7 or 8 km south of Maehongson there is a coffee shop on the side of the road just before you reach Hua Nam Mae Sakut called Coffee Station...the coffee is good and there are a steady stream of locals that stop by for a drink before work and throughout the day. It is owned and managed by the same family that own and manage the five cottage Anawain Resort on the hill behind their house and the coffee shop. Though they have been in business quite a few years now and have an active facebook presence this is the first review on tripadvisor thus the 'secret' title - clearly it has been kept a secret! This past week the internet was out at my house and I needed somewhere with internet for three days and so I stopped and asked about availability and was pleasantly surprised at the price and the room itself. It's not brand new but it has been maintained over the years since it has been open and was clean and ready for guests. (Many times in Thailand and around the world, you can measure the quality of a property if you arrive unannounced and the room is ready to go.) There are a few rough spots on the path to the rooms but nothing to complain about and definitely no disability access. The room has a fridge, kettle, bottled water, dishes and utensils - no in room coffee and tea but really good coffee is just a stroll down the path - and no breakfast. The rooms also have large bathtubs and in my case a rock wall strewn with artificial flowers! The hot water wasn't working for me but each cottage does have a hot water heater. And there's even an outdoor sink if you want to wash dishes outside! The price was low and the wifi was fast and the view from the two large windows out over the property were beautiful and peaceful. It felt like a private jungle retreat but still not that far off the main road - but I heard nothing but birds. You can fly by this place if you are not paying attention, but look for Coffee Station and you'll be in the right place. I am definitely returning when I need a quick peaceful relaxing stay.
