I stayed in a bungalow, i like here because of close to the beach, i can saw the sea view and can walked into the beach from my room, made me feel like private beach, not too much people on this beach, But 1 thing i'm not ok is the way in front of the resort is like a mud, not good because the way not smooth if it's raining but it's ok, i like atmosphere around the bungalow.

So so but close to the beach


( If you are insecure about they amount of days you should stay in Koh Mak I can tell you right now that there is not much to see except the fantastic view with a amazing sunset. Maybe some rubber plant extraction field. It’s really calm on this island. We did also not see much of sand flies which is a huge rumor about this island! I saw and got bit by 1 fly. 
Stay 2 max 3 days if you are not here for the long relaxing-and-absolutely-nothing-to-do-vacay. )

I looked at this hotel before we arrived to Koh Mak but I was a bit hesitant because of the price that some(!) websites displayed. Better to go to the hotel you’re looking at and check it out before you book! 

Sadly we went with another hotel which was not even what the images displayed, ended up checking out one day earlier and checked in at Sky beach. 🥳

They have kayaks and some snorkeling gear, super good price! 

The images are exactly what they display on the sites and it’s so clean. They keep the hotel area super clean, including the garden, the parking and the restaurant really clean, and even sand flie free! ( see image of the white marbles, I think )😅 
One thing made me feel safe is that they’ve set out a big square of fishing net where you can swim in the water, on their own beach area for the guests safety and that is to keep the jellyfishes out! Awesome food and awesome vibe! If you are not staying here then come over just relax and enjoy the view!

Ps. the owner has a mean humorous jargon so don’t be sensitive about it he is really caring and humble!! ♥️ Thanks for the stay! 

Last minute stay!

A fantastic little resort with amazing boss Mr Pong and super friendly staff. Rooms a clean and very comfortable with a great beachfront restaurant serving tasty food and refreshing cocktails. They also keep the beach nice and clean. A must stay if your in Koh Mak

A must if your on Koh Mak

Very quiet. Great location and beautiful island. Host is very friendly and speaks English very well. Bungalow has air con and fan. Very comfortable. Beautiful white sand and clear water. Cold beer and great food. 

Very very relaxing

We stayed here for 2 nights on lovely Koh Mak. I'm still a bit conflicted about this place, as there is so much to love, but some things were not up to scratch.
Firstly, the location is fabulous. Other parts of the beach seem to have a lot of rubbish, but the beach near the resort was clean. The bungalow was right in the sand, and the grounds and surrounds were beautiful. On arrival, the staff were all sitting around at a table near the reception desk. It felt like we were intruding and the welcome was very underwhelming. After they confirmed our booking, they immediately demanded cash. I had booked though a booking agent who had my card details, and I had assumed that we could pay by card. Now this is not the fault of Sky Beach, but it should have been made clear that we had to pay in cash only, and cards were not accepted.
The bungalow is large and spacious, but the decor and design were poor.. it just felt 'mean', without beside tables, or even a chair to sit on, just the bed and a table and a lot of empty floor. There was a place to hang clothes with heaps of hangers, and the bench for bags was huge. There's a good size fridge for your supplies. Though there's a TV, it wasn't plugged in and it looked like there was a DVD player or something. There was nothing on TV to watch anyway except shopping channels (not that TV is a major requirement). The view from the room was amazing, and there was a little beach and table on the porch to enjoy the vista. 
The bathroom was also large but needlessly. There was a shower curtain to help prevent water going everywhere, and the water pressure was OK. But there was no place for soap or shampoo except the floor. The sink area was small with tiny soaps and a mystery red liquid for the toiletries, and I wouldn't recommend opening the under sink cupboard... We were only given one thread bare towel per person, no other bathmat or hand-towels, and when we asked for a towel for the beach, it felt like we were putting the staff out - they actually seemed surprised we would need any extra towels and it took 20 minutes for them to find us another towel. 
That is pretty much what was the 'not quite right' aspect of the stay.. every time we went over to the restaurant area (for breakfast or food or anything), it felt like we were bothering them and putting them out by making them work. They hung out there all day on their phones etc and it felt like we were intruding anytime we went over. Even just asking for some information felt like we were interrupting their day, and they weren't very helpful with information either.
Unfortunately the other bad part about the place was the bed - it was horrendous! It felt like it was just a box base - like what goes under a mattress - and honestly felt like there were wood planks in it. It was uncomfortable and super hard. After a night of almost no sleep, I inquired whether any other rooms had a better bed.  All we got was a gruff reply saying 'all same all rooms'. We told them how bad the bed was and the response was uncaring and dismissive. We actually looked at moving to another hotel and once we told them we were checking out, they found some thin foam mattresses to put on top of the bed to help. I admit, it helped a little but not enough. It was excellent that they tried to help us and make our stay more comfortable - and we really appreciated that they tried their best. 
The food was delicious and we enjoyed breakfasts, a lunch and dinner all were good. Maybe not the largest variety, but plenty choice for most people.
This place could be so so good if the staff were friendlier and more helpful, and some little improvements to the room and bathroom supplies. It was OK, not the worst, but easily could have been so much better.

More like 3.5, but OK stay

On the beach, the most clean place you have seen, the rooms, the garden with all the flowers, the sand (all chairs are free), the restaurant.  Best kitchen on the island. And friendly with exellent service. Mr Pong is amazing.

Fantastic resort

For the sake of transparency alone, I will say right from the off that due to poor trip management on my part, not an admission I’ve ever previously felt compelled to make, I missed the last speedboat to Koh Mak from Trat, which incidentally sets off at 16:00. This necessitated a stopover in Trat so I arrived at the resort a day later than planned.

As I was only due to stay 4 nights in Koh Mak, this was both hugely frustrating as well as a mite expensive as I was forced to find immediate accommodation in Trat as well as pay for my now, unoccupied bungalow at the Sky Beach Resort.   

NOTE: A warning to all readers. Unless you're planning to fly from Bangkok to Trat, then it is near impossible to arrive in Trat to catch the Speedboat or Catamaran UNLESS you pre-book your bus/minivan tickets first. There are no trains. 

Although I landed on time (06:20), I discovered both scheduled 999 bus's from Ekamai to Laem Ngop Pier were full which left few options so beware, planning here is everything, especially in High season.

To the review proper then. 

Put simply folk’s, I just didn’t get on with the Sky Beach Resort at all, ergo the poor star rating I've given. 

Essentially, there are two main reasons.

1. The bungalow.

Although initially appearing generally clean, further investigation proved otherwise. 

A case in point, the blue bed linen contained a number of visible stains (pics attached), and whilst I’m no hygiene nut, it really wasn't acceptable. What was perhaps more of an issue though were the towels which all contained the most unpleasant smell that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Nasty. 

The cleaning of rooms occurs but twice during a guest’s stay, which for me meant just the once in three day’s. Hardly sufficient I would suggest (see details on door).  

All of the insect grill’s to the windows were secured using masking tape which became unstuck shortly after affixing thereby allowing sizeable gaps to appear and consequently, yours truly to be summarily devoured by the creatures of the day and night, repeatedly. 

The TV appeared to have just the one option, a Thai shopping channel. Now, before you scream at the screen that TV in Paradise is an oxymoron anyway, yes I agree. But, can I just say 'BBC World service?' I rest my case…

As a standalone bungalow, it was probably worth considerable less than as charged but its position right on the beach and wonderful view, especially first thing in the morning, may well substantiate the extra for many, however not for me. 
I’m also gonna throw this out there knowing the response from some of you may border on the incredulous, but...
 
Due to the very thinness of all the walls, I was hugely surprised at just how loud and intrusive that most romantic of film scapes was in real life i.e., the crashing of waves against the shore, usually signifying ‘You Know What!’ occurring.  

Whilst I've previously enjoyed a beach location, I've never before experienced such an ever present and never ending overture to the oceans own voice. Perhaps not so much a criticism as the location of the bungalow was part of the decision making process, simply an observation on the poor lack of sound insulation, that’s all. 

2. The Welcome and Warmth.

And now we get to the nub of the matter. 

Throughout the whole booking process, I struggled to get adequate responses to my emails requesting conformation on availability and price. This is clearly a smallish operation and in some respects, that is only to be expected, especially when given the obvious language barrier that exists but still, I would have hoped for and expected better.

I have to say though, my biggest gripe concerns the general warmth of the welcome and overall poor demeanour of the staff.  

To be clear, the service staff were always polite but strangely, never seemingly 'warm' in the way I had come to expect Thai staff to behave. This may sound like a small if mute point but having just left a cold and miserable Old London Town, I had reasonably expected just a little more warmth from the Land of Smiles and I’m not referring to the climate here folk's! 

The hospitality industry is one of the most challenging, as it requires more than just a ready smile to succeed. We all have favourite memories of trips taken and conversations enjoyed with both staff and fellow guests alike. Sadly, the best I can say here is that I was actually pleased to move on, such was the dour demeanour of all who attended my needs whilst there. 

That admission alone perhaps say’s everything about my brief stay at the Sky Beach Resort.  

As for Koh Mak, I may well return one day. The Island has retained a near innocence when compared to its much bigger brother, Koh Chang which incidentally, is where I now compose this review, similarly sat in a bungalow facing the wide open sea. Happily this time however, there are no such issues with toxic wave sound pollution.

It is what it is folk’s!

A view to die for but I for one, won’t be returning…

It was our first time in Koh Mak and while making the hotel booking we were quite skeptical but our main criteria was to stay in a beachfront bungalow and so we came across Sky Beach resort as per the reviews here on trip advisor. 

Honestly if you are looking for a peaceful time on the beach with clean bungalows and good food at the restaurant then this is the place for you. 

We were picked up by the resort shuttle from the pier which was free of cost and took us about 15 min. You can rent a motorbike from the resort itself for 250 baht per day. Koh mak island is so small you can actually cover all the places in one day. They do have kayaks and ferry reservation services available too for nearby islands and trat.

The bungalows are simple and clean. Nothing fancy but this beach was way better and cleaner than the other beaches of the island. The food of the restaurant is really good and inexpensive but you can always check out nearby restaurants. Chemist shop, supermarket and other restaurants are easily accessible from this resort. 

The staff and owner are really helpful and welcoming. I would highly recommend this place 

Peaceful & clean beachfront bunglows

We loved to stay here! The rooms are clean, spacious and the air conditioning are quiet and well functioning.

The food has great taste and a good Thai-kitchen. All of the people who work here are nice and welcoming!

Only thing to complain about is that Koh Mak in general has a LOT of sandflies who is making a day at the beach hard. The bites are ugly, big and very itchy. We tried different remedies but the local "red powder" seemed to dry them a little out...

Thailand in general has a lot of trash in the water, and that is no exception here either. The staff cleans the beach every day, which makes it better. But not every resort on the strip does it, so there's a lot of trash on the sides of the resort. Not a pretty sight unfortunately.

But nevertheless; a very nice and good place to stay!


Cozy, quiet and friendly

Second time in Skybeach, koh mak. Mr. Pong and his family are fantastic, and the staff are great, especially Lert, hes the best! 
Beautiful beach, great rooms, very clean, cosy atmosphere, restaurant is great! 
Will be returning again.
