We choose this hostel for our first nights in Tanzania. Exhausted from the flight, we arrived there with a taxi and were thrilled. While outside the agitated everyday tanzanian lives takes place, inside we had the feeling to arrive in a completely different world: Very friendly and open people who are willing to help you in any way, made this stay unforgettable. Not only the simple, but very good food, but the whole christian atmosphere and the possibility to also join a church servie on sunday rendered our stay there an extraordinary experience during our stay in Tanzania. Absolutely recommended!

Tanzania couldn't greet you nicer

The location may not look good but inside the Salvation Army compound, it is wonderful. It is very peaceful. I stayed in a dorm having basic necessities. But it is clean. The compound is also clean. Inside the compound there is a school for the physically challenged children. I did not get review on that, so I came to know about that on my last day. In the morning, before leaving for Zanzibar I went to the school. You could see children on wheel chair cleaning the pavements with a broom or some with a crutch watering the plants. All would come to greet you and to shake hands with you. It was so touching meeting them. Next time when I am in Dar es Salaam I would definitely spend a whole day with them.

The breakfast is really good. There was sausages, boiled eggs, milk, tea, coffee ,cocoa,fresh fruit juice, fresh fruits, breads, cakes, mandazis, corn flakes.

In front of the hostel you can take a Dalla Dalla( bus) to reach "Station", costs only 400 TSH. Station is the City centre from where you can take the ferry to Zanzibar. The bus stop is called Wokovu, in Swahilli.

There was no wifi but I did not mind that.

We stayed before we went to Zanzibar and when we came back. 

We used a taxi to get around and get food, since there's nothing around the hostel. We arrived when their kitchen was already closed. Taxis are expensive it seems everywhere in Dar es Salaam. 

The first room we stayed in, was one that wasn't renovated yet. It was fine, reasonably clean. Cheap and cheerful. 

The second time we stayed in one of their renovated rooms, 4 dollars more expensive, but worth the money! 
Clean, nicely furnished and comfortable beds! 
The showers are cold, but we had no problems with this.

Breakfast was okay both times! 
Staff was very friendly & helpful!! 

It's a great option when you're traveling through and need a cheap and safe place to stay the night. 

Enjoyed our stay! 

The staff was a bit odd (one of them was very attentive but the other seemed to be bothered by anything we commented on) and the food at the restaurant was not very good, but the rooms were clean and with mosquito nets.

A good option for adjusted budgets.

Pros: Room was comfortable. Easy to find (if you know it is inside the Salvation Army Compound). Breakfast was good. The drinking water for sale at reception had a very good price. It was so difficult to get around the area that I hired a driver - Salehe (0755 192 128) who had great rates and even picked me up to go to the airport at 4am. He did a great job! 

Cons: Not a great part of town. No nearby restaurants. Needed to hire a driver to get around. They do not actually have an airport shuttle - offered to call me an expensive taxi.

Good value, not in a great area but safe inside the compound ...

Rooms are okay very cheap do not order food here takes around 2 hours. Went go get a drink as had not seen a waiter for half hour and the man at reception told me to sit down. Very cheap hotel for 1 night shuttle to airport 30 mins

Do not order food here!!

Very nice spacious and independent room. The staff arranged: we arrived very early in the morning and they allowed us to have breakfast. They can arrange for a taxi to pick you up at the airport. They even book a taxi to take us on a bus at 5am. However, it is quite far from the city centre which can be expensive by taxi.
