We booked the Liwu Hostel based on the reviews from Travelocity and Hotels.com
The place is in a small town but there is a bus that will take you to Taroko from the Xiechen station 
There are 2 buses and only one of the two #1133 accepts the day pass, but both accept the metro card for tickets.
You can get the day pass at 7-11 or get the metro card at the MRT station. 
Our room with 2 beds was spacious, had AC and a private bathroom with hot water and  all the toiletries. We actually had a good view from the room, since the hotel overlooks the Liwu river,  
The staff was very helpful, even when we went in the afternoon before the check in time, 
Also they let us keep our bag in their lobby on the check out day so we could go to the park without our luggage and then pick up our bag on our way to the station. 
Generally there is not much English spoken in Taroko except in the visitor center . 
but you can get by.
The breakfast in this hotel was a nice Taiwanese breakfast, we sat outside the hotel and enjoyed the birds and the flora and fauna around while having our breakfast. Here again the staff was very helpful. 
Overall we enjoyed  our stay in this hotel and the visit to Taroko National Park.  

Quiet place very close to Taroko National Park

We were quite happy with this hotel. My friend and I stayed here for one night. It's very quiet, close to a bus stop and conveniently located next to mini markets. You can even walk to the Taroko National Park HQ. 

The staff was very friendly despite not speaking much English. They also looked after our bags when we went hiking after checking out of our room. 

Breakfast was included, which was okay and reasonable for the price we paid. The breakfast window overlooks a small river. The rooms were quite clean, but a little bit dark.

Great location, clean, friendly staff, and quiet

Large room with ensuite and two beds. Breakfast included - easy walking distance to the Taroko National Park Headquarters
 Helpful staff despite little English. Green tea only in room etc so bring your powdered coffee if you prefer that

Lovely and clean 

Stayed 4 nights at twin sharing room. Short walk to 7-11 and 5 min walk to bus-stop. A number of eateries close by. Breakfast was tasty with a view of Liwu river.  Wifi was steady. Make sure no toilet paper into the WC. Overall, a pleasant stay.

Great location for hikers

Me and 2 friends stayed here and the Hostel owner/man at reception was really friendly. He gave us lots of information about where to go and what to see, and all in English. We also really really appreciated the free coffee sachets in the morning, free is always good.

Rooms were nice, beds were hard (classic Asia) and Hostel was easy to find.

If you're in the area it's a nice quiet, cheap and helpful place. Go explore Taroko!

Friendly, quiet and comfy

I picked this hotel because of its location. Its a 10 min walk to the Taroko Park visitor center, steps away from the bus stop that takes you to all the major attractions inside the park, and its a short walk to the near by 7-11. Its also a 5 min cab ride from the Taroko train station.

There weren't any places to eat around the hotel, except for the 7-11. The hotel does have a small restaurant that is run by the mother/ daughter that run the hotel. The food was good. There was a small menu to choose from that consists of typical Taiwanese dishes. The breakfast was included in my stay and it was average.

My room was located on the 2nd floor and it was nice and spacious. My only issue was the poor air conditioning. It took a while for the room to cool down at night.

The staff were friendly. They didn't speak any English but they used google translate to communicate with me. They went out of their way to print a park map for me and highlighted all the sights that I should see within the park.

Great location!

Liwu Hotel is in a great location for exploring the park. Our room was in the first basement level, level 2. We had what appeared to be the only room with sunlight, as the others open onto a concrete retaining wall that the hotel sits in, and looked very dark.

Airconditioner works well. Good TV. Bathroom was like the rest, shower goes everywhere, didn't really drain well so bathroom becomes wet feet zone. Beds were comfy too.

Service friendly

Didn't eat dinner there, but breakfast was good enough. There's DIY toast and jam, and a mix of cooked buns, vegetable things, sometimes scrambled eggs, and conji. Coffee machine and a good view from the dining area.

Food next door is fresh and reasonably tasty. Steamed veg and dumplings quite good. Service is perhaps...uninspired, but amusing. Couple that work there seem in no rush to open or serve you, and they wait for their worker, who comes late. Funny because the place doubles as their lounge so they sit and watch tv, so we ate outside.

We also ate up the road on the right, towards the park. Great wild boar!

To see the park, you can just catch the 302 from the visitor centre (10 mins walk over the river), or even just up from the hotel. The great thing is you can just get off and on at whichever stop you like using day pass (you can buy for $150 on bus) or EasyCard. I just mapped out which walks we were doing the night before.
