good  place stay

Stayed the nights of 14 and 15 December 2016 and paid US$50 per night for three people in a room with a double bed, single bed, private bathroom, mosquito nets, towels, and TV with 10 channels. Breakfast is included. Good WiFi signal throughout the hotel. Local shops and a cash machine are within walking distance. Staff were helpful with local information and excursions can be booked at reception. We booked a day trip using a private car with a driver to Ngezi Forest, Vumawimbi Beach and Kigomasha Peninsula Lighthouse for US$60. Recommended for a good budget stay on Pemba Island.

Good budget accommodation on Pemba Island

I spent 4 nights at the Crown in September and found it to be comfortable, clean, professional and friendly - I'd happily stay there again.  At about $25 a night it is good value too and the customers are a mixture of locals and travellers.  They can also help arrange tours etc. 
The hotel is well situated for sightseeing as many of Pemba's sights are in the north and centre of the island.  Wete itself is a quiet town and the Crown is in the centre close to the main shops, restaurants etc.

Good place to stay

I stayed here for 6 nights at 30,000 TZS/night. Considering the lack of options in Wete and overall hotel standards in the area, it was pretty good value. But you may or may not get this rate because the quote was different each time I asked. I got the 30,000 TZS rate when a Zanzibari colleague made the reservation for me. If you're a foreigner you may be quoted 30 USD, which is about 55,000 TZS at the time of this writing. I think that's a little expensive for what it offers.

Service: Staff are friendly, and front desk staff can speak some limited English. However, anything beyond greetings and payments can be difficult to communicate if you don't speak Swahili. The main front desk staff person never gave a straight answer to my questions, partly because they have not established any standard services beyond providing breakfast. It seems they make up the services and rates as they go along, so you have to be patient. 

Breakfast: Included, and starts at 7:30. Chai tea bags, Africafe, two fried eggs, bread/pancakes, the common Blue Band "medium fat spread," jam, and a side of fruit. Very basic but standard quality for low-to-mid-range hotels in Tanzania. The women who serve the breakfast are friendly and attentive.

Dinner: If you want a full dinner it's a good idea to order it with the hotel in advance because almost everything in town is closed after 5 pm. It needs to be ordered early in the morning or the evening before, because the cook has to shop specifically for you during the day. They prepare standard Zanzibari meals such as curries and pilau, which taste decent. But the ordering process was a big project for them - the staff had a big conversation amongst themselves and presented a budget to me after 3 hours. My first dinner cost 11,000 TZS but it went down after that to 6,000 ~ 8,000 TZS because they could continue to use some of the spices and ingredients for subsequent meals. On top of that, they charged a 2,000 TZS preparation fee per meal. Be sure to clarify all this up front because it's not a standardized service and there were surprises for me along the way.

Amenities: Furnishings are generally a bit old and worn, but functional. AC and hot water worked fine. Power outages were common but generally lasted 1 to 2 hours, so it was tolerable. 

Cleanliness: Mediocre. 

Noise: The hotel is located at a point on the main street where a lot of people hang out late into the night, hollering and making a lot of noise. Prayer calls are loud and very close by; expect to be woken up by them before sunrise. 

Tours: For 60,000 TZS, the hotel arranged for a driver to take me to Ngezi Forest, a lighthouse, and Vumawimbi Beach (admission costs not included), with a coffee break at Swahili Divers. The tour lasted about 6 hours. The driver didn't speak any English so the main English-speaking hotel staff went with us. This was somewhat helpful, but I didn't get an actual tour guide in this arrangement. Again, all this required a lot of patience to organize because the hotel staff always seemed hesitant/uncertain about what they could or could not arrange.

An ok option for Wete - requires some patience

Pemba Crown is in the "city center" of Wete. Hotel is clean but looks more for local people than for tourists. There are signs informing that only married people can sleep in the same room...
Service is in line with tanzanian standards, but far below the Zanzibar average. The personell is not really used to deal with tourist, but if you ask for the hotel owner he will be able to help you in arranging something on the island. The hotel has no restaurant, and this is the reason why after one night we moved to the Annex of "Sharook Guest House". 
Please consider that the only restaurant present in Wete is disgusting, so you better sleep in a place where you can also eat.
Being located in front of the "Minareto" and at the crossroad with the market and "bus" station the rooms are really noisy and it's difficult to sleep especially during the ramadan.
On the other hand, hotel rates are really cheap especially if you pay in tanzanian shillings.
