel. The staff is beyond unprofessional and there are, as the other reviews have stated, much better options for the money.
First, concrete reasons why I didn't like this hotel:
the lobby is the nicest (but still kind of tacky) part of the hotel, which is probably why the website features so many pictures. however, the lobby is much newer than the rest of the hotel and the rooms are spotty on quality- if you do decide to stay here, ask for a better room if you don't like what you are first offered. I agree with previous reviews stating the breakfast is kind of nauseating as the food is greasy  (and recycled from day to day??)and luke-warm- I ended up mopping it and microwaving it when it in a pinch. If I had to do it again, I'd stay at another hotel and use the money to eat real TW breakfast- you tiao, dou jiang, etc etc. The lobby would be pleasant but there are a ton of bugs- got too many painful bug bites to really recommend chilling here if the wireless in your room doesn't work, which it won't- I couldn't get on-line over 50% of the time and when I asked staff to address the problem, they did nothing. Once they sent the "bellboy" to my room to look at my computer but he couldn't read the English commands  that said that the problem was an unplugged network cable and he stunk- it left a bad odor in my room and, although they offered, I never accepted that "help" again.
The rooms are, on the whole, pretty tacky- I felt like I was in a seedy love hotel and am still not sure if the Huahou is that kind of hotel or not. Mirrors on the ceilings, round beds, stereo systems with controls integrated into the beds (of course none of them actually work) are pretty standard decor for this place. The crowd matches that vibe- loud Mainlander tour groups who yell to each other across the hall late at night, when they aren't belching (also very loudly in the hallway).
Location might be ok depending on where you plan to go- if you plan on taking mostly cabs, motor-bike or hired car, you'll be fine. The hotel is in a sort of grungy location, with not much going on- I guess you could call it "Little Manila." 
 The hotel has "bike rental" but the bikes on offer are seriously decrepit and if one happens to malfunction while you use it, guess who has to pay? Although you could probably chalk up any damage as a pre-existing condition because I don't think anyone would be able to tell..
The hotel is pretty close to Fisherman's Wharf (10 minute walk), but if you're reading this review in English, I don't think you want to go- cheesy and overpriced "Texan", "Australian" or "Italian" "restaurants" and "pubs" with atrocious music and pushy wait-staff. I seriously don't know why the city pushes that place so much- although I can see some locals seeing the place as "exotic," there are legit Irish bars and Italian noodle joints elsewhere in the city. It's relatively close to Sizhiwan/ British Consulate/ferry to Qijin (maybe 2-5 km?) but if you want to be in that area, I'd recommend you stay at NYSYU's Sizhiwan resort instead. Having been here for a while, I'd honestly say I don't do anything in the immediate vicinity of the hotel-  it's in an awkward no-man's land and you either have to go further to Hamasen or closer to the Love River in Yancheng. 
Without going into too many details about the lack of professionalism about the staff, I will just say that they will say anything in order to have you stay at the hotel (they will show you a washer and dryer and say they are free of charge. Turns out the washer is ghetto, and the dryer never worked- good luck hanging your clothes in the humidity of Kaohsiung!) and once you do- watch out. They will do anything to cut costs- I was told that towel service was no longer included for my stay, even though it had been provided without issue for over two months (they gave me a towel and told me to wash it). When I complained, they said that our lack of contract meant that they were obligated to provide me nothing (I asked for a contract  at the beginning of the stay and upon renewal each month and they said making one was "tai ma fan" or too bothersome). Yes, this is pretty frivolous- however, if the staff are willing to cheat me over such a small issue, who knows what else they'll come up with??  So- caveat emptor...
